I am 74…when I was a child…must have been 4 years old, we lived in Lubbock, Texas…back then children ran all over unheeded. One day, I happened to look inside the gate of a tall wooden fence that surrounded a back yard when I spotted a cocker spaniel splashing in a swimming pool trying to get out unsuccessfully. I ran if and flopped down on the ground by the edge of the pool where the puppy was splashing, reached out and grabbed it…and gave as might a pull as I could manage. I was able to get the dog out and to my young mind, it was now safe. The pup ran up onto a porch and into a doggie door while I ran out and hightailed it home. I never told my mother because I knew I would probably get a spanking but I was always glad that I had pulled the little dog out of that pool. I guess that little dog has been gone for 60 years or more now but I have never forgotten it and I hope it had good thoughts about little redheaded, freckled-faced girls now and again.

    • @scoutylugs
      @scoutylugs ปีที่แล้ว +44

      100%
For all the idiots complaining about that punch to the kangaroo, if you’re not from Aust and/or haven’t dealt with Roos or seen how they fight… stfu.
The Roo was not hurt, it was just given a shock to back it off from an attack and given where ol boy found himself after rescuing his dog, it was necessary.
That Roo’s posture is half bluff, half prep to fight.
Roo’s postured up like that are deciding if they’re about to lean back on their tail and let loose with those back legs and then move in to F you up!
You can see it loading up to attack as it shuffles forward with its weight supported by its tail so it can let those hind legs fly. It shunts forward a few times to get in range as it’s deciding whether to attack or not. That’s a fighting move/shuffle, not a normal kangaroo hop.
Ol boy here puffed up also (natural) gave the Roo a quick a shock, stepped back and then they both disengaged.
In the circumstances he possibly saved himself a serious injury (we can’t tell what the Roo MIGHT have done - but we can sure say the shock of it made the Roo reconsider and not act).
Also, the Roo wasn’t a Red (per some comments) and also nowhere near 6’5” (like some Reds can get) as you can see even postured up it’s still just shorter than guy. BUT a strong large Grey roo can still F you up badly.
I’m NOT advocating nor condemning hunting, am making no comment on the dog getting caught to start with or why they were there - that’s a YOU position to decide, HOWEVER if you’ve just run in to save your Dog and a big Grey shapes up, you wanna try and back it off BEFORE it decides to lean into that tail and let loose with the hind legs.
Greys regularly fight each other where I’m from. We’ve had to stop soccer games and practise because they have come into the pitch to go at each other and i can tell you, an angry Roo is scarier than you may think.
They’re also much much stronger and tougher than you’d imagine.
I’ve had a Roo half this size jump out in front of my car at night while I was doing around 25mph (40km/hr) and when I hit it, it was thrown at LEAST 40 feet down the road, sliding on the bitumen before getting up, looking around and hopping off without any major visible injuries. Was awful that it was hit and I hope it was ultimately ok, but I can tell you, they’re TOUGH! This punch did nothing to really hurt the guy, it just backed him out of attacking.
Finally - these lads are Aussie hunters going after pigs. Believe me when I say they are armed to take that Roo out without a seconds hesitation - but they don’t, they let it leave once his dog is safe. If anything, that was what surprised me given the normal culture of pig (and roo) shooting - he just wanted his dog safe and they let the Roo on it’s way. Many hunting groups wouldn’t have.

The men who hunt them also dress them in the field and then donate the meat to help feed poor people. It was tabby so I didn't see it til almost one it, so I swerved to put it between my tires so I didn't flatten the poor thing, stopped jumped out and got him. I was able to adopt him out to someone else, as I already had 3 cats. But the adrenaline from the near miss alone was wild.

I definitely understand the love for animals. Years ago I had a 2-year old fox terrier and had recently adopted a 6-month old puppy. One snowy January day my fiance and I were on a walk with them around a frozen lake. All of a sudden the 2-year old went running across the lake with the puppy following. At one part of the lake, the ice stopped. Both my dogs ended up in the icy water. The older one could swim, but the puppy couldn't and began going under. I ran across the icy lake and tried to lay on the edge of the ice to reach them. The ice didn't hold and I went in. The first thing I did was grab each one and throw them back on the ice for my fiance to get them. At that point I tried to climb out but the ice kept breaking off. My fiance quickly found a large branch and held it out for me to grab on to. He then was able to get me out. I'd never think twice about helping any animal in need if there's anything I could do about it.
After warming up at home, later that evening, we went ice skating.

I can so relate to the kitten story because I had a similar experience of my own. My husband was at work and went outside for his break when he sees a car open there window and throw a cat out of it. They were going about 25mph and just threw her out like she was trash. My husband went to go see if she was hurt and she was so scared she hide under his truck for his entire 12 hour shift. When my husband was done his shift he didn't see the cat so he opened his door and she jumped in. This poor cat had a very hard life she would try to meow but nothing would come out. She was skin and bones and had alot of different stages of healing fracture all over. The vet said there was damage done to her throat and she most likely was strangled and that's why she couldn't meow. We named her baby and she was the most loving cat and was my husbands favorite.(we have 11 cats) We had her for almost 5 years before she past away she took her last breath in my husbands arms. It is amazing how forgiving animals are and I hope she felt the love we had for her!

Those folks upset with Tonkins for punching that 6.5 foot kangaroo, obviously have no idea how dangerous kangaroos are. Especially large males. It’s a good bet that if he hadn’t punched the kangaroo, when he turned his back, it would have attacked him. It was bouncing toward him after it lost it’s grip on the dog. That punch to the face of the kangaroo stunned it, giving Tonkins time to safely put some distance between himself and the kangaroo, and collect his dogs. Kangaroos, while normally pretty docile, are extremely strong animals with claws that can disembowel a human. Many people over the years have been injured by kangaroos. Dogs are injured or killed by kangaroos every year, but that is usually the result of dogs harassing the kangaroo. An interesting fact about those deaths is that kangaroos often will lure the dog(s) into a pond or river, and then drown the dog. In any case, the kangaroo was not injured, and neither was Tonkins, or his dogs.

    • @chrismoji9403

Thank you for clarifying that. I think not many people outside of Australia realize how dangerous kangaroos can be, especially those big muscular males. I too felt that the man's single punch was necessary. It made the kangaroo rethink taking him on.

I saved both my guinea pig and our family dog. Nursed them back to health. Our husky Rocky, got parvovirus because the vet didnt give him the right vaccine. So he got sick and almost died, and needed to be hospitalized but in the city there was nowhere to be hospitalized. So since im in 5th year medical school, i could be his personal home hospital. So the veterinarian Dr supplied me with materials and at home I was doing Rocky's intravenous solutions. Thank God that our team effort paid off and he is alive and healthy! My sweet guinea pig, Cookie, got injured on her wooden house that she chewed, it scratched her on her back, and she got an abscess. Because of this abscess, via the blood route, she somehow got pneumonia, and she had to be on antibiotics. And she didnt want to eat or drink, so i would feed her with a syringe and give her food and water, and even stay up all night listening to her struggling breathing, hoping to make it to the next days dose of antibiotic, and feeding her water with a syringe in the night and not sleeping. I am so thankful to God that my sweet babies are all alive and healthy and happy. I cannot take full credit, but at least with my medical knowledge I prevented things from getting more complicated. I hospitalized my animals in my home and the sweet babies are alive and healthy❤❤❤

All the rescues affected my emotions of fear, love and admiration of the rescuers'. While I was babysitting my 2yo grand-daughter, I had to fight off a pitbull that had a hold of my daughters dog... Honey, by her neck. Honey, during the attack did not fight back; but instead, used all her strength and sturdiness to stay on her feet (so wise of her & I admire her!); that pitbull couldn't budge her downward as he was yanking down on her! He finally let go of her neck, then as Honey was turning to get away, he grabbed her shoulder and started yanking down on her again! Meanwhile, all the owner was doin, was repeatedly yelling "I don't know what to do"... The dog finally let go, and the owner took off after I went in the house w/Honey to get pen/paper for her info. A neighbor up the block was pointing which direction she fled & another neighbor down the block drove up (as he heard my screaming at the dog) and then took off to find her which he did & pic'd her license plate. Honey had to have emergency surgery to her neck and her shoulder filleted open. The owner was found and learned that she was already in court for a previous attack... we were the 3rd offense. Her neighborhood previously banned her from walking her dog in their community; so that day, she decided to drive into town and walk the dog in my daughter's neighborhood. Thank God my grandbaby stayed on the porch like I told her... her 13 yo brother was with her. Thank God the dog didn't turn on me! I did fracture a few bones in my hand as I was beating him on his head defending my beloved Honey-Bear! Viewing pics & msgs on the owner's fb, she put on red lipstick and kissed the dogs head where I was beating him, she encouraged this dog to kill ckns, climb trees after cats. Found out by Animal Control that Honey was the same breed as the other 2 dogs it had attacked... Border Collies'. The owner is at fault for this dog behavior as it was not trained properly. They had to pay Honey's $900.00 vet bill, rebuild their backyard fence; plus, the dog had to be on a lease and muzzled whenever outside; It's last chance of survival. I feel this owner did a hugh injustice in quality of life for this pitbull... and her neglect, placed several lifes' in jeopardy including her own dog!...🦋

I hate hearing things like this, but am so glad you and Honey are ok,although I'm sure Honey was mentally traumatized for awhile afterwards.
I rescue pit bulls and have 2 AMAZING ones right now. As well as a Doberman. Irresponsible HUMANS who don't properly train these types of dogs not only put others lives in danger, but the dog itself is also a victim. These people, and their negligence also give breeds like pit bulls a bad name, causing people to despise ALL pit bulls, which is sad. Well trained they are incredible dogs.....the clowns of dog world lol.
When I first got my one pit,she was scared, poorly trained, and traumatized by starvation and abuse. She attacked my other pit bull who reacted much like your Honey. I also ended up with a broken finger, cracked ribs, and cuts and bruises(and a little PTSD I think) from trying to save my dogs life,,which i did. She had a few puncture wounds on her neck and face. I chose to keep this rescue anyway, worked with her diligently,,and now,4 years later she's one of the best dogs I've ever had. I'm VERY aware of her strength and power tho,and always am cautious when my grand children are around,or even around feeding time.

My young grandchild would call that pittie owner a “lady with a dark heart” because of the cruelty she demonstrates to, with, and through her poor dog. From what you’ve shared she encourages her dog to cause harm and imho she should have been charged with animal cruelty, spent some time in jail with probation to include counseling and the dog needs to be removed from her - it is possible he could be rehabilitated but that have be a decision made by an expert. Accountability is greater than money though I’m glad she was ordered to your bills and sorry you and your Honey plus the children were undoubtedly traumatized emotionally as well.
As the Dog Whisperer says “It’s not bad dogs, it’s bad owners.”
I agree with that yet would also extend the issues to puppy mills and irresponsible breeders, including
in-breeding which causes harm to the genetic pool.
