Verdi did write an alternative line for this ending, which is how Tucker sang it in this video. But many tenors forget that this aria is not some warlord that is commanding his army. It is a man thinking about the women he loves, although he is a General, so he is not going to sing like a Rodolfo either.

ONLY CORELLI KNOWS HOW TO DO THIS !!!!!

Corelli is by far the most impressive and fits with the orchestration the best in my opinion!

The best tenors to belt it out are Enrico Caruso and Mario del Monaco. As for the tenors singing morendo, they have to be Helge Rosvaenge and Franco Corelli.

Without is much more spectacular for sure... with is probably more in accordance with the composer's ideal!
Inspite of that I do prefer without😅

The last phrases are supposed to be an echo to Radames' line. They are supposed to be lyrical, dreamy, soft, tender etc.. This way of ending is so iconic Verdi and it appeared a lot in his operas (even in the same opera, the last phrase of O Patria Mia also ends in a soft high note). I personally would go for Verdi's own way. I don't need to hear the tenor blast a Bb so early in the opera :)

also... virtually no one observes the phrased staccato on "vicino_al" which makes the mechanism balanced, flexible + enables a mid/low-dynamic approach.

Verdi ha scritto morendo per cui va eseguito morendo e non un fortissimo come frequentemente si ascolta...basta leggere la partitura

Prefer this with the morendo, which matches the flow of the orchestral line.

i prefer that whoever sings it chooses how they sound best. But Verdi wrote it...morendo isnt 'attack mezza voce + stay there' or sff B flat + dim.

    1. A notoriously difficult aria to pull off. It occurs right at the start of the opera.
    2. Verdi knew very well the vocal capacities of singers and marked his scores with very precise markings.
    3. "Tradition" is not a good reason to ignore a composer's stated intentions. Verdi wrote to his publisher that he did not approve alternative high note endings or any other diverging from his score in performance.
    4. Morendo = dying away and is a question of losing intensity until no sound is left.
    5. Verdi's marks are ppp dim. morendo.
Why that should not be evident to conductors and tenors escapes me.
It is not even admisible to start the last note forte and make a diminuendo; that's completely contrary to Verdi's wish.
None of these performances is in conformity with the score. Not to mention an added swimming pool acoustic for one and clear electronic manipulation for Correlli.

Verdi did write a revision which is how Tucker performed it, in this video. Corelli's version is not electronical he did it live.

The score already has pp on the lead up to the Bb - Verdi was clear that he wanted the high note to also be soft, and getting softer as per the morendo marking. How do you do this vocally? It should be a mixed sound - or as Rosvaenge does - a mostly falsetto sound. The orchestration doesn't support a fortissimo Bb. Del Monaco is awful - flat, loud and forced.

I really dont understand Caruso, Im just gonna be honest. Maybe its just that there aren't any decent recordings of him. ButI swear in every recording he just sounds...fine. Like he knows how to sing, hes in tune and stuff. But he doesn't sound especially remarkable or anything. I mean compared to Bjorling (who also has no good recordings) he sounds outrught bad. Same compared to old Pavarotti, Corelli, or Gedda records.

Caruso sang into a horn to record on wax cylinders didn't he?
Recorded movements were of limited length.

If San Peppino( Giuseppe Verdi) has written it like that, there is a reason. Musically ,the forte Bb, it's a blasphemy! Those are useless "usi e costumi" of stupid singers. And the filato, morendo it's not a little bit more difficult: it's another technique and not every singer are capable of doing it in the higher portion of voice. If you don't speak currently Italian you miss half of the mistakes they do singing.
    P.S. Where is Bergonzi's one?
