Windrowing Chicken Litter

- We have our usual between the flocks routine. Every now and then we add a few extra steps. Windrowing is something we do periodically to try and kill any unwanted pathogens in the litter. We do this by piling the litter in 2 windrows the length of the house. This causes the litter to go through a heat cycle which kills those pathogens.
We use our John Deere 4066R to pull our Lewis Brothers Windrower.
I was looking for a windrower that has hydraulic Wheels on the back where did y'all find a windrower like that?
We bought one from a local guy that was getting rid of it and then our other one we bought through an auction site
We run a creekview pulverizer over our floors before we windrow. It keeps from having to run the decaker. It saves time and saves space in the litter shed. Have you guys tried that instead?
I actually tried that last flock and was very pleased with how it turned out. My litter had gotten thin so I decided to just grind it, roll it and level it back out. Definitely saved a lot of time and space. Thanks for reaching out and for watching
Do you think a 4052m heavy duty will pull that windrower
I doubt it. We have the 4066M and it's on the small side. Ideally i'd like to have a little bit bigger tractor to pull it.
@@FarmerHunt good to know I may put a tuner on it and push it to 70 horsepower it's supposed to be the same as the 4066 just different horsepower
I noticed that you do not put down peanut hulls. I also noticed that sun south sticker on the tractor
We put down pine shavings but not every flock. Not a lot of peanut hulls to get in my area. Do you like the peanut hulls?
We got that tractor a few years ago from Sunsouth in a Carrollton, Ga. Been a good one so far!
How much is Chicken Litter going for a ton where you're at?
Right now it’s going for about $11-12/ton and that’s not spread.
@@FarmerHunt not bad, 10 to 15 here in WVa.
@@wvmann9320 You grow for Pilgrims?
@Boomer God no. I don't think I'd ever get in the chicken business. Unless I'm doing small scale hippy drippy shit for the DC yuppie transplant and tourist.
@@wvmann9320 I Grew for Tyson for 15 years. But am kinda glad I sold my farm while the price was high!
Do you have a controller on the tractor to stop and start the drum paddles? Or is it just by PTO?
There is a control box that we have but it quit working. We have a line that runs from our battery into the control box and it plugs into the windrower. At one time, we were able to turn it on and off at that box. Now its just done by the PTO
I have the same windrower...would like to see you run the cruster also.
clgraham82 I have another video called Between The Flocks from a couple months back that shows a little of the cruster running. At that time I was using a Lewis Brothers DB1. We recently upgraded to a DB2. I have finished crusting for this flock but I’ll be making a new cruster video in the coming months. Thanks for watching! Do you use your windrower often?
Farmer Hunt no I usually have too much cake so I just cake out and then 1 full Cleanout each year.
clgraham82 this time I crusted under my waterlines first to remove some of the cake and then rolled it. It made it much easier to roll and it is supposed to heat up better with the crusting removed. There are less air gaps in the windrows.
@@FarmerHunt I would windrow if I had help and knew for sure how much out time I had. Like you said, the windrows need 3-4 days between turning to make sure you get the best results. For me, its just easier to cake out four houses in two days and have the floors ready to go.
clgraham82 I can certainly understand that!
👏👏👏
How much do you make per flock ?
It's tournament pay so it varies every flock based on your performance. Our contracted pay is .069 cents/lb
I am trying to get a start in the business.I currently live in n.y but I have friends that are in the business in Delaware . What are the main companies who I could do business with
@@rajawaleed7804 In our area it’s either Pilgrims or Koch. There are other large integrators, but they aren’t in our area.
