I don't know.. it's odd how "the master" seems like a.mindless beast. Doesn't speak or show any intelligence.. yet his minions do. It's almost silly

    • @sicariusflamus3033
      @sicariusflamus3033 ปีที่แล้ว +13

@@joshythehand2960its not how it worked in the book:
barlow could speak, he was a Type One vampire, one of maybe a dozen in the entire world. He was intelligent and cunning, capable of planning anf executing elaborate schemes. He can also make Type Two vampires, which are similar to Type Ones but missing the level of intelligence.
Basically, the movie's portrayal of Barlow rendered him mute and also looking like Nosferatu (in the book, he was much like Dracula, could shapeshift/change his appearance seemingly at will). Everything that Straker said to Callahan in this scene is almost verbatim what Barlow said in the book (Straker was not even present for this confrontation in the book, may have already been dead)

Nalder also only had a combined 70 seconds of screen time in the entire miniseries, something he was a little upset about given how many hours he had to spend in the makeup chair and wearing that uncomfortable Barlow makeup that kept having to be fixed, according to an interview he gave to Fangoria Magazine. I didn't see anything hilarious in this at all.
When true evil arrives..... it boldly announces itself. Even before it fully arrives, you'll see its mark. It always has a mark of ego present. Some symbol, it's name misspelled somehow, something old and forgotten but relevant. When it talks, if you listen closely..... you'll hear it. It can't help but reveal the deep darkness inside and its true intentions.

The book is absolutely fantastic. I thought I had read all Stephen King's early stuff but I missed this one.
its too bad that King now just writes these big chunky books for the summer holiday market, for ppl to doze over on the beach. Because the guy can really really write. Salem's Lot is like a dark Cannery Row. I read it and read it again right away...real vampires, not these nice Twilight vegetarians or insanely sexy True Blood (tho of course I like True Blood, but its not proper vampires) These are hideous creatures that live in the dark..I love the way King doesnt have them in polished coffins, but hidden about the town in abandoned freezers and car boots and behind old shelves and in cellars and under rotten old shacks...like vermin....infected vermin...fingernails black with earth scratching across the window...and a stinking rotten smell wherever they are hiding..a stench of charnel pits when they open their mouths...the scene where Marjorie Glick comes to 'life' is just the most terrifying thing I ever read.
"A hand fell out from beneath the sheet and the fingers began to dance jaggedly on the air, twisting and turning...she was on Jimmy in a hunched scrabbling run and Ben saw the sideways predatory lunge of her head as she battened on him..Jimmy Cody screamed the scream of the utterly damned..." I read this whole scene paralysed and I didnt realise my old cat, who is now thin and light, had leapt on the bed and come silently right up to my face, waiting for attention. I tore my eyes away from the book and turned my head and the cats huge eyes were Right. Next. To. Mine. and she miaowed at the same moment so the sharp teeth were flashed by the lamplight.. I must have a strong heart because I felt it simply stop. and restart with a jerk.

I remember when this was shown in the UK in the Autumn of 1978, back in the days of coal fires☺. My mum asked me to get some coal to put on the fire while this was on. The coal bunker was round the back of the house then. Well you can imagine , I was 15 , and I s..t myself, because it was dark and windy and I didn't want to bump into anything scary scary, and when she asked me to fetch another shovelful I bottled it😄. I think it still is a brilliant mini series with the late James Mason in it. Fab!!

glyn miller You’re story had me in fits of laughter because it was a carbon copy of my situation when even made for TV horror films were becoming quite sophisticated and proper scary. We had a new central heated coal fire and a bunker outside the house and I hated when my dad demanded a fresh bucket of coal in the late dark evenings of autumn 1978/ winter 79, and Salems Lot was not a film to sleep well on never mind wrestle with an imagination that needed only a dark room or coal bunker shed to be overactive on such deeply scary supernatural themes of the day.

I can so relate to that, I was a little younger....and I shouldn't have been watching buy baby sitter let me....my entire family were talking about this when it was shown! It's powerful...still looks good today....what many people don't understand is its the acting that makes it so special not special effects. Or CGI. Acting is timeless.

Nalder and Mason were much better villains than Rutger Hauer and Donald Sutherland in the remake. Nalder said he was interested in doing a sequel but nothing ever became of it. He was not involved in Return to Salem's Lot.

I saw this movie in 1978! It was the scariest thing that I ever saw! I watched it with my mother and sisters! Ironically, my father hated such movies and would never watch them! (I believe he had been frightened by a movie like this, in his youth!) Anyways... this movie had us all scared for months afterward. Today's movies aren't even close to the terror that we felt as children! Thanks for the memory!

when he says "Ciao" to the

      it's an Italian word.

      Striker/Mason: "I'm not. The

To me this was a beautiful modern representation of Max Schreck's Count Orlock in Nosferatu. The gaunt actor and the make-up are perfect and something that was missing from the original Nosferatu was the voice Barlow made.
This gnawing snarl as his form of communication just blew my mind as a kid and suits the character perfectly. Mad props to the sound department who came up with Barlow's unique voice.
