Unfortunately the "opera dictatorship" and a silly statement of Verdi about Italian vocal music primacy threw shadow and obscurity onto romantic and postromantic Italian instrumental music.Obviously we can't compete with German area in instrumental music of xix and xx century but we've quite some good music whose knowledge is worth. Sgambati is one. And he was very prolific too.
The composer has good talent. Romantic harmonies for prelude and fugue is absolutely fine. However, the “epic” character of the piece was filled with some discursive materials and therefore sounded a little rambling. Put it simply, it could be more concisely written. The composer could have done all 24 keys in the manner of J. S. Bach.
