So I brought up some points about amplifier power needs, I obviously didn't even try to touch the subjective topic of sound. But I also didn't touch on things like RMS vs peak output, crest factor, high dynamic range content, impedance variance throughout frequency response, EQ and so on. Its a complicated subject that perhaps deserves a video in its own right. I might do it one day, but only if I can manage to do the subject the justice it demands. In the meantime I highly recommend reading up on it. For the most part though, it doesn't need to be overcomplicated for the newcomers.
Well, what I can tell you from my observations is that you can talk about those technical issues forever, and it will never be enough talking, no matter how well presented, and irrespective of presenter. 😉Don’t sweat it, Idt that YT is a good forum to try to tackle that much, even over the course of several videos. I think what you’re doing is fine. 👨🏻
I think you did an outstanding job. Either "class" of audiophile got plenty of important and key information to start or continue their purchasing project. The importance of power should have it's own long video to be sure. It is extremely important and affects areas of sound more profoundly than people think. Good Job. Be well!
Really good on you to get real with people. It's easy to have fun learning about different equipment, but us newbies can get into our own heads with all the talk in the mid-fi range and up. Never watched your videos, but kudos to you, hope for your continued growth mate. Definitely should mention how Schitt and other American companies(Geshelli, JDS) also have the benefit of their amazing service and warranty. Schitt's is 5 years I think.
Yeah, their warranty and process is easy enough from my experience lol. My modi I picked up about a year ago (paired it with a vali cuz tube go brr) didn't come working with either optical or aux inputs... so I sent it back for repair or replacement (not sure what they did) and the replacement arrived.. it only works with optical. Irdk how this situation happens, I'm sure I could get it fixed if I go through the process again, I might have to depending on whether or not my next mobo supports optical or not. It's rather annoying having to change the cables to the splitter when I want to use my mixer. I CAN say however, that the silver stack is a very pretty desk ornament. I don't think I could take it off my desk if I wanted to, it looks so gorgeous. It also sounds quite nice imo, but I'm not a cultured audiophile for that matter.
Great video! Well spoken and in-depth information given. Just purchased this "beginner" stack for my daily driven HD560S' and HD6XX. Thanks for the info!
Wheezy I've gotta say, you're truly the best audiophile channel for reasonable consumers. There's just so much great audio available for less than a grand, and you're really nailing it. Would really like to hear your thougths on IEMs, since so many have been hitting the market and even though you're a headphone guy I'd like to hear your thoughts.
The unison usb really works. I have a certain laptop with built in usb ports are noisy on my creative headphone dac but external dock usb is fine. The Modi+ and Bifrost are dead silent with unison usb and same usb port.
Thanks for this video. I just purchased a Modi+ for $129 to run the WiiM Mini streamer into the toslink input and switch between that and an Onkyo CD player’s transport into the coaxial input on the Modi in the Rec room stereo system. I first decided to run it a few days on my “better” studio system and ran the coaxial output of an older decent Denon CD player into the Modi. I found the Modi to have a slight edge over the Denon’s internal DAC on comparison of various source material, so I think the Modi + will be a good fit for the application I intended. 👨🏻 I guess it would have been really sweet at $99, but time (inflation) marches on. I got the Wiim Mini streamer/dac for $79 a few months back.. it was on sale the other day for maybe 24 hours at $66 ! 🤣
Wish you all could experience the Nitsch X Magni Peity. You can only buy it secondhand now as only 1k was released in the U.S. Hopefully, more will be released because this amp is fantastic and punches well above its limited release price.

Totally agree with your perspective on amps and dacs. As far as dacs go I would never ever, ever spend 2000 dollars on a dac As for amps I own the original magni 3, the monolith liquid spark and the objective 02. They all sound the same to me, and they all have enough power to drive the vast majority of headphones, that includes my 600 Ohm Beyer dt 990 Premium, and they all have a high gain switch if anyone prefers that.
@@lawpenner if anyone wants to spend more than what it costs to buy any of the three amps I mentioned, all of which sound the same to me, go ahead knock yourself out.
After over a year of use with my Drop 6xx with no discrete amp or dac, I am finally getting around to buying a Schiit stack. The biggest questions is do I go with the Vale 3 or the Magni unity? I plan on buying a Modi+ DAC with either option, then the Loki mini EQ down the road.

for anyone wondering: do not buy anything (including this) that doesn't have digital volume control (perfect channel balance). it matters far more than you would think to general sound quality. You need a combo unit to get that, and not every combo has it, so make sure to ask or look specifically for it.
Magni+ and Magni heretic are on clearance on the Schitt site ($60 and $50 respectively). They are still $99 on their Amazon store. I'm a little concerned that these are on clearance... was it a bad batch?
No, they have "too many" headamps" in the same class some new, some a little older and some even more old. They have too much stock and thus clearing out the warehouse. It not any faulty technical concerns as far as the research I did. Btw, those $60 Magni+ are terrific! People should scoop those up, if not as alternates then as gifts or family/friends. It's truly a great amp.
I've been looking at the Schiit Magni+ and Modi+, but I also had a look at the Pro-Ject Head Box S2 Digital. But I am curious about the power rating of the Head Box S2 Digital. You listed the power rating of the Magni+, and those are the same numbers that are on Schiit's website, but the power rating for the Pro-Ject amp/DAC is apparently 68 mW @ 32Ω, and 6.6 mW @ 600Ω. That seems extremely low compared to the Magni+. Are they measuring the same thing? I'm confused.
I think the 100dollar schiit lineup is finally perfected... the first renditions had some serious design flaws, like the headphone jack plugging in right next to the volume knob, and the gain switch being on the back, making both of these things a bit of a pain in the a** to access. Now the gain switch is in front next to the volume knob, and the headphone jack plugs in where the old schiit logo used to be, it's perfect, and the Modi now has a button, instead of a 3-point switch, so now you don't have to apply surgical precision to select the middle input anymore. xD The stack is in a state where i don't think it requires improvement anymore, beyond maybe less distortion at high gain, and other qualities that don't affect the external design. And they use USB-C now, incredible! Perfection itself... of course, i will never own this stack, as i own the previous renditions, and they still function perfectly... I guess i could sell them at half price, but i'm so fking lazy. xD
Totally agree, this lil stack has it all now. I'm sure they'll tweak it down the line, but I don't think they need to. Maybe bring out a Heretical version without the red bottom chassis, that'll be nice. I'd like them to find a way to get them over to the UK much cheaper, they are pretty expensive over here compared to US prices.
