As an avid reader, I would advise you to read some fiction. Like when you read some fiction, you live from the character's perspective. The mistakes he makes and the lessons he learns always sticks with me and have a deeper effect on me than other book. Obviously, this is my opinion and not a fact or anything.

I kind of blame the school system for running my love of reading because before, I had book reports, I read anything, I could get my hands on but when, I felt forced to read for marks it became a "chore." I think, children should be encouraged to read but no book reports until grade 5 or 6 at least not grade 3 because than they associate reading with work!

I honestly didn't really have a problem until high school. I never minded doing book reports because I liked talking about books and writing was fairly easy for me. When I got to high school, though, there was good insane amount of pressure to pull out these themes that barely even existed and didn't even feel important (like womb envy in Frankenstein) and that just kind of ruined reading because I felt like I was doing it wrong but also hated the "correct" way

    • @JaceKeller
      @JaceKeller 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Same. I used to go to the school library and pick books and read them in 2 weeks (the maximum time you were allowed to keep them). I used to read like 10-20 books a year. And then in High School book reports became a thing and I've spent YEARS without reading a single book. It's only recently at my 27th birthday that I picked the habit back up again.

      @WooHooCelery 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I was the exact same. I didn’t particularly like the books we had to read throughout primary school, but I didn’t mind reading and writing about them as I genuinely enjoyed both of those things. Once I got to high school, however, my attitude towards reading completely changed. It wasn’t the mandatory reading of certain books that was the problem, it was the work we had to do after reading each chapter. Deciphering metaphors and themes is all fine and dandy, but they were never open to interpretation. You had to have exactly what the marking scheme said otherwise your answers were wrong. While some books are very clear in their message, there are plenty of books that mean something different to each individual reader. Not being allowed to have a different opinion from the marking scheme really took the fun out of something I really loved.

Hi, Matt. I want to recommend "The Book You Wish Your Parents Had Read and Your Children Will Be Glad That You Did" by Philippa Perry. The title as you can see is self-explanatory. :) On a surface, it's obvious that it is a book about parenting, but after reading it thoroughly, I can say it's more about understanding and accepting your inner child before/while deciding to be a parent to a child. It's a great book whether or not you plan to have a child in the future, as it talks abundantly on self acceptance.

I wanted to realy thank you for your video 1 year ago about reading. It was one of the main motivations for me to get more into the habit of reading and now, 1 year later, i have finished 20 books. While I also initialy aimed for 24 books, its still insane for me looking back and realising how much i read and how well I was able to maintain that habit. It is definitly hard sometimes and it realy can feel like a chore (especialy non fiction) but the rewards, insights and joys you get out of reading are definitly worth it. 10/10 can recommend
    Sooo... thank you.

I'm thinking of writing a novella about minimalism, or rather about the opposite. I've spent years outlining and drafting a massive Star Wars fan-fiction series but I think it's time for me to stop shooting so high right out of the gate and just write something short. I don't think I'll try to get it published but I'll put it up on my website at least and maybe print a few copies for family/friends.
I'll still work on the series but if starting on TH-cam has taught me anything it's to start slow and be willing to post crappy stuff -- to learn by doing and creating.

I can never get myself to sit and read- I'm too slow and nothing sticks in my head!! But thanks to Audible, I'm able to listen to 1-2 books a month. I write notes while I listen and this whole principle works well for me because I can use my time commuting to listen to audiobooks. I feel so much more productive because reading was one of the last things I never managed to squeeze into my day. I hope I won't get attacked for not actually picking up a physical book, but my ADHD just doesn't let me read. Besides, as a musician, the best way to get through to me is through sound! I love business and productivity books. Even though I am a creative, I just don't find any merit or joy in reading fiction.

I’m the same way. I LOVE books! Worked at Barnes & Noble for years, always dreamed of having my own library in my home, and have actually gained a large quantity of my most loved books alongside future reads. My struggle is that I either get distracted too easily or when I do get uninterrupted time, I start falling asleep a few chapters later so it takes me forever to finish a single book. Audible has been a Godsend to me too. Most of the books I’ve listened to I also own the physical copy. Some books, I listen too and then go back and read over some parts that I want to reinforce. This is especially true for books that I’ve read for my own personal growth journey. I believe that as long as you’re getting the message of the book and you enjoy it, listening or reading, it’s all the same. And I don’t tell people that I listened to 12 books last year, I still always say I read 12 books. 😉

Favorite thing to do is read, so glad to have some new recommendations! Mine for you is a fiction novel, the Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. I read it recently on holiday and thought it was absolutely amazing. That's the most recent...
Other faves are Giovannis Room (imo the most beautiful book ever written) by James Baldwin and either Neverwhere or American Gods by Neil Gaiman, but tbh you cant go wrong with any of his books ☺
Great video! I'm so passionate about books and reading, I'm so pleased when others enjoy it too ❤

I’m late to the party but I recommend lost connections and stolen focus by Johann Hari. As a teacher and educator this made so much sense of the world for me personally and when it comes to understanding my students. There are wholesome moments and opportunity for pauses in his writing that reads like a novel and I’ve had (sorry for being personal) the most liberating cries of my life in these pauses

I loved the inspiration it gave me to keep reading more books this year. I'm also on the same boat as you as I didn't read a lot of books until college. The books I have right now are: No One Ever Told Us That (John D. Spooner), The Psychology of Money (Morgan Housel), Hot Right Now (Awwwards), and Skin in the Game (Nassim Nicholas Taleb). I still have to start 2 of them, but this video has inspired me to make plans to read them all.

Thank you for this video. I have been falling out of love with reading, but this has brought me renewed motivation. My audiobook recommendations are Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert, Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes and When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi (funny how my favourite books are actually audiobooks! I love it especially when they are read by the actual author and that adds a lot of character) :)

Matt, great video as always! Last year, I read 50+ books and the first two I'm recommending are a few of those that I can't get out of my heart.
    My recommendations:
    - "If cats disappear from the world" by Genki Kawamura (fiction)
    - "Before the coffee gets cold" by Toshikazu Kawaguchi (fiction)
    - "The Agile Mind" by Estanislao Bachrach
Lots of love from Buenos Aires! ♥

I might be picking up a couple of these books this year. If you are a fan of music, there’s a series called 33 1/3 that goes in depth on a specific album for each book.
The one I’ll recommend is the 33 1/3 on “Donuts” by J Dilla. The book breaks down the processes that went into the making of one of the best instrumental hip hop albums of all time and how the artist’s passing impacted the album’s meaning. Super good book and a quick read (only 130ish pages).

Nice recommendations! I'm adding a couple of those to my "Want to Read" list. It's good to have small goals in reading. I tend to have two separate goals. Read at least 1 page a day, I end up reading at least 3. Read 26 books this year.
I can recommend reading: Doughnut Economics: Seven Ways to Think Like a 21st-Century Economist
Rethinking about how the economics work and how they not necessarily help our environment.

Along the lines of reading goals, last year I tried to read 50 books but in aiming for that I found myself picking shorter books rather than gravitating towards ones I was interested in. Other books I enjoyed were:
    - Man's Search for Meaning - Viktor Frankl
    - The Happiest Refugee - Anh Do
    - Can't Hut Me - David Goggins ( I prefered the audiobook)
    - Falling Leaves - Adeline Yen Mah

Books that stuck with me for a long time after finishing them were "Open" by Andre Agassi and "I am Malala: The Girl who stood up for Education and was shot by the Taliban" by Malala Yousafzai (also on Spotify btw). I usually don't read autobiographies and rather enjoy fiction (strong recommendation in that department: "The peacock" by Isabel Bogdan) - if I get myself to read at all after university kind of "took that joy away from me" - but these two books really touched me.

I would love to recommend "Turtles All the Way Down" by John Green. The story follows a teen who deals with anxiety, and it was very comforting to follow the journey. If you'e looking for more of a practical, or applicable, reads "Joy from Fear" is a great guide for mindful ways to tackle your fears, and "Bad Ass Habits" by Jen Sincero was a helpful guide for sticking to habits. Enjoy!

My Top 3 Books of All Time:
    1. Think and Grow Rich - N. Hill
    2. Mastery - R. Greene
    3. How to Win Friends & Influence People - D. Carnegie
After reading these 3 books, I never read any other self-help books anymore. Mastery is for finding that skill you'll be good at and Think and Grow Rich is how to apply that skill. While How to Win Friends & Influence People is how to deal with people, because in the end we still need to know how to deal with others. Hope this help! Thanks for the great video!
