The thing that I enjoy the most about Tool is how, if you're younger than the band members, you get their lyrics and message better as years pass and you get more experience... They share a lot of very mature messages and emotions I'm fear inoculum, it only gets better with time! 👌🏿🤟🏿
Love watching John's covers, as far as i know you're the first to post a reaction to one. His dissection of Rosetta Stoned should be required viewing for any serious drum student. Enjoy your trip down the Tool rabbit hole, Danny has a ton of surprises up his sleeve. Since you've heard the latest album, go back and check out the 10000 Days album next and work your way back. Thanks for posting!
Automatic like for bringing up Invincible first, my favorite song on the album. Welcome aboard, you have decades of new music for you to listen to, enjoy it.
Yeah i agree, Rosetta Stoned by Jon is a must. Love to see somebody react to these videos, and you're a really cool dude! Cheers man and hope for more Tool drum cams.
You should definetely check out John's Rosetta Stoned cover and the follow-up "making of" video he made, explaining just how long and complex process it was to break this song down and learn to play it. Usually drum covers are not my cup of tea but John is the exception. In my opinion he doesn't have Danny's dynamics (being a 6,5 feet tall monster does it's work there ;) ) but still he delivers the closest experience possible to the original. BTW. You deserve a lot more subs than you have. Very good insights! A matter of time if you ask me.
Check out old Tool, Danny has been killing it since the 90's. The climax of the Grudge is my favorite piece of drumming ever, literally an eargasm every time.
100% Agree!!! I'm actually DYING from laughter!! I just came off from watching Mr. Zypher react to the God of Drumming himself on Pneuma, and I had a quick little inkling of a thought when he said, "Oh, I'm not a TOOL fan, I've never been a TOOL fan, etc. etc..." I thought, "I bet you you will be now!!" Quick check on Zypher's video feed, I see another TOOL reaction, and barely a minute into this video and he says he hasn't stopped listening to Fear Inoculum!! HAHAHAAAHHAAHA!!!! One word: YEP!! Can't really say I told you so, but I did THINK you so!!! LOL Welcome to The Army!! For real though @ZypherDrums -- you NEED to start your journey down the rabbit hole at the beginning!! Give TOOL another try--you're already doing that, but honestly, go back to their previous masterpieces and start back there... You are proof in the pudding to me that I have yet to find someone who actually LISTENS to this incredible band and fully does not like them, even in your case where you have said that you weren't even partial to any of their previous works. You're actually actively giving them your full attention, and "[you[ haven't been able to stop listening to them!" If you want an amazing iteration of Danny Carey, from one drummer to another, my good sir, I recommend Rosetta Stoned. JohnKew actually did a drum cover and MORE IMPORTANTLY a drom DECONSTRUCTION video about his learning process and about the insane intricacies inherent within Danny's drumming. Listen to the song first--to fully get the full effect, start with "Lipan Conjuring," then "Lost Keys (Blame Hofman)," and finally to "Rosetta Stoned." Here's a link to the "10,000 Days" playlist on TH-cam, that way you can go without interruption from one track to the next as they fade into each other: th-cam.com/play/OLAK5uy_l7KrE4YuWhZsfCdXlLJERHyk4YlwydukA.html Then check out the deconstruction vid that JohnKew put out--it's nothing short of AMAZING! Both what John (whose full name is John Williams BTW) did and the work he put into deciphering Danny's sublime drumming, from dynamics, to time signatures, to polyrhythms, etc., as well as fully being able to see the true genius behind Danny's drumming in fully stark, no-longer-foggy way. Here's that vid: th-cam.com/video/5EtB4kXzNmE/w-d-xo.html Finally, now, after having amassed this wealth of knowledge and discovering some of the more particular nuances within the track, watch John's cover, and you'll pick up on so many little things that went right over your head upon your first listen... It's truly a mind-boggling experience man! Here's that vid: th-cam.com/video/kwFI1-rjEuM/w-d-xo.html Take care, and again, welcome the The Army. SPIRAL OUT!
Great reaction video. I first found your channel a few weeks ago when you did Pneuma. I enjoyed that a lot, and this one even more. Regrettably, I am not a musician, but your reactions are still relatable. JohnKew is also an incredible talent, and I'll be watching more of his videos. I think I like Tool so much because they bring several things together at once: multiple layers of complexity, incredible talent, and still very "listen-able". Tool songs evolve the more I listen to them, and I find that I rarely grow tired of their songs even after many listenings.
Dude, I just finished watching your two Tool reaction videos and wished you had more. I subscribed as a result so I hope to see future Tool reaction videos.
I got addicted to John's covers of tool last year. Does it hurt to know he's self taught?? Good reaction with knowledge. Interesting to know you didn't like tool before. Shame but we all learn and see the light eventually. Enjoy...
Invincible is the best song on Fear Inoculum and top 5 Tool songs ever. The 7/3 polyrhythm all over the song is so cool. There are more complicated polyrhythms around, but this one is just so damn cool.
since you found John Kew you should definetely check his Rosetta Stoned cover (more Tool).. he has a full breakdown on his channel as well on exactly how ridiculously hard the song is to learn to play, and his process on figuring it out.
For me Danny is the most musical drummer out there, he writes lines and melodies on the whole kit that are more than time keeping groove mechanisms. when you shouted "Oh ymy god! 4/4" it was still in 7!
I was pretty indifferent to Tool until my mid 20s or so. My friends were obsessed but I was a late bloomer. Now I love them and Fear Innoculum is a fantastic album.
I'm really enjoying your Tool reviews. Last year Fear Inoculum was my most listened to group of songs according to Spotify. I came to Tool very late, but am making up for it. If I'm trying to turn someone on to Tool, Fear Inoculum is the first album I recommend, and I usually recommend people to in reverse order of their release. Being in my fifties, Invincible has a very powerful meaning to me... Trying to keep up youthful pursuits despite being on the wrong side of life. Is my favorite on the album. Great job, and enjoy the rabbit hole.
My favourite album and second favourite song of all time (Reflection tops it for me). Man, at 19 TOOL melted my brain, and I've stuck with them ever since (18 years or so)
I love how he uses the hi-hat only at the climax of the first build up. I really need to finally sit down and listen to the bloody album. I have had it in my Spotify Library for ages, like all the other Tool Albums. But I just can't find the right spot to just sit down and do nothing but listening to it. And I don't want to waste this as background music.
The tonality you're mentioning and how so much other stuff now sounds "the same" is down to compressing the sounds, using software instruments, etc. Also muffling of the drums. Carey has a custom crazy kit with amazing shells and they spend a ton of time getting it tuned to sound exactly how it should, and the result is each drum/cymbal/pad shines.
Love these Tool videos. You should really check out the album that defined them "Lateralus", and more specifically the songs Parabola and Lateralus, probably their most popular songs (well that and schism). I'd love to see ya do a video on those.
So excited that you came around to Tool. You’re not the first drummer to walk into Pneuma dubiously and come out a fan. Great call on invincible being the gateway tune on this album. The high hat work is underrated, too, I agree. Search for metal drummer reacting to pneuma, you’ll enjoy his reaction. Similar journey to you. This cover is incredible, too.
Great reaction, John is brilliant by the way, but in relation to Tool, I am 45 years old, seen them when I was 16/17 and could not appreciate them but in the last 15 years they are one of my favourite all time bands. Keep up the good work, your videos are so watchable and to the layman they make sense.
Try "Ticks and Leeches" from their Laterlaus album, its a more metal style as opposed to most of Fear Inoculum but with the same interesting drumming factor
I’d LOVE to see someone cover Danny’s playing. Can it be done? I’ve seen these super young guitar virtuosos, but NEVER a drummer like Danny. Incredible! 😎✌🏼❤️
Love the reaction. I highly suggest that you checkout Jinjer's drummer, Vladislav Ulasevich. Honestly, any live video they have. There are several drum cam videos that are on TH-cam as well. I really like Perennial Live drum playthrough and Ape official playthrough. Although, if you check out any of there live recordings you will be able to appreciate how technical and CLEAN he is.
I love Kai's style of play: Smashing through the front door, flinging ALL the metal pots and china down the stairs, stomping the pieces into the basement cement. Launching all the furniture out of the windows. All in good fun. But THIS...THIS is a large, hungry DANGEROUS animal, STALKING through the bush with MONSTROUS patience and anticipation. This is percussion to go T. Rex hunting with. Thank you for this. This channel is my first exposure to Tool.
It’s more like 7/6 time. He combines the triplets with a quad to give an extra beat. He switches flawlessly between digs. No one has EVER done it like Carey. 😎✌🏼❤️ At times it’s 5/4 too. Amazing! 😜✌🏼 And yes, even 4/4. Wow! 😎✌🏼
You mention Tom usage and building a track. Though different styles in a sense his usage reminds me of the whole Bonzo & Page conversations between guitar and drums. Epic. Non-normal and fun to listen too. Your thoughts?
Ya dude, you should listen to him 1) breakdown Rosetta Stone, and then watch him play it, “note perfect!” He’s pretty impressive and his drumming improved from his play of Rosetta Stone.
If you go back in reverse order of their album releases, you go from this to an arguably harder sound. I like to turn the bass to 11 and listen to 'Prison Sex' from the Undertow album.
Hearing you say that you started playing at 13, you really ought to watch the O'Keefe Music Foundation cover of "46 and 2." Listen to a bunch of teens and pre-teens make a Tool song their own, including a 13 year old on drums.
If it's just drums that you want to focus on, check this masterpiece. th-cam.com/video/eipToWdmHCQ/w-d-xo.html. This is a guy covering Tool's Rosetta Stoned. Prepare to be blown away with this one. This is what many consider to be Tool's best ever track. The intricacy on this track is unparalleled. Promise you that you will love this one!
Hey dude, you must be familiar with him but, react to Larnell Lewis he's also a monster on the kit. If you need some directions, try Snarky Puppy - Lingus. It's a masterpiece
He’s not hitting it entirely right though. Not that it matters. But in the original, Danny Carey is doing 5 bars of 1-2-3 and on the 6th bar he is doing 1-2 and then back to 1-2-3 on the 7th bar. Juuust some info..
Thanks so much for the great commentary! I never thought I'd see a reaction to one of my videos - I'm humbled.
You’re more than welcome John. Your videos are great. Thanks again!
The thing that I enjoy the most about Tool is how, if you're younger than the band members, you get their lyrics and message better as years pass and you get more experience...
They share a lot of very mature messages and emotions I'm fear inoculum, it only gets better with time! 👌🏿🤟🏿
I love this guy’s off-the-cuff comments.
Love watching John's covers, as far as i know you're the first to post a reaction to one. His dissection of Rosetta Stoned should be required viewing for any serious drum student. John kew rosetta stoned have also a drum only version and a drum dissection video ... awesome
Lateralus, Right in Two, and Rosetta Stoned by JohnKew are incredible.
We demand reactions to JohnKew's Rosetta Stoned, Right in two and Lateralus. WE DEMAND IT!
Well bud u get a like right off the bat 👍 john kew is top notch, pure talent
Fear Innoculum is a mesmerizing journey. Life changing music
Automatic like for bringing up Invincible first, my favorite song on the album. Welcome aboard, you have decades of new music for you to listen to, enjoy it.
This is so wonderful, seeing first timers break through right in front of us .. it's almost as good as experiencing it for ourselves.
Yeah i agree, Rosetta Stoned by Jon is a must. Love to see somebody react to these videos, and you're a really cool dude! Cheers man and hope for more Tool drum cams.
"Since I started listening to Fear Inoculum, I have not stopped listening to Fear Inoculum"

Thanks for the kind words!
The part you yell "OMG 4/4!" is still in 7 haha. Danny just plays 4 over it.
Check out old Tool, Danny has been killing it since the 90's. The climax of the Grudge is my favorite piece of drumming ever, literally an eargasm every time.
I just heard that climax in the other night and fully appreciated it. There is a a similar drumming climax experience at the end of Vicarious
Tool Army here. Start the journey from the beginning.
100% Agree!!!
I'm actually DYING from laughter!! I just came off from watching Mr. Zypher react to the God of Drumming himself on Pneuma, and I had a quick little inkling of a thought when he said, "Oh, I'm not a TOOL fan, I've never been a TOOL fan, etc. etc..." I thought, "I bet you you will be now!!"

Nice to see you Lieutenant Portillo of the Tool Army 52nd brigade.
Tool Army here!🤘

This album is all in 7. Seven songs and 7empest. Hope you do more Tool reactions. Good stuff! ✌️
Dude, I just finished watching your two Tool reaction videos and wished you had more. I subscribed as a result so I hope to see future Tool reaction videos.
John's cover of Rosetta Stoned is absolutely mind-boggling. You would enjoy it, rest assured
I got addicted to John's covers of tool last year. Does it hurt to know he's self taught??
Good reaction with knowledge. Interesting to know you didn't like tool before. Shame but we all learn and see the light eventually. Enjoy...
I'm a bassist of 30 years and I find myself watching more of John's drum covers than I do bass covers of the same songs. John. Is. Just. That. Good.🥁
Invincible is the best song on Fear Inoculum and top 5 Tool songs ever.
I second that! Roseta is probably one of his most insane work
Definitely making my way round to it!
That moment at 11:11 when you're drowning in the tool and then they toss you the 4/4 life saver floaty, straightening things out for a bit lol.
This is my favourite Tool song at the moment. And I actually use it to introduce others to Tool.
Like you said man. Note perfect. He does some amazing covers 👍👍👍
For me Danny is the most musical drummer out there, he writes lines and melodies on the whole kit that are more than time keeping groove mechanisms. when you shouted "Oh ymy god! 4/4" it was still in 7!
Do another johnkew - Rosetta stoned
this guy has the best reaction videos... "maybe thats my problem, i should spend more time in the gym" lmao
Sent here by one of our dedicated Subscribers Sandra Nelson. Awesome video. Subscribed! Can't wait to check out more. Greetings from the USA
Thanks! I’ve also subbed back, enjoy your videos.
If Danny ever fell ill at the last second before a show, John Kew would be an outstanding fill in!
For this album, Danny pointed out in interviews, that they found different ways of expressing seven; 5,2... 3,2,2... 3,4... triple seven etc
I was pretty indifferent to Tool until my mid 20s or so. My friends were obsessed but I was a late bloomer. Now I love them and Fear Innoculum is a fantastic album.

Oh please watch the johnkew drum cover for Rosetta Stoned. It's absolutely mesmerising.
Please keep more of these videos coming! Loved it
Thank you!
Wait till you listen to the Lateralus album 🤯🤘🏼
My favourite album and second favourite song of all time (Reflection tops it for me). Man, at 19 TOOL melted my brain, and I've stuck with them ever since (18 years or so)
He might shit himself
heheh, imagine his face
Don’t tell him about ænema
I really enjoy your technical analysis.
I love how he uses the hi-hat only at the climax of the first build up. I really need to finally sit down and listen to the bloody album.

JohnKews Rosetta Stoned cover
The entire album revolves around the number 7. It's their 7th album release too.

Check out Matt Garstka from animals as leaders! He's a master of time, truly one of the most creative drummers of this generation.
You can take the warrior out of the war but you can't take the war out of the warrior. ✌
You: "It's finally four four!"
Tool: "Gotcha 😉"
(Listen closer)
As for the group and meters in seven, the theme of the album was 7's, as the track number and closing track insinuate
More Tool. Really enjoy your videos and your analysis
I love how Danny bleeds-together several notes into a chunk
Fibonacci sequences. I'm sure you've already heard. And you are right, the mind melts.
Incredible! 😎✌🏼❤️
Great reaction from a drummer prospective. I cover a few Tool songs on drums but nothing like that one. Some day! Stinkfist is easy..
Love the reaction. I highly suggest that you checkout Jinjer's drummer, Vladislav Ulasevich. Honestly, any live video they have. There are several drum cam videos that are on TH-cam as well. Didn’t know about the word hench. Might need to borrow for use in the US.

I'm a tool! That dude killed it on drums.
You mention Tom usage and building a track. Though different styles in a sense his usage reminds me of the whole Bonzo & Page conversations between guitar and drums. Epic. Non-normal and fun to listen too. Your thoughts?
Welcome to the TOOL army.
A lot of John's have also a drum only version.
I lose sleep over this song
More Tool. John Kew style!!!
46 & 2, Lateralus, Aenema(take 2) and The Pot by Meytal Cohen are must sees.
Ya dude, you should listen to him 1) breakdown Rosetta Stone, and then watch him play it, “note perfect!” He’s pretty impressive and his drumming improved from his play of Rosetta Stone.
13:06 lol
If you go back in reverse order of their album releases, you go from this to an arguably harder sound. I like to turn the bass to 11 and listen to 'Prison Sex' from the Undertow album.
You seriously must watch Eloy Casagrande/desperate cry (drum cam live ) he is the drummer of Sepultura. unbelivable
There’s a reason there’s a song called 7empest
Opiate album. I swear you'd be the only one reviewing that. Everyone seems to forget it even exists.
Hearing you say that you started playing at 13, you really ought to watch the O'Keefe Music Foundation cover of "46 and 2." Listen to a bunch of teens and pre-teens make a Tool song their own, including a 13 year old on drums.

Wide Putin was on point!
Danny plays PAISTE. I love the sound of his ride so much I went and bought one.
Lateralis will send him over the edge.

Hey dude, you must be familiar with him but, react to Larnell Lewis he's also a monster on the kit. If you need some directions, try Snarky Puppy - Lingus. It's a masterpiece
9:26 Those are Nonuplets. Like bloody Nonuplets. Not Triplets, not Quintuplets or not even Sextuplet but bloody Nonuplets
He’s not hitting it entirely right though. Not that it matters.
But in the original, Danny Carey is doing 5 bars of 1-2-3 and on the 6th bar he is doing 1-2 and then back to 1-2-3 on the 7th bar.
Juuust some info..
Plz react to Dan Presland, Ne Obliviscaris
