- The M10 tank destroyer was an American tank destroyer during WW2, it was officially called the 3-inch Gun Motor Carriage M10 and never Wolverine during the war.
It was armed with the 3-inch (76.2 mm) M7 gun on a modified Sherman tank chassis.
The M10 proved to be an excellent tank destroyer, but the open-topped turret left the crew vulnerable and a lot of crew were lost because of artillery fire, on the other hand the open-topped turret gave excellent visibility which was valuable to a tank destroyer and it also improved reload speed.
The M10 was only produced from 1942 until 1943 and approximately 6,406 were made.

My late Uncle George trained and served on every U.S. Army TD from the halftracks (which he despised), the Wolverine and the "Hellcat" (which he was less than fond of). He DID very much prefer/like the 90mm equipped "Jackson" which, according to statements he made in my presence, was the only real TD of WWII and had the 90mm that could in his words, "Absolutely wreck anything the Germans could throw at us.". I'm sure there were, and still are, WWII Vets/TD crewmen out there that would argue that point but George was not one to tell tall tales. One memory I have of my uncle was a photo, taken by a Combat Cameraman, during the Battle of the Bulge, of his Jackson engaging a Panther as both AFVs came out of a tree line and into a small clearing....Uncle George and his fellow crewmen survived that "gunfight"....The Panther and it's crewmen not so much.
I can't help but think I may have just saw my dad drive by as he was a driver in the M 10 in WW2.

My father praised the Tank Destroyer’s fire power in knocking out German pill boxes. Dad was awarded the Silver Star by order of General Patton for the Battle of Metz.
what made these great was that they were light, so the US could ship a bunch of these by boat. People often forget the limitations of transporting such heavy machines from the US back then.
The one at 8:21 hasn't had the white star on the side painted over. They seem to have been painted there as a convenient aiming point, as they're directly over the main gun ammunition storage. 75 years on, you still have to feel sorry for the poor guys who went into combat in these things after being told they were the hottest, toughest thing on the battlefield.
It was better than the Sherman 75 so it was an upgrade and it was fast

As I have knowns about 2world war this kind of tank destroyers weren't participating the attacks on north Africa dessert wars between Germany, Italy in one side and British, USA in other side but USA with M3Lee tank,Sherman tanks participating the war too nice video thanks

gun lock is in the back, so that would be standard for transport.

could have been a little more of the m10 firing than just a bunch of tepid music. that is what they were made for.
Actual combat footage is extremely rare and non existent.
I might say something dumb as not only because of it's open top as it was vulnerable to artillery fires but also it was almost completely unsuitable in built up areas especially in the final months of war the M10 was forced to pass trough the built areas...
That's why in late war footage you sometimes see the crew made steal cover on the turret. 👍 👍 👍

@John Beige not only but also young kids from the Hitlerjugend shooting down or as nearest possible with their Panzerfaust. I understood that the M10 avoided much as possible to fight in the cities and leaving the honor to the Shermans to clean up those places...

Looks like they made better infantry support guns than tank fighters.
There weren't that many German tanks to shoot at on the Western front in general. The gun was useful in reducing fortified positions.
pretty much every AFV was at one point or another pressed into a role it wasn't initially designed for (STuG units were often expected to function as tanks from 43-45) .
The 3 inch M7 HE shell had a similar blast radius to the US 105mm round making it a very good support weapon both in the direct fire and indirect fire role.
The 3 inch M7's AP round was a superb tank buster.
Wasn't really a great Infantry support vehicle, it didn't really fit that roll, but sone M10s would have a 12,7 mm with a great arc of fire.

The GI's who used these were very aware that they were not tanks but very mobile tracked vehicles that looked like tanks that mounted artillery capable of destroying enemy armor.
If a unit was lucky it was crewed with trained men. The US Army's method of operation in the drive across Northern Europe would often find tracked vehicles crewed by men not trained on those vehicles.
They learned to use what they had in a war of bushwhack and ambush while scared most of the time.
An almost completely mechanized army supported by the world's greatest logistical system. In retrospect.
