The newsprint on the walls may be referencing an old practice of poor or improvised housing using newspaper to cover the walls, rather than having bare boards. You can see it sometimes in older movies.

This one feels it could've been a later Jones effort in the 1970s-1990s, where a character is brought back but the story is weak and the script needed a heavy cut. Reminds me of 1996's Superior Duck in that respect.
There's also a bizarre scaling error where Daffy (just after being thrown through the table in the arm wrestle) is suddenly barely half the size of the table. He walks off camera, then returns, back at his normal size, for the one-liner 'I think you're pretty tough, don't I?'. I can't unsee it now.

Yikes, it's that bad? Comparing it to "Superior Duck" like that? I thought it was just a first draft version of Drip-Along Daffy.

20:33 it's not only Milt Franklyn, many post-shutdown Stalling scores are also less reliant on cues, particularly in cartoons released in late 1955 or later

You could more charitably note the wrestling gag (which made me uncomfortable in Bunny Hugged) as something improved upon in Deduce, You Say (You may be big, but I'm small!), followed by the "brown as a nut" boxing stance.

I grew up watching this on TV rotation, it is OK but not among the most memorable cartoons. There is something that nobody mentioned: a lot of the footage in here was later reused in the opening of “The Merrie Melodies” show in the sixties, which mostly featured cartoons by Speedy Gonzales with either Sylvester or Daffy.

"I'm Super Guy!" is the one line I actually remember from this one. I don't want to be too hard on this cartoon, but it's pretty forgettable and middle of the road for Jones in what was otherwise his prime era!

I do find it funny they actually shaded Canasta's muscles, since in, (especially the 1950's), they don't really shade the characters, they're usually just flat colors.

Oddly enough, this one is a very early memory from my childhood. I first saw it on Nickelodeon then would frequently see it on ABC's The Bugs Bunny and Tweety Show (heavily edited of course due to the "Freesco Keed" alias, the cigarette rolling and Daffy accidentally shooting himself in the head while spinning his gun) Weirdly enough, I also saw this one before seeing the far superior Drip-Along Daffy. Anyway, this is clearly the weakest of Jones' Porky/Daffy shorts. The rest of those shorts are great, but this one stands out like a direct to video/DVD animated Disney sequel to it's far better original theatrical release. It's not terrible (I too would rather watch this than a Buddy short or a Sniffles short for that matter), just a short that relies too much on dialogue and overly long scenes such as Daffy trying to move Canasta while deciding what to do with the reward money. I did get a chuckle out of Daffy's horse stifling a cough while he's monologuing and some of Daffy's random blurts such as "See my mask? It's a very nice mask. Quite stylish, don't you think?" and "Trick or treat?" are kind of funny as well. Porky is utterly wasted in this one though (not literally, although a drunk Porky would have been hilarious). There's one glaring error in this short that really bothers me too. Near the end of the short, Porky is sitting on the porch steps and during all the thumping from inside the house, his shirt randomly turns pink. I even noticed this as a kid and thought it was weird. How the heck does that even happen?

The ABC version also cut the POV shot of Daffy getting punched in the face (but only after 1994. Prior to that year, they left it in, despite cutting everything else. Also, they cut Canasta sticking his gun in Daffy's mouth).

Cartoon Network surprisingly kept the part where Daffy shoots himself in the head after swinging his gun around. I’m fairly certain Nickelodeon cut that part but kept everything else in but I could be wrong as it was a very early memory of mine. However, I don’t remember having seen Daffy shoots himself in the face until Cartoon Network started airing that short. Amusingly enough, I first thought Daffy was actually so frustrated with the situation at hand that he was actually resorting to a failed suicide. That would have actually made this short funnier IMO.

You perfectly summed up most of what I would say about this short, even in later appearances Porky was not as underused as he is here.

I don't really remember Nickelodeon cutting anything, but that does sound like something they'd do, though, without evidence that proves or disproves it, I can't report on it. And yes, it is puzzling that Cartoon Network didn't cut that, but cut a similar scene in "Daffy's Inn Trouble," though it was shown uncut and has been since 2015 (it was earlier than that, but they had to cut it in 2012 out of sensitivity to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting). @glowworm2

Pretty good jones daffy and porky short, anytime the gags make daffy face off someone who is stronger than him is funny also did like the ending of the short as well, the animation and music are top notch as usual, 8/10.

This is one of those shorts where, it seems like a fine cartoon when you’re a kid, but, as an adult, you do see why not that many people like it…at least compared to its predecessor (“Drip-Along Daffy”), which had more action, better use of physical comedy over verbal comedy, and gave Daffy a more-or-less happy ending (Porky defeats Canasta and makes Daffy sanitation commissioner so he can “...finally clean up this one-horse town” vs. Porky stands by while Daffy gets his feathered butt handed to him, but, hey Daffy fixed Canasta’s little red wagon…literally. “The wheels were busted, the axle was all bent, and it needed a new coat of paint.”). It’s definitely mid as far as Daffy/Porky genre spoofs go, but I would rather watch this than “China Jones” (which had the Dragon Lady scene and the “I’m being held prisoner in a Chinese laundry” ending that Nickelodeon cut going for it). With this revelation that “My Little Duckaroo” isn’t as good as “Drip-Along Daffy,” how are people here going to feel about “Rocket Squad” or “Robin Hood Daffy”? I'm not worried about "Deduce You Say?" (The Victorian mystery/Sherlock Holmes spoof) because that one was actually good.
The Censorship Report for today…has more-or-less been covered by glowworm1, but I’m going to reiterate, because she missed some parts. All of these cuts were by ABC, by the way, because…of course, ABC would cut this. Maybe the FOX or syndicated version of “Merrie Melodies Starring Bugs Bunny and Friends” (not to be confused with the 1960s one that mostly aired Speedy Gonzales cartoons [both Sylvester vs. Speedy and Daffy vs. Speedy], the last three Pepe Le Pew shorts between 1960 and 1962, and some post-1964 one-hit blunders and Cool Cat shorts. It was “Looney Tunes on Nickelodeon” sans the 1980s whimsy and “kids rule, adults drool” irreverence) would have cut this, but there’s so far, no evidence.
Scenes edited on ABC: Nasty Canasta putting rolling papers, tobacco, and a lit match in his mouth and rolling a cigarette (which is more impressive than the old “cherry stem knot” trick or Selma tying a cigarette with her mouth on that one Simpsons episode where Selma tries to have a baby so she doesn’t die alone like Great-Aunt Gladys) was cut; Daffy as “The Freesco Keed” (which strangely has Mel Blanc slipping into the Mexican voice he would use for Speedy Gonzales when Friz Freleng co-opted the character from Robert McKimson) was cut; Nasty Canasta shoving a gun in Daffy's mouth during their poker game faded out after Daffy says, "Nice cut" after Nasty Canasta slices the side of Daffy’s hand (which I’m surprised wasn’t edited), Daffy accidentally shooting himself in the head after twirling his pistol had the actual scene of the gun shooting Daffy replaced with a still shot of Porky standing by the door (and I’m so sure “Merrie Melodies Starring Bugs Bunny and Friends” - both the FOX version and the syndicated version - would have done the same), and Daffy's POV shot of Nasty Canasta drawing back his fist and punching Daffy in the face was sloppily and obviously cut, going from Canasta drawing back his fist to Porky whittling outside as the house shakes from the beatings (fun fact about that cut: ABC actually left that part alone until 1994, so from when “The Bugs Bunny and Tweety Show” premiered in 1985 to around 1993, kids could see Daffy get socked in the face, despite everything else being cut. That’s American censorship for ya…
I’m continuing with The Tooney Ten and my “The one where…” gimmick, so the next ten cartoons after this are:
      1) Sheep Ahoy: The one where Ralph Wolf and Sam Sheepdog continue their workplace predator and prey relationship.
      2) Baby Buggy Bunny: The one where Bugs adopts a baby that turns out to be a bank robber searching for his loot.
      3) Pizzicato Pussycat: The one where a cat becomes an accidental celebrity thanks to a musically-talented mouse.
      4) Feather Dusted: The one where Foghorn Leghorn once again tries to pry Egghead Jr. away from his book learnin’ in order to have a more adventurous boyhood.
      5) Pests for Guests: The one where Elmer’s new dresser drawer is home to The Goofy Gophers
      6) Beanstalk Bunny: The one where Daffy becomes a greedy jerk in this adaptation of “Jack and the Beanstalk” that also stars Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd.
      7) All Fowled Up: The one where Foghorn Leghorn realizes that trolling Barnyard Dawg and Henery Hawk isn’t legitimate exercise.
      8) Stork Naked: The one where Daffy takes on The Drunken Stork when the latter delivers an egg to the former’s house.
      9) Lighthouse Mouse: The one where Hippety Hopper causes chaos for Sylvester in a lighthouse.
      10) Sahara Hare: The one where Bugs Bunny ends up in the Sahara desert, Yosemite Sam is a very white-looking Arab (which, depending on what region you are in The Middle East, is true. Don’t know about the red hair, though, but if Yosemite Sam can be an American Indian in “Horse Hare,” then he can be Arabian here. Accuracy in how ethnic groups are portrayed wasn’t taken seriously back then), and, much like Chuck Jones and bull-fighting in “Bully for Bugs,” Friz Freleng proves to Eddie Selzer that camels can be funny.

Yosemite Sam was not actually an Indian in Horse Hare. He was a renegade, meaning he was a traitor siding with the Indians.

i dont hate this short but does anyone else think daffy is too likeable in this short? actually kinda bums me out that he didn't win. and for the record im fine with bad things happening to main characters in cartoons (i love courage after all)
