Bro both phones will do fine after extreme cold as they regain room temperature. And by the way cold makes stuff shrink not expand and also makes semi conductors non conductive that's why both systems didn't boot at first and were slow after booting.

If you're willing to spend more you could wait for the 10th anniversary Edition of the iPhone ( if it's as good as rumours say ) or you just resell your device you might buy now and then buy the iPhone X.
Personally I would say if you like a better Screen go for the S8. Oled and especially that resolution is a huge difference. Android is more customizeable and iOS is more simple and faster I would say. If you're planning to buy a iPhone at least get the Plus Model. Just everything better. :)

Acctually the back part of the phone didn't expand. When something gets colder it starts to get smaller and the only reason it came off would be because whatever holding it together got so cold that it snapped off of the back part.
