  • We got our hands on an antique Sears 9236 snow blower. We know very little about it other than that it is old, single stage, single speed, and someone has replaced the factory carburetor with an incorrect Chinese knockoff.

I believe the sideways mounting of the engine is on purpose. It appears to be a single stage that is actually propelled by the wheels. If you look at the modern-day Toro snowmaster series of single stage snow blowers you'll notice that the engine is sideways.

I have a 1974 Eska 945c snow blower that was made in Dubuque, Iowa. Zero safety features. Auger spins when engine is running. Has forward and reverse. All chain drive. Single stage. 5 hp Tecumseh. Wasn't run for 35 years, Put gas in it and it started. Had a 8 inch snow with drifts and the beast tore right through it. A keeper.

As noted below, 9236 would be the 236th day of 1979 production which was Friday, August 24th, 1979, so it would have likely been found in the 1979-1980 catalog. These were made by Western Tool/AMF (who at the time owned Harley-Davidson) which is signified by a "536" model prefix. AMF eventually sold this division to Murray and then Briggs and Stratton owns it today and provides the remaining parts and service support for them. 536 model prefix blowers (and other equipment) were made for Sears through the 2000s. Now Craftsman equipment (even that sold at Sears) is mostly supplied by MTD who is owned by Stanley Black and Decker who bought the Craftsman brand a few years ago. MTD product sold at Sears will have a "247" model prefix.
I've fixed plenty of these over the years and gotten most of them for free. They are good solid machines if they are well taken care of. Nothing beats a Tecumseh Snow King. They don't call it a "King" for nothing. Main thing is clean fuel, clean and full oil level. They will last forever if taken care of.

Last forever versus the new junk. You're right on. These old blowers, single stage don't have the garbage gear failures, just bearings and belts in the end, engine side usually the carb on the Tecumseh

I just picked one of these up out of the trash. It needed a chain, and once I replaced that I realized the chain was really floppy and scaring the shit outta me. I did some research and found out it is supposed to have an idler sprocket for the chain that attaches the the side of the auger housing. It pushes down on the chain so it stays tensioned. The part # is 50192. They’ve discontinued it but apparently any #35 idler sprocket will do as long as it is the right width to line up with the chain and has a bearing in the center. Check and see if yours has it because that might be why its so scary when it starts turning.

The model number is 536.918000. The 9236 is a code of some sort... I know it is NOT 1992, because I have the same model, coded 9225, and I'm pretty sure I was using it in the 1980s in highschool... Two more things, it came with a plastic cover for the drive belts, I still use mine in the Chicago weather.

The date code is the 236th (236th) day of 1979, which was Friday, August 24th. Yours is the 225th day of 1979 which is Monday, August 13th. The "536" in the model number denotes that AMF/Western Tool (which eventually was bought by Murray and then Briggs and Stratton) made it for Sears.

Looks like a 3.5hp to me. The Tecumseh service manual has the Sears to Tecumseh cross reference chart, its in the back of the book, you can download it off the web. As far as points. First digit of the seriel is the year. Anything under a 2 will have points. Its pretty easy to tell between a Tecumseh built in the 90's and one from the 80's, so if you get one of those older ones, look at that serial, anything before 1982 will have the points, without having to pull to check.

1979 production for 1980 sales year. The 9236 is the 236th day of 1979, which was August 24, 1979.

1979 production (236th day, which was 8/24/79) for the 1980 sales year. That's what the 9236 means.
