The avalanche theory just doesn't seem plausible to me. I mean it explains why they would have to cut themselves out of the tent, and even why they might initially panic and run down the mountain, but doesn't explain why they wouldn't immediately calm down and assess the damage and retrieve their equipment. I mean, there were still skis stuck in the snow standing upright so the avalanche couldn't have been that bad if that's what it was. The only naturalistic explanation that makes any sense to me would be the infrasound angle. But even then, that's such a well documented phenomenon with many modern day examples. And yes it happens and yes it makes people feel weird, but no it doesn't drive them into blind panic. Like it's a big thing with skyscrapers, but people don't throw themselves out the windows or run out of the building without their coats into the cold and refuse to come back inside. I just don't think the unease caused by infrasound could provide the proper motivation for a bunch of people to choose to sit there for hours and freeze to death rather than go retrieve the equipment. The tent being cut open suggests absolute blind panic. You can well imagine someone, maybe several of them at once, fumbling with the door trying to undo the flap and being too panicked to make their fingers work and one of the others just being like, Frack this nonsense, and yanking out his knife and slicing the tent wall open. And sure, an avalanche, even one as minor as that hypothetical one must have been, would have temporarily induced that much panic, potentially, but I just cannot imagine them not immediately going back to assess the damage and get their equipment. I mean you run down the mountain and once you're safe you clam down, realize you're going to freeze to death, and immediately realize the only thing to do is go back and try and find it and dig it out. And I can't imagine it was enough snow to cover up their tent to the point where they couldn't find it again because their skis were still standing upright. And even if they did have trouble finding the tent again, they would have been found dead on the mountainside looking for it. The parachute mines make sense to me. That would arguably provide the proper motivation to not only cause the initial panic but provide the continued threat to discourage them from going back for hours. You can imagine them being awoken by loud explosions all around them, being too panicked to summon the motor skills to open the tent flap, someone being like frack it and cutting the tent open, and then running down to the tree line. Then the explosions continue for minutes or hours or whatever it might be. Then at some point someone climbs the tree to try and see what's going on or maybe try to assess if it's over or not. Maybe it's even ongoing and they're arguing whether the explosions are far enough away to risk going back to the tent, and that's where they can't agree and one party tries to get back to the tent while the others try to get to the cache of supplies. Then the next day the Soviet military comes in by helicopter or whatever to assess the results of the experiment, finds the camp, now the KGB is involved and they clean up all the evidence and sweep everything under the rug by the time the investigators get there. And then there's something on the camera that potentially is problematic so the Soviets force the investigators to keep those photos classified and not talk about them. That would also explain why the Russian government is still keeping them classified. You would think since the Soviets are gone the current government would tell the truth, but there's a lot of stuff that the Russian government keeps secret to this day just to try and protect the image of the former Soviets. Like for example, they still keep classified the documents on what certain German engineers worked on because they don't want to admit how much of a role the German engineers had to play in alleged Soviet innovations post WWII. Like we see that with Schmeisser the firearms engineer as it relates to the development of the AK47 even, which is pretty small beans honestly. But to this day the Russians won't admit that Schmeisser was involved in that program. And then you have all the German rocket scientists and nobody really knows what role they had to play in the Soviets early space race successes. And we pretty much know a bunch of cosmonauts were killed in early attempts and there's even a lot of question as to whether some of the famous cosmonauts even went into space or whether they were just celebrity figures to cover up the fact that the actual cosmonauts were basically crash test dummies getting killed on the regular. So yea, if the Soviet military accidentally killed a bunch of kids and then covered it up, I would fully expect that the Russian government would continue to hide that to this very day, because that 100% fits with their MO. Honestly, if it were aliens I think the Russian government would probably disclose it and declassify the photos now because that would exonerate the Soviets of wrongdoing. Or at least they would be more likely I think to admit to aliens than to Soviet wrongdoing. The fact that they're still hiding something to this day reeks of Soviet wrongdoing. Like if the current Russian government is hiding something the Soviets did the better part of 100 years ago, you can pretty much bet on it being that the Soviets did something wrong. As far as their equipment, chances are they were probably wearing a lot of wool, which is still popular for climbers to this day, and many prefer it over synthetics. Down was absolutely available at the time, and is by far the preferred insulation for that kind of weather even to this day, much preferred over any modern material. About the only major difference between the equipment today and the equipment back then is instead of modern hard shells they would have had probably waxed or oiled canvas. But honestly in that relatively dry weather they would probably perform pretty similarly to modern shells. They would have kept the insulation dry and been breathable. The only major disadvantages would have been the weight and packability, but that wouldn't have impacted their ability to stay warm. Now what they actually had I don't know. I mean I guess if they were just super under funded and went out with whatever they had then maybe. But I really think being Russians and living in that cold they would have at least had wool socks and glove liners and long underwear and scarves and that kind of thing. Plus the whole idea that they just woke up freezing and abandoned their camp doesn't make sense. That's not how that works. You wake up long before you're actually hypothermic and start putting clothes on. Like as the temps dropped they would have woken up uncomfortably cold and started putting on every article of clothing they had and only once fully dressed would they have given up and left. They also would have made something hot to drink. Been there done that too many times. You wake up before you're even shivering. And honestly, just that many people inside of a relatively wind proof tent huddling together would be enough to prevent hypothermia down to some really cold temps. Add food, hot beverages, and adequate clothing into the mix and there's absolutely no reason why they shouldn't have been perfectly fine if not even relatively comfortable in any possible weather in there.
I think this episode is the most disturbing one yet. Seriously freaky. Possible energy weapons testing in an area where the hikers weren't aware of the testing, and those testing weren't aware of hikers in the area? That's the best guess I've got.
I wrote my comment before you mentioned parachute mines. I would think if that was it, wouldn't there be evidence? I still think there was testing, but with more advanced weapons than was admitted to for the times they were in.
The only survivor, Yuri Yudin, was often asked what he thought happened to his companions. He maintained until his death in 2013 that the Soviet military had to be involved in the deaths.
I love that y’all listen to Astonishing Legends and are covering some of the topics of past episodes. I love the fact that you bring in Biblical context of the topics, you don’t shy away from it and it’s refreshing! As Christians we shouldn’t ignore the vail that separates us from the living and whatever is on the other side. There are too many accounts, like in your stories, that make it hard to believe that all of it’s made up.
Love yall's content, but I honestly think ya'll should do a 3 part series or something. Because its so much more bizzare then whats told in just one episode. Justice isnt done in just one. But great work!
I can just see those young people hanging out in their tent... chillin... 😌 All of a sudden, a bright beam of light shines down on them from above 😬... possible abduction attempt..? 🧐 & it does sound like quite a few of them fell out of a tree at some point... 🤔 This is a crazy event to hear about... 😳 First timer to this story... Fascinating... Linking arms to prevent any of them from being "taken"..? 😬
Well that last story was one of the most disturbing things I’ve ever heard. I wouldn’t normally criticize your background noises (since they generally enhance the experience) but…were those head smashing sounds really necessary?😅 Either way it was another great episode. 11/10 👍
I like the ball lightning story told at the end. It's inventive and makes a lot of sense and explains quite a bit. There are just two things keeping me from being able to buy it as the cause of the Dyatlov Pass inciden. For one, I don't buy whatsoever the explanation of decomp and animals being the reason for the missing eyes, tongue, etc. The temperature and being buried in snow would've prevented decomp--hence the photos of the victims showing them PERFECTLY PRESERVED. And if animals were responsible for the missing body parts, there'd be signs of the predation, like scratch marks, teeth marks, etc. The eyes were cleanly removed, as in inoculation, not pulled out or eaten out by animals. There wasn't any mention of animal footprints around the bodies or blood or anything, nor were there pictures of that because that's not what happened! Also, there wasn't any signs of predation on the two fireside victims. Nothing missing from them. So, in my mind, the missing body parts are still unexplained. And as far as I know, ball lightning doesn’t inoculate people nor rip out their tongues! Secondly, ball lightning doesn't explain the radiation present on scene and on the victims. Neither does an avalance, which was one of the other leading theories. So, what does that leave us with? If you think about the lights the local tribe spoke of and line that up with the same type of lights at the Skinwalker Ranch and the damage it did to the Sherman's dogs and the fact that there was also radiation at the ranch like there was with the Dyatlov victims, then you have a theory that these orbs of light are responsible and for reasons I've already explained, they aren't ball lightning. So, whether the orbs of light are nephilim posing as something alien or they're some kind of unknown technology, who's to say. But for me, unless someone can show that ball lightning leaves radiation in it's wake and rips out people's eyes and tongues, I'm call the orbs responsible and saying they're either supernatural or technological in origin. I am still really uncomfortable with the behavior of the Russian government after this incident. Whether it was demonic or technological orbs or ball lightning that's somehow radioactive, they wouldn't have understood what happened. People fear what they don't understand, so they may be inclined to cover it up because they have no explanation for it and either don't want to appear weak or ignorant. And this being Russia, they'd probably want to study things and see if they can weaponize whatever happened. But either way, why draw suspicion with the ridiculous autopsy? Why the multiple investigations? Why was the final investigator, in the middle of his investigation, told to stop investigating and then any further investigation forbidden? Why were there nine photos withheld? Why not issue their perfunctory coverup story after ONE short investigation for show and then issue their standard pat answer? You can't look at all this and not think RUSSIAN COVER! It just adds to the mystery of this incident.
That last story-especially the lady slamming her own head on a rock-sounds like it could have been at least a partial inspiration for the movie, Bird Box. 😱
Thank you! We release main episodes every other Wednesday, though we do release our full episodes early and ad-free at patreon.com/haunted cosmos for most tiers of support.
I haven't finished the episode yet, but would a meteor breaking up in the atmosphere cause exposure to radiation? Cause the tree to go up in flames and burn a portion of a body? Caue the impact to the head? It would cause the snow to melt and refreeze.
About the tent: it had buttons, so unbuttoning it would take more time than cutting it IF they were in a hurry. But it seems they weren’t in a hurry cause the footprints showed they walked calmly, like normally would. The most unexplained thing is Why they left the tent in the middle of the night the way they did, partially dressed and with no footwear, and How the last 4 of them had those terrible injuries (broken ribs, and skull fracture) cause it couldn’t be cause of snow falling on them right?
note to self...have copius amounts of water on hand while podcasting b/c apparently it makes one extremely thirsty. Or take in more than a hummingbird each time to cut down the frequency.
Speaking for a long time, like singing, really dries you out. I don't know all the medical ins and outs of how it works. But I used to sing on my church's worship team and struggled with that. Plus, it depends how warm/dry the room is as well.
The final True Detective season was based on this, I just realized. A group of men ran out of their compound and died outside, without clothing, for some unknown reason. Even a girl having her tongue removed was in the series.
You should share the pics on the screen as you tell the stories involving pics. Otherwise, I'm trying to search for the photos online, but not sure if the ones I find are the pics you are referencing. Just a thought.
We do our own sound design, but we don't do all the foley work by any means. We use several different services for SFX that properly compensate creators.
It seems like none of the proposed scenarios are able to offer an explanation of the radiation. The ball lighting one seems the most compelling, but it still leaves that piece out.
Context banner and classified photos…. Update: after continuing the video there is radiation, lethal concussive force, and burns. I think the case is solved lol
The injuries of the snow den group were too catastrophic to be caused by just an avalanche. Fists were bruised, like they were defensive wounds, and skulls fractured and pieces of skull missing. I think they climbed the tree to escape something. They obviously thought they could get to their storage cache of lifesaving supplies after they left the tent but got turned around and were going the wrong way, down the other side of the mountain where they had not trekked before. In the cold weather minutes count. They were uninjured at the time they built the snow cave. Put branches on the ground inside. They were still coherent. Then something happened. Something attacked them. Could have been a large herd of reindeer trampling them or some other animal. But their bodies were discovered under 13 feet of snow. They had fled the snow cave. So again something had scared them to leave their shelter. Coroner speculates on the injuries but does not come to any firm conclusions. The force for crushing the ribs he said would have to be by something not human. Force of being hit by a car or a bomb. No prints detailed to show an intruder. Wild animal tracks not detailed and would probably have been covered by new snow after the deaths. It’s a mystery. The more you think you might have a reasonable explanation, the more unexplained it becomes.
So the reason hypothermia victims take their clothes off is a physiological process called shunting. The body attempts to preserve internal organs by constricting vessels in the extremities (common in hemorrhagic trauma as well). This centralizes blood through the larger organs (why you find blood in the lungs etc...etc..) what happens right before you die of hypothermia as your body begins to shutdown and loses control of the vascularity your vessels open, flooding your body with the warmer blood from you core. This causes the sense of euphoria and gives hyperthermia victims the feeling of intense heat and sometimes burning, causing them often times to remove clothes to cool off.
The hikers were killed, likely be a tribe. The internal injuries are actually visible from outside bruises. These hikers walked slowly away from their tent for over a mile, which would take them over an hour. They were likely forced out of their tent and made the walk down to the forest. You won't cut your way out of a tent leaving no signs of panic inside the tent and slowly walk down a mountain in sub zero temps. to a forest in where they received their injuries. They were forced out, and finished off in the. There were Mansi hunters within a 2-mile radius of them during this incident. These hikers were murdered.
This always interested me as why? Theories... Snow slab (2019 conclusion, but doesn't explain the radiation) Soviet military in the area testing Mansi hunters Katabatic wind Kármán vortex street Paradoxical undressing (that's pretty much out there) and of course, and really not probable. 1. UFOs (little green men) 2. Sasquatch Where can someone buy this vinyl? Anyways....
I thoroughly enjoyed this episode, but would have very much appreciated a warning before the last story. I would have skipped it if I knew how graphic and freaky it would be! Plus the sound effects 😰
I just found out about this a week ago and I've been cramming as much info about this unto my brain as I can. First I believed the slab avalanch but they lived too long afterwards...unless they were that unlucky that two avalanches happened. Then i wondered about the khanti/mansi, which still seems the most legit "boring" answer. Katabatic winds would make sense for leaving the tent in the condition that it was found but doesn't explain why they would think its a good idea to climb the big cedar tree...? THERES NOT ONE THEORY TO COVER ALL OF IT! Its so maddening and fascinating all at the same time. These 9 people were smart and they were prepared. I can only think of a few things that would make them walk...one after the other...a mile away from their tent with no form of shoes. Soviet weapons testing? 😑or some form of armed people?
One thought people have is that they left their tent because something or someone was after them. I can't see that as a possibility because why if they were trying to get away from a person or even an animal, the last thing I'd do is light a fire to be seen by whoever. And why would three of them want to go back up the hill toward the danger they fled from.
Out of the scores of retellings of this incident that I have heard - probably closer to hundreds - I have NEVER heard ANYONE actually take this amount of time to talk about the victims as PEOPLE and paint a picture, as you did, of who they were on a personal level.

My brothers in Christ, that last story is so haunting. What a great episode and bromance is true romance.
That last story is the stuff of nightmares.
my suggestion is you should show the pictures while talking about it
Fabulous production boys!💞💞
WE NEED MORE CONTENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WE'RE HOOKED 🐟🐟
The only survivor, Yuri Yudin, was often asked what he thought happened to his companions. He maintained until his death in 2013 that the Soviet military had to be involved in the deaths.
Noted, Hugh.
We need an episode on dopplegangers with both of you having goatees.
That last story was gruesome. There are some strange things that happen in this world that we all like to pretend is so known & relatively safe.
I can just see those young people hanging out in their tent... chillin... 😌
All of a sudden, a bright beam of light shines down on them from above 😬... possible abduction attempt..? 🧐
& it does sound like quite a few of them fell out of a tree at some point... 🤔
This is a crazy event to hear about... 😳
First timer to this story...
Agree. I don't go for the sound effects when they're gross or annoying.
🚩How did you miss the Photo of Bigfoot they took? It was THE LAST PHOTO... 🤦♀
Was that a parks and rec “straight to jail” reference? Gorgeous
That last story-especially the lady slamming her own head on a rock-sounds like it could have been at least a partial inspiration for the movie, Bird Box. 😱
I love to hear good playing of both the harmonica and mandolin!
You two are amazing! I keep looking for more episodes and I've seen them all 😁. Just curious how long until another Haunted Cosmos?
Thank you! We release main episodes every other Wednesday, though we do release our full episodes early and ad-free at patreon.com/haunted cosmos for most tiers of support.
@@hauntedcosmos_ need to fix patreon link lol it goes to some harry potter bitch
That last story was nuts!!
Also, since yall are doing video of these, could you add the pictures you are talking about? HAve them flash on the screen?
Best podcast ever
This story makes me want to hear these guys' take on the horrific Hinterkaifek murders.
I got that N.I.C.E. Reference!
I haven't finished the episode yet, but would a meteor breaking up in the atmosphere cause exposure to radiation? Cause the tree to go up in flames and burn a portion of a body? Caue the impact to the head? It would cause the snow to melt and refreeze.
Wow. Your music is incredible. I had no idea
Bro , why are you underestimating snow? A snow can do a lot of physical damage
The lighting prop reminds me of the Impossible window in the movie The Shining. 😃
note to self...have copius amounts of water on hand while podcasting b/c apparently it makes one extremely thirsty. Or take in more than a hummingbird each time to cut down the frequency.
maybe try a humidifier for the studio. looks to be a bit dry in there...
OK. Do not these incidences smell of a PORTAL ???
So any mention of the photos taken! ? Any mention of the writtin account in the dairy about yeti??
I love the harmonica ❤
It’s called a record jacket not a vinyl casing
Hahahaha! And the spinny contraption you play it on is called a record player. Darn, when did I get so old?
Quick question, how do you guys create your sound effects?
We do our own sound design, but we don't do all the foley work by any means. We use several different services for SFX that properly compensate creators.
It seems like none of the proposed scenarios are able to offer an explanation of the radiation. The ball lighting one seems the most compelling, but it still leaves that piece out.
Unless the paranormal ball of light creature can also irradiate its victims.
Er . . . . that would be a record sleeve(at least in the UK)
An "unusual" avalanche... sure, most Radioactive avalanches could be called unusual.
Here to generate YT revenue. Appreciate this content.
Yep that lighting ball phenomenon is obwiously well know thing because it is included in the Stalker games, also in the Metro games.
The Russian Federation is still hesitant to give out those nine picture frames and negatives. Very peculiar.
Context banner and classified photos….
Update: after continuing the video there is radiation, lethal concussive force, and burns. I think the case is solved lol
Amazing! Any place where we could download the posters?
does anyone know what kind of microphone they use? Great episode!!
I have been enjoying your channel, just discovered this week. I must know, do you write your own material or are you reading from somewhere else?

Trying to remember when I first heard this story.
* shudder *
What a horror. (Not that there's very many pleasant ways to die!)
Should add pictures when possible:)
Some of this sounds like a massive lighting storm
Wow are both stories similar with the crushed skulls and how the bodies are lined up
It's like real scary movie stuff. Incredible
Nuclear, radioactive parachute mines?! It was obviously the Abominable Snow Comrade
My favourite part is when Ben just drinks straight from the pitcher of water like a chad king instead of bothering himself with pouring a glass.
Theories...
Snow slab (2019 conclusion, but doesn't explain the radiation)
Soviet military in the area testing
Mansi hunters
Katabatic wind
Kármán vortex street
Paradoxical undressing (that's pretty much out there)
and of course, and really not probable.
1. UFOs (little green men)
2. Sasquatch
Where can someone buy this vinyl?
Anyways....
I thoroughly enjoyed this episode, but would have very much appreciated a warning before the last story. I would have skipped it if I knew how graphic and freaky it would be! Plus the sound effects 😰
Will be published new books on dyatlov pass mysteries??
The Lia radiological accident is a very different story, but has some similar elements.
I am at work. This was a sad story or life advent.
One thought people have is that they left their tent because something or someone was after them. I can't see that as a possibility because why if they were trying to get away from a person or even an animal, the last thing I'd do is light a fire to be seen by whoever.
And why would three of them want to go back up the hill toward the danger they fled from.
Ball lightning? Demonic entity materialized inside the tent? Angry Orbs appeared in the tent?
