Back in the day this was the first cassette tape that I bought, I was 16, semi depressed and still trying to figure things out, this got me through some difficult times and gave me hope. I am 37 now, have a family two wonderful kids and a wife but this still takes me back to my boyhood room, that table and chair set by the window and for a moment I can feel the breeze in my hair again. You eventually get through it, the seemingly unbearable pain the feeling of despair, nothing lasts for ever.

Hey Dido. Gotta thank you for being a part of my recovery from bowel cancer. Every morning when I had radiation therapy, I listened to your song "Stoned" Absolutely brilliant because it had a long intro, and while the drum beat was going on to start with it, obviously no words, so I created my own....."The cancer in my body's disappearing disappearing. Wow. This song came right back into my life at the exact time I needed it to. This song is about not being able to commit to someone or love itself. Always thinking “is there more? Can I do better?” Not being able to commit to a person and settle down and find peace, happiness and be content with the blessings you have. Shielding your heart. Letting people rent out your heart and letting them just come, use you and leave because you can’t commit to the relationship.
growing up as an African kid I listened to dido, I played her songs on repeat all day everyday. In a world of afrobeats and afropop and reggae music this was quite odd. This song got me through the time when I had kind of a crush on my professor. Not really a crush but he was such a man. The way he talked or presented himself in the class was saying he IS a man. And my father left me and my mom for another life in a different country. So as a teenager I've never had this role model of a man. And my professor was the first guy I recognised as a man. He was in his early 30s I think and married. It was more of platonic love. And this song was a boomer those days. And I had a cassette with it . I remember studying to this song or just listening and thinking one day I'll meet my man I'll be happy with. The one who will be exactly like my professor with manly attitude. Still haven't met this guy. But thank you Dido for your songs. I bet you helped a lot of people to get through rough times.
True story: This song changed my life. Spent my entire adult life working around the world. In 2004 I'd already spent 3 months in Indonesia, headed for home via Australia and had to stay there for a month and then had to go to Malaysia. Was at a record shop and picked up Dido's new (at that time) album. Listened to this track on my laptop in my hotel room and I realised that I WAS allowing my life to be for rent. We (mostly) all need a job but I realised that I'd reached a point where my life was something that was happening on the other side of the world while I was away earning money. I enjoyed my old life, and cherish the friends I made, but my LIFE was at home with my family and I was renting out my life instead of living it. Took a couple more years but I found myself a normal job and settled into a happy family life.

10 years ago, this song spoke to me as it still does today. This year, I lay anchor and settle for the best in me and of the worst in me as this song has gave me the lens a view into an unplanned life of ever floating, ever exploring but never finding home. It’s time we all commit to change, to root so that we can grow, strengthen and blossom into the people we’re born to be. Thank you Dido.
This is for people like us that enjoys ageless music on TH-cam and read others wonderful comments. Loads of Love from Nigeria. Wonderful song that touches the soul of even a new born. ❤️❤️
As a Malawian, I’m grateful for technology and globalization, which introduced me to incredible artists like Dido. Her lyrics and soothing melodies offer a unique perspective on life. In a closed-off world, I might have missed the beauty of her music.
In an era of big vocals, and melodramatic music videos, I'm glad these tender and melancholic sounds were given a chance. Else, I would never have had the chance to truly appreciate them today. Now that I am old enough to understand such spiritual artists- Dido, Sade, Indiana Arie.... and others like them.
For those who love this Song : I haven't ever really found a place that I call home I never stick around quite long enough to make it I apologize once again I'm not in love But it's not as if I mind that your heart ain't exactly breaking It's just a thought, only a thought But if my life is for rent and I don't learn to buy Well I deserve nothing more than I get Cos nothing I have is truly mine I've always thought that I would love to live by the sea To travel the world alone and live more simply I have no idea what's happened to that dream Cos there's really nothing left here to stop me It's just a thought, only a thought But if my life is for rent and I don't learn to buy Well I deserve nothing more than I get Cos nothing I have is truly mine If my life is for rent and I don't learn to buy Well I deserve nothing more than I get Cos nothing I have is truly mine While my heart is a shield and I won't let it down While I am so afraid to fail so I won't even try Well how can I say I'm alive If my life is for rent and I don't learn to buy Well I deserve nothing more than I get Cos nothing I have is truly mine If my life is for rent and I don't learn to buy Well I deserve nothing more than I get Cos nothing I have is truly mine Cos nothing I have is truly mine Cos nothing I have is truly mine Cos nothing I have is truly mine
This is the beauty of old songs. They bring back memories of you past life when things were different, and a constant reminder that life keeps ticking on. Our generation is destined to be the only one that will truly appreciate songs of that era, just as our fathers and grandfathers before us. Enjoy your life people!

Yeah, it is hard to get older, it really is - but I guess on the other hand, it is also a blessing, so that you are capable of going down memory lane and enjoy the good old days once again with all the great music from the era, where you were young :)
'Nothing i have is truly mine' that part! Oh how i love this song as a kid not even knowing what it meant lol😂. Now it makes so much sense after experiencing how tough life can be. Thankyou Dido for this beautiful song❤
Y’all think about the message: “if my life is for rent and I don’t learn to buy, then I deserve what I get, because nothing is truly mine.” This is a song speaking about the emptiness of just hooking up. It is speaking about how important commitment is in relationships. This could never come out today. This is SO GOOD.
MASTERPIECE ! In my opinion her best and most meaningful song. Beautiful, thoughtful, sincere and also philosophical : we all have our lives for rent , therefore we should learn to buy in time before it will be too late. Dido's art is real class and also she looks very classy - even this video is great. A timeless song indeed!
When you feel you don't know what's your ground or who to truly believe, sometimes you feel you'd carry on alone with everything wrong in your life, there are bad days like these and probably Dido wanted to show these uncertainty and doubts on this beautiful song.
I'm still here! This song is very spiritual and only people in the spirit can understand this music, God bless you Dido. And to God almighty be all the glory all the time. 💙
As a kid I listened to all of dido's songs with my mom as she was her favorite artist. She's committed suicide when I was 10 but I still feel really connected to her through this music and lyrics
Never say committed.... It's died by suicide. Saying committed makes it sound like a crime, but your mother committed no crime. She died by suicide, and that's unfortunate. Overwhelmed by circumstances beyond her control. I hope you, and others in similar situations can see the difference. I'm sure your mother would appreciate it.
I've always loved this song since I heard it on Pandora. It breaks my heart everytime I hear it because it reminds me of one of ex-gf that was with me for 5 years. She was here to study for her Master's degree and about 1.5 yr after she got it, she left me to got home to China for her parents. All along her life was for rent: None of her 3 apartments when she was here was there furniture in the living room (even though she had room-mates). She was living with 1 foot out the door. I cry inside when I think about her. She was supposed to be the one I grow old with
I'm crying while listening to this beautiful song after loosing my lovely mother few months ago due to financial situation I wish God can touch someone here to give me a little help so I can forward my academies career.

For those who love this Song :
I haven't ever really found a place that I call home
I never stick around quite long enough to make it
I apologize once again I'm not in love
But it's not as if I mind
that your heart ain't exactly breaking
It's just a thought, only a thought
But if my life is for rent and I don't learn to buy
Well I deserve nothing more than I get
Cos nothing I have is truly mine
I've always thought
that I would love to live by the sea
To travel the world alone
and live more simply
I have no idea what's happened to that dream
Cos there's really nothing left here to stop me
It's just a thought, only a thought
But if my life is for rent and I don't learn to buy
Well I deserve nothing more than I get
Cos nothing I have is truly mine
If my life is for rent and I don't learn to buy
Well I deserve nothing more than I get
Cos nothing I have is truly mine
While my heart is a shield and I won't let it down
While I am so afraid to fail so I won't even try
Well how can I say I'm alive
If my life is for rent and I don't learn to buy
Well I deserve nothing more than I get
Cos nothing I have is truly mine
If my life is for rent and I don't learn to buy
Well I deserve nothing more than I get
Cos nothing I have is truly mine
Cos nothing I have is truly mine
Cos nothing I have is truly mine
Cos nothing I have is truly mine
Great
Thank you for your time dear
well done

I love this song then I still love it now.
This is the beauty of old songs. They bring back memories of you past life when things were different, and a constant reminder that life keeps ticking on. Our generation is destined to be the only one that will truly appreciate songs of that era, just as our fathers and grandfathers before us. Enjoy your life people!

As a black man I’m ashamed to say this is my favourite song of all time. I will never tell my homies 😂😂😂😂😂😂 they will think I’m weak
You will be shocked to find out they love it too. Aren't Homies meant to accept you the way you are anyway?

Yeah, it is hard to get older, it really is - but I guess on the other hand, it is also a blessing, so that you are capable of going down memory lane and enjoy the good old days once again with all the great music from the era, where you were young :)

'Nothing i have is truly mine' that part! Oh how i love this song as a kid not even knowing what it meant lol😂. Now it makes so much sense after experiencing how tough life can be. Thankyou Dido for this beautiful song❤
Her Vocals are simply Sensational, your music world is not complete untill you have Dido in it. Congratulations from New Zealand 🇳🇿 👏 ❤️ Jan 7th 2023.
This girl is just so talented.
Her voice be haunting my spirit
One of the Greatest Artist of All Time!
This song has been my ringtone for the past 7 years. I just love it. Life is indeed for rent and nothing we have is truly ours
The lyrics to this song must be one of the most beautiful and sad ever written
Am here submitting my thoughts and sharing the warmth thanks to her dynamic energy, what an enduring masterpiece......
This is one of the most honest songs ever!
true
It's October 2022 and I'm still listening to my favorite song of all times

20 years have passed and Life for Rent is still my favourite record in the whole wide world! 💜
What a musical masterpiece ❤
Her voice is priceless, her music is medicine for the soul. Who's here 2020?
I always listen Dido's songs: real ART gets never old !
Lol I think we should all start a group
9th June 2021 you mean
MASTERPIECE ! In my opinion her best and most meaningful song. Beautiful, thoughtful, sincere and also philosophical : we all have our lives for rent , therefore we should learn to buy in time before it will be too late. Dido's art is real class and also she looks very classy - even this video is great. A timeless song indeed!
yes still listning to this song and feel like she s talking about me,
+Koki Heoui : The same happens to me ! Dido is great : not only a singer but also a psychologist and a philosopher
marco brenni I totally agree! I think exactly the same as you!
+Mara: I'm happy to hear this; thanks
When you feel you don't know what's your ground or who to truly believe, sometimes you feel you'd carry on alone with everything wrong in your life, there are bad days like these and probably Dido wanted to show these uncertainty and doubts on this beautiful song.
Such an amazing song, love it!
I'm still here! This song is very spiritual and only people in the spirit can understand this music, God bless you Dido. And to God almighty be all the glory all the time. 💙
no little cult person .....just no😞
You know what these people are into right. Let's just say it has very little to do with God and more with the other guy.
It's not just a song but a reality of each and every individual human being born in this world..
Old music is truly beautiful; it lacks the busyness and modern rhythms, making it soothing.
This song never gets old I used to listen to this song when I was in primary school every afternoon I cried alone at home with an empty stomach
😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
As a kid I listened to all of dido's songs with my mom as she was her favorite artist. She's committed suicide when I was 10 but I still feel really connected to her through this music and lyrics
She shouldn’t have I feel like I know her. Am so sorry😭😭😭may her soul Rest In Peace
Am so so much sorry as well I feel for u were u from can I know u please
@@chishysapi2786 am Esther from Accra Ghana 🇬🇭 you’re welcome
Never say committed.... It's died by suicide.
Saying committed makes it sound like a crime, but your mother committed no crime.
She died by suicide, and that's unfortunate. Overwhelmed by circumstances beyond her control.
I hope you, and others in similar situations can see the difference. I'm sure your mother would appreciate it.

“I have no idea what’s happened to that dream as there’s really nothing left here to stop me” deep meaning
For sure
it's not a 'deep meaning' if it's so straightforward lol
Does it mean I dnt have to give up on my dreams…from where I stand now…. I’m just scared to fail if I should chase it😢😢😢😢
Anyone in 2024??? It's so nostalgic!!✨✨❤️
a very haunting melody. the lyrics are so profound and deep. love this song.

She was supposed to be the one I grow old with
Then go get her back, my friend!☺
