Great respect for an artisan who had to relearn the instrument after recovering from a brain affliction; having lost all memory of the guitar and how its played. Thanks to TH-cam his gift lives. RIP Pat Martino. The only guitarist that got George Benson's attention in a NY pub.
Guitarists! Here’s an intro to Martino’s: - SYMMETRICAL PARENTAL FORMS - There are 2: the 3-note AUGMENTED TRIAD; and the 4-note DIMINISHED CHORD. - 1: Use the easy-to-grab AUGMENTED TRIAD (1-3-#5) to easily form/parent 6 OTHER CHORDS (3 major and 3 minor triads. Ex: On the GBE fret 554 for Caug or C+. Move any of those notes DOWN 1 FRET, and you’ll “parent” 3 major triads (E-G#, and C). Instead move any one of those notes UP 1 FRET and you’ll “parent” 3 minor triads (C#m, Fm, and Am). So 1 “symmetrical” chord, named so because each note is a major 3rd away from the others, yields 6 other chords. - 2: For the 2nd “Symmetrical Parental Form”, on the DGBE fret 4545 for the “named-for-any-note-in-the-chord” 4-note DIMINISHED 7th chord (formula: 1-b3-b5-bb7). This easy-to-grab chord allows us to: FORM /PARENT 4 other DOMINANT 7th chords (formula: 1-3-5-b7); and they are …, “named for any note in the Dim7 chord BUT LOWERED BY ONE FRET.”. So, in this case, the original Dim7 notes are: F#, C, D# and Adim7; and so the 4 new, “parented” Dom7 chords are: F, B, D, and Ab7. Make sense? / This is like CAGED, level 10.- It is observable facts about how the guitar functions (tuned in 4ths with that one 3rd). If you made this idea of Martino’s yours, please let me know. - So much respect and admiration for Pat Martino, RIP … genius, master guitarist.
Always a pleasure to watch and listen to PAT MARTINO.... lovely tone, lovely expression, great lines and phrasing... SUPERB .. most sincerely , Tony Calabro'
Very attractive tune; I love his grooving approach .. riffing, vamping & the perfect blend of bop, blues & bossa. I did meet him briefly @ The Aoyama Blue Note way back 2005/6 .. commands an amazing presence .. gentle & engaging. I bet he’d b communing with Wes Montgomery & Grant Green “Up There”. A unique jazz gtr stylist.

In Pat Martino the world lost a great talent and legend.
