  • A quick demo of a sketchbook session working from travel photography. I do these images on site and in the studio. The studio work is usually a study for a larger piece.
    Thanks for watching

Really like your style - thanks for sharing. When I get in a rut and loose confidence I like to watch others paint and it gives me the inspiration needed to carry on again. Your video's give me inspiration to paint again. Thanks.

I'm using a Stillman and Birn sketchbook here which is very different from traditional watercolor papers in both weight and sizing. Here I am encouraging my paper to buckle and create cauliflowers although they are somewhat controlled. I might suggest working in a sketchbook for a couple of reasons.
    1. A sketchbook is more forgiving for the type of pen and wash images you are trying to create.
    2. The set up time and "need to succeed" are lowered greatly so you tend to loosen up.

Why oh why did I find you right at bedtime?! Now I want to stay up and watch every one of your videos. I've been searching for something to help me learn how to use water colour in a way that would compliment my sketches, but all I could find was landscape stuff. I learned so much just from this video! Your artwork is amazing. I literally got happy goose bumps watching it. And your art journal is beautiful.
    Peace & Love. :)

My pleasure. I'm working on a few more and will probably start to incorporate instruction in the next few. I use a Sanford Draughting (314) a fairly soft lead that can create light or dark lines depending on how much pressure you use. I actually do paint on both sides of the paper at times. It really just depends on whether I've got a wet painting on the opposite page or not when I'm doing them. Thanks. is

Hehe. My background is in architecture and we did a lot of drawing. Finding actual jobs that allow you to do that is tough nowadays. Choose how you might want to pursue this professionally and take deliberate steps toward that goal. Work at your craft as much as you can and don't forget the marketing side- promote your work and set realistic goals. It doesn't happen overnight, but you may find that you can shift how you make your living eventually.

Thank you. I am an architectural illustrator so I've got a bit of a head start there. The lack of demonstration probably equates to the small numbers of people who continue to work in the traditional way. I teach rendering at the collegiate level and I know of only a couple other places in the country that do as well. It's a shame as watercolor is so perfectly suited to rendering architectural subjects.

thanks so much for this demonstration using watercolor. I paint in watercolor and wonder when you sketch, I think you used a softer or wider pencil, can you tell me what kind and hardness you use? thanks also for showing your sketch book. I see you only paint on one side. I have not done that but will try in. We just returned from a trip to Italy and see a number of your paintings of sights we saw and took photos of for future paintings.

Iain your sketch book was interesting if not more than the painting you were doing! That is not to say I did not enjoy your painting process, but I don’t use my sketch book for painting only sketching my composition and value thumbnails. So the question is : Is your sketch book a book of watercolour paper or just thick paper ?
