With PEEP levels, are we possibly concerned about hyperinflation and lessen ability exhale? I see that PEEP creates more alveolar recruitment but does this hyperinflation cause a concern for the exhalation phase? What conditions would this benefit the most? COPD? Would pulmonary edema be beneficial for this? Would this cause more fluid to rush into the alveolar and cause them to collapse more?
Hey Matt...PEEP is used for patients who have shunt physiology including pneumonia, pulmonary edema, blood in the airways...this video simply shows how PEEP helps recruit alveoli. This is not a strategy I would use in COPD/Asthma...these patients have an obstructive issue and need lower tidal volumes, lower respiratory rates, increased I:E ratios. Hope that helps.
