Dealing with dieback/scorching in Japanese maples

  • Acers, garden planted and those in pots, like dappled shade and don't do well in full or partial sun. The new leaves often can be scorched and you risk dieback, the same applies if they are short of water.
Cutting back the dieback quickly will allow the plant to hopefully recover and regrow.

Many of the leaves on mine got very crispy this last week too, but I don't see actual die back ... YET. I have my fingers crossed. I think I will have to move it to a shadier spot this Fall.

@michelleduncan9965 my JM has been in the same spot for over 20 years. I think it was all the warm winds ,I might make a portable blind for mine

I think these Japanese Maples are tough to grow in southern Colorado where it's quite dry & super hot in summer & fairly cold in the winter. I hope this JM (that was so carefully & pains-takingly planted in May) will live through whatever happened, or is still happening to it. I think it's in way too sunny of an area. On each affected leaf - only part of the leaf looks burned & a light crisy tan, so I guess that's "leaf scortch." If this one has a lot of die back, we won't try

Ahhh OK you just answered my question, I love them but am a bit nervous about getting more, I bought one that was expensive 30 odd years ago n it died the 1st winter, I never knew why.. so now I'm doing a bit of research, I want them for bonsai cuttings, I had 2 from that tree 30 years ago but sold the bonsai after 20 years, I had a huge clear out..kinda sorry I didn't keep at least one..

The cause of dieback must be correctly diagnosed; In Japanese maples, some cases may be due to dehydration, but in many others, it is due to bacteria / fungus ... in those cases, the problem is not solved by just pruning.
