I was at both the Texas v Michagan and Texas v USC Rose Bowl games for the 2004 and 2005 seasons. This game was crazy, there was so much talent on both these teams that some future NFL players never made it on the field for this game. The vast majority of the players on the field eventually ended up in the NFL. 35 from USC, 27 from Texas-appeared in at least one NFL regular season game, while seven coaches went on to coach in the professional ranks. Fourteen players went on to be selected in the first round, and another 24 were picked in the second and third rounds.

2013 national championship between Auburn and Florida State. Probably the 2nd best BCS title game (and the last before the playoff) behind this one. Auburn was the team of destiny pulling off a few miracle wins just to get there and FSU was a juggernaut, blowing everyone they played that year off the field.
Ended up being a fantastic game with a crazy 4th quarter. Check it out!

The announcer was a man named Keith Jackson. He was a legendary figure in American sports broadcasting, especially college football.
Not only did he have the perfect voice/cadence/accent for the culture of college football, but he was especially gifted with turns of phrase when he called games.
I have many fond memories, listening to his description of the on-field action. Ask any American football fan over the age of 45 or 50 about Keith Jackson. I guarantee the first reaction will be a nostalgic smile.

One of the things that made this game even sweeter for Texas fans was the absolutely unbelievalble way a lot of the sports media press, especially ESPN, treated the teams before the game. They acted like it was a given that USC was going to win. ESPN even did a series of computered generated matchups between USC and the greatest college teams of the past. It was just crazy. Yes, USC was a great team, but TEXAS was also a great team and deserving of respect. This was the greatest college game I have ever se3n. The talent on the field that day was insane.

Not a high scoring game, but a use of strong route defense's, and and stellar offense conversion plays to trick each other teams defense. This is how a talented Texas quarter back; with help of a very good offensive coaching staff. Beat a changed Michigan defenses, though great excusion, that "forever" defended against a all player use of offense. Before the championship In the 2005 Rose Bowl, it was a hallmark for a out of the pocket quarterback playing largely in the pros in the years to follow.

Reggie Bush was one of the greatest college players in history. He averaged 8.7 yards per carry in this particular season. To put that in to perspective, league average at both the college and professional level is around 4.5 yards per carry. For whatever reason it didn't translate to the NFL but he had a decently long career with a couple of really good seasons.

Reggie Bush, the USC running back, was probably the biggest star in this game; obviously since this game was 17 years ago, his NFL career is done, but he's a big enough name to still be in commercials.
Vince Young, the Texas QB, was briefly a star, but not for long.
USC QB Matt Leinhart played in the NFL, but wasn't a star. He's now back in the college football world as a studio analyst for pre- and postgame shows.
Michael Huff, a safety for Texas, was also drafted highly in the following NFL draft, meaning four of the first ten picks in the 2006 NFL Draft played in this game.
Aaron Ross, Texas CB, was not drafted as highly as those four, but was a key part of the New York Giants' Super Bowl XLII and XLVI wins.
Texas safety Michael Griffin and running back Jamaal Charles were *not* drafted in 2006 as they were underclassmen, but after being drafted in 2007, both had long and fruitful NFL careers. Actually, upon further reflection, I think Charles, not Bush, was the biggest star in this game, and I completely forgot until looking at the game summary that he was even in it because most of the hype around Texas's offense _at the time_ centered around Vince Young.

USC was the better team, more complete, balanced, skilled, electrifying but they became complacent and careless once they went up and Texas made them pay. Really the story of the tortoise and the hare here. If this game was played 10 times USC would win 8 of them but they learned a hard lesson here. Overall, two all time great teams in the same season playing in the title game. Rarely does this happen in any sport.

There were lots of big-time prospects in this game, but most of them didn't find much success at the NFL level. The best player here in the pros ended up being Texas running back Jamaal Charles, who was an exciting and productive player for the Kansas City Chiefs. Some other players had modest success: Texas quarterback Vince Young had a couple of promising seasons in Tennessee, even leading them to the playoffs, but just couldn't figure out NFL defenses. Reggie Bush was picked second overall, and he was a good, versatile player, but the hype around him was as the next Barry Sanders and that never happened. He had his most successful seasons with Drew Brees in New Orleans and a couple of solid seasons in Detroit and Miami.

There was too many eventual pros that played in this game to name. Some are certified greatest college footballers of all time though, like Reggie Bush and Vince Young. Off the top of my head, I think Jamaal Charles (running back for Texas), Brian Orakpo (linebacker for Texas) or Clay Mathews (linebacker for USC) probably had the best careers in the NFL. Reggie Bush and Vince Young were both extremely hyped coming into the NFL but neither one quite reached the level of success they were expected to at the next level. Bush did end up having a pretty underrated career though.

USC was on a 34 game winning streak and got beat 👀 Nobody gave Texas a chance to win this game! Loaded teams on both sides as well with one of the best college players of all time Reggie Bush. This is the game that got me into college football as a kid! I recommend Michigan Vs App State (2007) for a future reaction!

Bush was a beast of an athlete...but I thought Lendale White was the better running back.
That USC offense was really spoiled for talent. Imagine having the Heisman winner NOT be the best running back on your team...they really were that good.

USC RB Reggie Bush 2nd pick 6 pro bowls 1 first team all pro
Texas QB Vince Young 3rd pick 2x pro bowl
Texas S Michael Huff 7th pick 1 2nd team all pro
USC QB Matt Leinart 10th pick 0 NFL awards
Those were the first rounders in NFL draft.
Next year had the much better crop.
If you want to see a pro college team, the greatest college football team ever was the 2001 Miami Hurricanes who produced 38 (17 first round) NFL draft picks, earned 43 pro bowl selections, 6 Super Bowl champions, only team with 4 future starting NFL RBs, the 4th string RB, Frank Gore, is now third all time in rushing yards in NFL with 16000.
They outscored opponents 512 to 117 and dominated every game they played in. They had arguably the two best safeties in NFL history on the same college team in Ed Reed (search him on TH-cam and you’ll never stop 😂) and Sean Taylor, who died tragically very young in a robbery gone wrong at his home while he read to his daughter.

USC had 2 straight Heisman winners in QB Matt Leinart and RB Reggie Bush. Bush gave up his Heisman trophy because it was revealed that he received improper benefits to attend USC. I want to say they gave him a car and got an apartment for his mother to live in, but idk exactly what. He’s regarded as one of the greatest running backs in college football history.

USC did not pay Reggie Bush to play football.
USC did not give Bush’s family a home in exchange for their son playing football for the Trojans.
USC did not buy Reggie Bush a car or give him money to purchase a car.
No USC booster or patron ever gave Bush or his family any money or other financial benefits.
Lloyd Lake, the person who provided a home for the Bush’s and a used car for Reggie Bush, was not a booster or even a fan of USC.
Lloyd Lake was an ex-convict who had delusions of becoming a sports agent. When he left prison, he realized that a friend of his, Reggie Bush’s stepfather, LaMar Griffin, had a stepson, Reggie Bush, who was gaining fame playing college football.
Lake provided Griffin a home as well as other benefits in return for his stepson, Reggie Bush, signing with Lake’s fledgling sports agency when he decided to play in the NFL. This was taken from bleacher report.

USC actually wound up having to forfeit this entire season retroactively. It was found Reggie Bush had been receiving large value gifts, which was against NCAA rules at the times. His Heisman trophy is now officially listed as vacated.
Also Pete Carrol the head coach of USC went on to have a successful NFL career. He's now the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks and has a Super Bowl win. Should probably be two Super Bowl wins if not for one for one of the worst play calls in history.
