    Don't stress! You got this! I always ask my self o.k what's the worst that can happen? When I tell my self different different options or things that can happen, its all good!

    • @AmandaRoundtheGlobe
      @AmandaRoundtheGlobe  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes exactly! The absolute worst that can happen is that I go into debt and/or go home. Going home would be worse to me as I can only get the work visa for Australia once, I can't reapply if I leave. I think I will be able to find a job relatively soon though and it will all work out! Thank you, that really helps ☺️☺️

    Hi Being an Aussie also means supporting AFL footy and choosing a team, the season doesn't start until early next year. So that gives you plenty of time to learn all about it, check the video AFL explained.Good luck finding employment.

    Would be cool to see your neighborhood, the stores like when you walk through the grocery store (supermarket), some of the nature if you go on any day trips or the view from your place. Good luck on the job hunt, i've been searching for one since april.

    Hey Amanda...welcome to Aus! I'm excited that you're here even though we're in different states! Try not to stress too much. You're doing such a brave thing, and while it seems crazy now, in the future it will be a great story. You know, like, "When I landed in Australia I didn't have two coins to rub together and had no idea where my next meal was coming from..." Haha bit of an exaggeration but you get what I mean!

    hey....i was wondering when you were in melbourne was it crap weather or did the sun actually shine regularly.....we are wanting to move there but the sun is a factor for us as now we live in sweden where the sun dont shine in winter basically at all.

    • @brettrickards
      @brettrickards 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Winter is the season i ask mainly about. Is it mostly dark n dreary or can u actually enjoy outdoors n a bit of sun .......1 or 2 days here a fortnight of sun.....but 0 or below is the max.

      Suburbs then to avoid?
      Tarniet is that safe there?
      These somali gangs where should we live to be well away from them?
      Budget is $400000 for house.

    "Grocery store" is clearly understood by Australians. Just ask for the Supermarket, or Woolies or Coles.

  • @johnnyhshify
    @johnnyhshify 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    How much money should you bring to Melbourne? Any decent studio costs $400 pw plus bonds $3200 upfront. having enough for 2 months is just insane.

    • @AmandaRoundtheGlobe
      @AmandaRoundtheGlobe  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I rented rooms instead of entire apartments. A cheap room for rent is usually $200 per week, sometimes you can find them without bond, or bond will be 1 month rent. The Australian gov recommends that you bring $5k AUD with you when you're coming to Australia

    Welcome to Aus! Melbourne is so awesome, or 'mel-bun' as you correctly say haha. Next to work on is 'oz-tralia' rather than 'Aws-tralia', or if you want to be true Aussie then just stick with 'straya' Lol. And Americans always say 'awwssie' when it's more like 'ozzie'. Hope that makes sense, so hard to explain via type lol.
    There are also things which are just unique to Melbourne, like turning right from the far left hand lane (to allow for the trams) and the cross walk sound is diff to Sydney. Also what we would call a 'middy' sized drink is called a 'pot' in Melbourne.
    Looking forward to seeing more observations. And really, you don't have switches on your power points in the US? Weird.

    Don't try to blend in too much. Being American is to your advantage as long as you are not an ugly loud American. Australian expect Americans to use different terms etc and be different

    Hope you get a job soon! I hosted a couchsurfer that told me she stayed for a summer on a farm for "free" but she had to commit to work on farming stuff for a few hours a day. She used a site like www.workaway.info. Have you checked that option?
    I started watching your adventures a few days ago and now I want to visit Thailand! :P

    Welcome to Victoria (since i'm technically not in Melbourne but i'm only 1hr out from the CBD)! Good luck on the work front. Maybe look at office temping as well as the cafe thing to access more options at least if only temporary while you look for something more permanent. Also charities are always looking for people to sign up donors on street corners (it woudl be a horrible job, but again maybe it woudl be ok temporarily) - they are always advertising for people on places like seek.com.au (which i'm guessing you have already found - if not check that website out).
    I'm not sure why anyone would would think it was funny you saying grocery store - that is what i call it to? Also supermarket - both is normal here from my perspective. You you could also just say the name of the specific company you are going to (Woolworths, Coles etc) . Just a suggestion - It is probably going to be better if you just don't say 'mate'. You might think it is helping you fit in, but from the perspective of an Australian woman when people from other countries (especially women and especially if you try and put an Aussie accent on it while saying it, and especially Americans because we know you get our crocodile hunter type shows there) use that word it seems like you are making fun of it because it is really a stereotype. From my perspective it is a word that mainly men use to refer to other male friends here, and some women use it also but normally those that want to make a point that they are like the men. In order to not give the wrong impression (because honestly it has never crossed my mind that a traveller just did it to try and fit in rather than make fun (sorry to say - i've personally been educated by this too), so i'm sure some other people might made that mistake too), it is probably better just not to say it at all. You won't not fit in if you don't say mate if you know what i'm saying. It is more unusual for a woman to use that word than not.
    Anyway sorry if that makes it seem even more complicated. Nobody would expect you to seem Australian when you are not! And i'd doubt anyone would not understand anything you say - we get so much US television/youtube etc and your accent is really easy to understand. Anyway I'm really interested to hear you perspective on Australian culture as, as someone with an anthropology background i love this kind of stuff from an outside perspective. Good luck x

    The Docklands up-market Highrise apartments overlooking South Bank, are usually good value..Often heaps of Female uni students, expats etc. to share with, and often costs $100/150 p/w...If you're really hard up & stressed, get too know the Yachties in the various Marinas, as you often can live better on Board a big cruising yacht, plus good quality facilties, & 24/7 security, all in the Heart of the City, eg. "Yarras Edge"..I know, 'cause I live aboard, and sail from marina too marina...We live in a different World, and know each other via Yacht Clubs, [fo me MYC.] but just google all the major Clubs, & I garantee, you'll be invited out in their social races [see my fb, justin james squire], as we just got back from Melbourne..And you'll be surprised of the oppertunities in the live-aboard community..
