But careful with your mic audio and voice cadence could be better (clearer voice and maybe more volume?).

I know the community memes a lot about him, but I feel like this only shows what an institution DauT is in AoE2 (sadly, sometimes newer players really don't grasp what a legend he truely is and take jokes way to seriously, but let's not focus on that).
DauT has been playing for over 20 years now, heavily dominating the first decade of the 2000s but still getting first places on a regular basis after that, being a relevant top 10ish player nowadays, absolutely capable of taking matches, sets and tournaments off every other pro. Dude is close to 40 y.o. with a family and an unique lifestyle , still dominating both young whipper-snappers and seasoned veterans in a highly competetive, fast RTS, always changing environment with the jump to DE and concurrent balancing/ additions to the game. Most "older" players in Esports would've quit or fallen off their performance in those circumstances, but DauT remains the "Eternal Legend". I do agree with the 2020 "top players of all time" voting, placing him at #2.
It is "rather easy" to be a pro for a year or two, having a good run with certain metas against certain other pros, but being one of the few handfull relevant players in a game for over 20 years, that is an achievement that cannot be understated. Depending on one's factors that go into how they rate "greatest of all times", I feel like DauT cannot be lower than two, and only loses out to Viper because he had higher highs for also a prolonged time - if you consider DauT's influence on the scene over the entire span of him playing, one could argue that he deserves the title aswell. Again, just to emphasize this, being (close to) 40 in any sports, traditional or Esports and still outperfoming potentially everyone, is so mindblowing. Doing it for over 20 years is just crazy. DauT IS the lord.

    Hey @Hera
first of all, I want to say congrats on your achievements and not only your dominance as a player these days but also your personal growth. I feel like you have become more mature over the years and a more wholesome person as well! I have been playing AoE II since like end of 2020 and I've been following both you and Viper the most since then, so I am kind of between both fanbases :D (yes you can roast me for that :D) but the point I am trying to make is that I feel it is great for the game and the community to have the level of competition we have today and your current winning streak is even more impressive due to that, no matter the GOAT status, which is always going to stay very personal (like in any other professional sports, anyways)
Secondly, regarding the mentality statements of TheViper and you in the beginning (like min. ~ 5), I feel for a competitor, to rise to the top, it is almost non-negotiable to have the mindset of always winning and if not, it's a failure. So I guess if you really aim to be at the top of your competition, it is required. BUT at the same time, it has a flipside! Since as you said, there can only be one tournament winner everytime, I disagree to say it is a failure for everyone else. I feel for most people, this mindset could cause far more frustration and have negative aspects in terms of mental health! In my opinion, it is important to find the right balance between competitiveness / striving for the best you can do in every tournament or also every aspect of your life and on the other hand taking a step back to have a look at the bigger picture and realize if losing is really a failure or if it is maybe not so bad. Just some thoughts. :)
So anyways, keep up what you're doing, go your way and only love for everyone!

@Hera - awesome closing comment about recency bias. Viper was (is?) so dominant over such a long time, and if you are the Greatest of >ALL TIME< then someone has to be dominant over a long period of time as well. You guys are professional sports players, and like any Pro player (think American professional sports) some of the "greatest" are historical or long passed away. It's not just winning, but maybe new strategy or new way or playing or being inventive, creative, etc. Also, great comment about Daut, who has been playing for so long. Not the greatest, but amazing performances and still making it happen. He's the grand wizard, oracle, big pappa of professional players and still competitive. Great reaction video! Keep up all the awesome playing. Love watching you and love the honesty.

I really appreciate how both Her and Viper recognize great players of the past.
The GOAT is an impossible title to claim. It is not as simple as who would win a match in their prime.
I agree that the level of play goes up over time as competition increases. Hera said about himself that he quit for a while because he had no good players to compete against.
When he came back, he worked really hard, and joined a pro team. If not for the oportunity to compete and train with other great players, Hera would not be as good as he is. I Imagine that if Hera was born a decade earlier, he would not be quite as good as he is.
Dominating competition is the mark of a great player.
Single-handedly elevating the level of play is the mark of a legend.

The healthy competition and mutual respect in this community is so precious. When you see The Viper's video he acknowledges that Hera is currently the best player. At the same time Hera acknowledges that TheViper is still the goat. This is such a healthy way of communicating and improving: instead of tilting and grinding because you are angry, you grind because you are impressed by the other players and want to learn from them and improve. (Also money and fame, of course, let's be real.) Very happy with people like Hera and TheViper at the top. Always classy and respectful, with the right amount of amicable banter!

I think this is good for the game. It happend to football, right? We've seen Pelé make a revolution and thought that we wouldn't see that ever again. Then Maradona came and the discussions started on who was better and, again, believed that besides them, there were no other players that would compare... and Messi proved everyone wrong.
Does that mean that Pelé and Maradona were not as good? No! It's probably impossible to really compare because each of the three played at different eras; game changed, teams evolved, players adapted.
I'm excited because I believe that Viper might be AoE's Pelé, Hera AoE's Maradona... with the added sauce that they are both competing during the same era, we get to enjoy both of them playing.
This also means that, probably, our AoE's Messi is still to come.
One more thought: first football World Cup was in 1930, 93 years ago. I don't know how it felt like, but did people back then believed that the sport would not only avoid being forgotten but, instead, continue growing to become the monster is today?
First S-tier tournament for AoE2 happend in 2000. We're 23 years in, and the game and community, more than 25 years after its original release, it's at its peak. So... people of the future: I hope you enjoy this monstrous sport born in 1999. I don't know what kind of players you're watching right now and I have no doubt they are beasts we've never seen. But let me tell you: we've been blessed to watch Viper, Hera, Lierey, Tatoh, DauT, Mr Yo, Villese, Jordan and a lot more players that helped making a revolution out of this game. And they were really, really, really good.

I feel like you and TheViper are the two best players ever in this game. No one has had such big wins and such consistency as you guys, and whenever you were up against each other it always felt it could go either way. However for me it seems the Facebook years took a toll on TheViper, he had to make crazy hours streaming and that can’t be good for one. Hopefully he, and you, can keep up this level of play and give us great games in the future! And with tournament wins going both ways, I am a Viper fanboy, but no one likes a competition where everyone already knows who is the winner.

The wrist injury is one concern, but an often overlooked aspect is TheViper's advancing age. Typically, after the age of 24, a player's response time begins to decrease. In a strategy-heavy game like Age of Empires, seasoned insight can somewhat offset this, but there's still a definitive peak in performance. Especially in a highly competitive environment where rapid reflexes are key to outplay, this becomes evident. It's not just that other players have improved; it's also that TheViper is no longer at his prime. I doubt any of the current top players can consistently beat prime viper. You Hera, will eventually face this problem in your career aswell.

    • @biggbeefer
      @biggbeefer 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

It's true that reaction time declines beginning in your mid 20s but really this is not significant. It's about 3milliseconds decrease per DECADE. Viper's not even a decade older than 24 and since he trains his reaction time, there's probably been close to zero drop off. Certainly not enough to start losing fights he easily used to win. This might affect like 50 year olds trying to play a twitch shooter like valorant but I just don't think it's that big a deal in aoe

You called out a very important distinction. Greatest of all time and Greatest right now are not always the same thing.
In terms of Greatest right now, my intuition is that you, Viper, and Lierry are all in a different league from everyone else. Basically, I always assume you guys are going to win your match unless you are playing against each other. If you are playing against each other, then all bets are off. There are no guarantees except that I'm going to see exceptionally high quality play from both players.

Viper is the GOAT influence wise. I knew him first in 2018 when I got access to YT as I came to the UK to study for the first time. (YT is blocked in mainland China) I didn’t know the pro scene existed back then and when I saw his ‘masterpiece’ videos of tower rush and full ballista elephants I just thought ‘this guy is so good he’s trolling’. I googled him and found out he was the best in the world of that time, but I didn’t really follow the pro scene. In mid 2020 I came to the UK again. I later saw another video and learnt more about the AoE 2 pro scene, and how Viper’s Team Secret were dominating but aM beat them in BoA2. It was not until early last year that I began to follow the pro scene actively because of T90’s contents, and I was surprised to discover that Secret was changed to GL long ago. I played AoE2 from age 10 but Viper’s more casual contents got me to know the pro scene existed when I was 20, I’m Hera’s age btw.

Well, just to give my humble opinion, I kind of agree with Hera. A tournament now might be more competitive than a tournament back then. On the other hand, the same top players back then are still top players now. Viper, Yo, Liriey, Daut, Jordan, ... All these are still top tier players. So despite having more competitive tournaments and perhaps more pro players (or better prepared players or however you want to phrase it), the ones that get on in the tournaments are still the same ones, with a couple of younger players being there too, like Hera.
I think Viper has achieved a lot in this game during a long time, but aside from the injury, times change, players change, players age, ... Not the same being 20 than being 35 or 40. Viper will not win tournaments as he did before. But not because he is older than before. But also because new players come in and outmatch the old guard. Hera himself is one of the young players, that has perfectioned micro-ing to a level few players can match, has interesting strategies and so on. And in time, perhaps in 10 or so years, when Hera is 30 or 35, other young players might come to outrank him. One cannot always be at the top.
So yeah. Viper dominated, now looks like it's Hera's time. but I'd just like to say that I love watching these guys play.

I was or am one of those fans, I wanted viper to lose so you could win, I knew that whatever you won the first one, the victories would come and that's how it happened and now that you win everything, I want another Tatoh, Lierey or viper to win again.
I don't know the reason, I think it's because I don't see the same guy winning all the time, it's weird I don't know. But no hate at all, just to see another one win, it doesn't go any further. If you win well, if not, also.

Hera definitely better now, but Viper has 33 S-tier finals with 25 wins.

So I think people often have unnecessarily negative responses to 'reaction' content, mainly because there are so many examples of incredibly low-effort content on Twitch especially where people sit disinterestedly watching video after video with little to no commentary, and call it reaction content. That's not the same as your stuff, even if you're not always giving tons of your own input, it's still your genuine reaction to content that is about or directly from a community that you're a pillar of already. You already make plenty of informative content, so I think holding you to a super high standard for these videos too is a little unfair. All that being said, great to hear some of your expanded thoughts during this video!

Sick video by Tiramis. Maybe another cool ideia would be to analyze the impact of the RBW tournaments on the pro scene. Prizepools is big fact, of course, but maybe some elements of playstyle in the pro scene changed during this period. I can’t be sure if its fair to say viper “decline” started with the 4 x 0 finals, but considering that (and his performance until he actually won the legacy), the crazy results lierey got, and how agressive and fast plays are now. Would love to hear Hera’s toughts on that.

Good reaction, I think I'm one of your viewers who generally likes to see you react to other Age of Empires II themed videos. As long as it doesn't become your main activity, of course, I think one or two reaction videos every now and then are fine.
Additionally, I think this particular video (the one Tiramis made) is of the highest quality, including the images, editing, and script. It has a couple of factual errors, but overall I absolutely agree with the thesis it shows.

I think this is what makes comparing eras really hard. Hera is so dominant this year, but before DE, there was like one 1v1 S tier tournaments per year. The competition today is much higher, but I think a yearly S tier tournament win has quite a lot of value.
AOE unfortunately does not have many in-person tourney, but I personally think those wins are more significant, such as your grand melee win, tatoh's and viper's red bull win, etc.

    • @stefankatsarov5806

In my opinion an yearly tornament has less value compared to someting more ofthen since you can fluke a win onsw but you cant do it consistently.
So lets say 4 big tourneys a year will for sure show who is the best amd ensure that it gets harder and harder to win sinse people get the chanse to implement their strats to counter you.

I really enjoy this kind of content, the original video is excellently put together, and then having pro reactions / opinions on top adds another dimension.
It's normal for new eras to develop, TheViper reigned supreme for many years, and now its Hera's era of dominance through years of hard work and dedication, and each respective player will earn there rightful place in AoE2 history.
The G.O.A.T question will always be one that divides opinion, and for me the answer will always be DauT. Whilst he might not have the S Tier tournament victories of TheViper or Hera, his longevity at the very top of the game makes him the greatest of all time.
However you look at it the game has never been more competitive and it benefits both player and viewer.

  • @fasstaerke
    @fasstaerke 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

I agree, kind of coming back after you have struggled and new players with lots of grinding entering the scene is maybe even more impressive than winning 8 in a row. Viper always kind of reminds me of darts legen Phil Taylor who was facing a very similar challange after dominating for soooo long. Both Viper and Tyler were also part of the reason so many new players joined and challenged them and its super hard to deal with that when people start thinking youre past your prime.

Personally, the fact that viper cant train to the same extent that other players can is a handicap that he has to work around. Viper said he couldnt play day after day because his wrist felt numb. And it probably slowed down his reaction time as well. Not taking away from other players but having to consider retiring always on the back of your mind has to be mentally taxing as well.

The other thing to note, just like any sport, is that you have to compare how a player has gone against his competition for that era. Whilst the competition may be more now, Viper was obviously light years ahead of everyone from 2013-2020, with modern day mechanics, speed and tactics even back then. His popularity kept the game alive and probably indirectly lead to Microsoft making HD and subsequently DE. All of that catapults his contributions as GOAT over anyone else in the current era.

11:00 Well you are saying yourself how much Grind Players put in to achieve small Improvements, now imagine what a big part of playing your Hand does. I mean we all know the feeling of uncomfortability with a new Mouse for example. I for myself also faced some similiar health issues on the wrist like viper and i can tell you that it hurt to see how much worse i was playing. Ok in my case it were Shooters where the Hand is even more important but i can assume how much effect that actualy had on Vipers playing. Of course others got better but the Problem is, he got worse cause of the issues, even if he would have stagnated it would have taken longer to beat him. But i understand your Point of View as a young gun, but when your older you gonna realise how much Health and Age actualy effects your playing to the point were you can do whatever you want, you wont improve anymore and even get worse and worse, no matter how hard you grind. Nontheless you are the next Goat, without a doubt. You couldve been were you are now earlier if you wouldnt had quit, i mean everyone could see that. Keep it up and lets hope for some more good Years for Age of Empires even tho some important Figures slowly fade away.

First of all, i think you both are amazing players with verry different styles. I guess snoballing was/is vipers speciality. In that hidden cup with "the princes" it was most noticable. He made something happen in the frist 5-10 minutes, gained the smallest advantage, stepped back and never let this advantage go untill gg. always amazed me. But other than that, i noticed that in your and vipers reaction video Daut came up, without him beeing mentioned once in the vid. He migth not be the GOAT by the numbers, but in every other aspect he is in my opinion. To stay relevant for so freaking long in a game is just mind blowing. He might gets older and micros like a half broken school bus (still better than me btw :-) ) but you can count on him in every turnament to make something happen. Its like in other sports. There are those few guys who where amazong at there time, but still 30 years later they are in every Radio interview and game analysis and what not. It doesnt matter if theire records are long beaten by someone else. They are still there and everyone appriceates them. More than often the guys who broke theire records are long forgotten but they are still here. And everone who has ever watched/played AOE2 will know Daut. He is playing this from literaly Day 1. He is just a legend and will always be my goat for what he is for the community. I wish you and vipi that in 20 years you will be remembered in the same way he is. And who knows, maybe we will have a for example a typical Hera-TC or something like ths by than :-) I am happy that the community is as alive as it is and there is a lot of competition 💚💙💛

Another great thing is the evolution that Viper brought to the game, like, okay everyone is grinding the last 4 years way more than in the past, but how you play the game, the development of the high level it was all about viper while he was the best, quickwalling, drushing, finding odd strats that became meta after, it's like he prepared a ground to the other players, of course, everyone is bringing something new to the table, but Viper is like way ahead in this matter, and that's impresive, it's not something everyone is capable to do and even if Hera stays in the top 1 for 20 years it's not garanteed he's gonna achieve the same thing Viper did.
Same with football, everyone talks about the titles, the goals and achievement of Pelé, but in my opinion, the greatest thing he did was forcing the football sport to evolve like 30 years in 5 years, he sped up the process.

I know it hurts to come to terms with the fact that TheViper's decline started with his wrist injury as well as his hernia problems. I find it interesting that you would say that a constant wrist injury that causes excruciating pain at worst and a niggling pain in the mouse hand did not diminish his performance! If the prize money went up, TheViper would also have practiced just as much.
You are definitely an amazing player, which is undeniable. And capitalizing on the weakness of opponents when they are down is a mark of a champion who dethrones the previous one.

as an aoe4 player I think Hera and viper are both iconic and interesting. I'm always so amazed at how the viper can just casually play aoe4 a few times and rise to the very top again straight away because he has such a strong baseline sense of the game he can dominate without silly build orders and gimmicks. It's amazing to see.
