Friendly advice. Instead of using 400gr for scuffing the whole wheel, just buy a some red scotch brite pads. This will do the same thing and is a lot easier to work with and will take a fraction of the time to do. Spraying silvers are tricky because with all the metallic, if paint or clear coat is laid on too heavy in one spot you can get "pooling" of the metallic flakes. Spray, medium wet coats, not heavy or wet wet coats of the silver. In between coats, when paint is dry, use a tack cloth to pick up the access silver or metallic flakes that have dried on top of paint. When spraying the clear. First coat spray a fog/light coat of clear. Doing this will lesson the chance of getting runs in your clear coat. Also try and keep the same distance when spraying. With that being said, this is great for those who really don't have the equipment and professional supplies. Have a great day!
Looks good! It’s been a few years since I have painted wheels, using the same process. With the runs, now that the wheel is dry, you can sand them out with 1000-1500grit and polish it out if it bothers you.
Excellent video - thanks for making it! You inspired me to paint my 951 wheels and they turned out beautifully! Used the same paint and clear coat that you did. I took my tires off before painting them. I was able to do all 4 wheels and center caps with a single can of silver and a single can of clear.
I'm literally going through all of your Porsche videos now and I really wonder how you got this good at it. You don't strike me as a natural borne handy man so tell me how you got to do all these car fixes and mods yourself. Huge kudos for you and thank you for sharing.
Great video, to those who thinking about value of time to some projects like this, it is about how you enjoy the whole process, if you enjoyed your time is worth it, if you are not enjoyed what you are doing, even you earn $1000 dollars per hour, but you hate it, then you decide what to do with your time.
I did recently did my rims for my 1997 4runner and I did gloss black, turned out pretty dam good but I wasn’t familiar with everything and the clear coat did run a little on the first rim but other than some other minor imperfections they look amazing👍🏽👍🏽
Just bought a 2010 GTS with same wheels and color combo a couple of weeks ago...and wouldn’t you know it, curbed one of the wheels yesterday. Was pissed at myself but luckily, that wheel already had another imperfection on it. Like you bought another silver paint thinking it would match, no luck. Just ordered the Wurth paint and will be doing it properly this weekend.
Looks good. Only thing I'd do different was to paint the inner parts of the wheel then spray the perimeter. The runs shouldn't bother you. After brake dust and a few other road defects it won't matter. Again great video. Thank-you.
Great video!! From what, 3-5 feet away you can’t really even see the runs? Pretty cost effective and you get that quality one on one time with your vehicle. The most important ingredient when doing a DIY like this is patience, of which I unfortunately have very little. Great work!
I have watched you video however just to make sure. Do you advise to sand the entire wheel to take the top coat off or just sand down the imperfections. Thanks
Really looks nice I have to do the same on mines, which after 10 years fof use, have seen better days But thinking on going full “stealth” mode, as have recently seen another black 957 turbo, with the wheels, and all the chrome bits blacked out
+Alberto Laita I'm not a fan on the murdered look, but if you want to try it, you could start with Plasti Dip. It's removable and doesn't require all the prep work. Thanks for watching!
I don't recommend painting your lugs. The threads shouldn't be painted and it'll just come off when you tighten them. Instead, just clean them up with a steel wire wheel.
Great vid, very clear on the process. How does this hold up over time? Curious to know what they look like in 2-3 years. If I wanted to take my bright silver wheels and darken them to a smoky gray, would you recommend this painting method or taking them somewhere and having them powder coated?
Thanks for replying, I Watch your vídeos, I'M from Brazil and I'M in love with Porsche. My dream fe consumption is the Cayenne turbo 2008, a pity that has a very high price here in my Country even used. I wish success on your channel more and more and may God bless you always.
man i don't know if i got a bad batch or wurth silver wheel paint or what, but my results were terrible and i prepped perfectly. the paint barfed out of the rattle cans spitting specs of bright silver here and there but mostly a nasty dark gray paint color. and i shook those can like a madman beforehand. i am so disappointed. i prepped my wheels for days and all i got was the worst imaginable results
Did you hear the ball rattling inside? Definitely sounds like it wasn't mixing or the can was extremely old so the pigment and metallics settle hard on the bottom and don't mix with all the solvent.
I have 2015 Nissan Altima. I believe the rims are stock. If I wanted to do them black. What would I need ? Also would like a gloss look. Any advice is very helpful. Thank you
5 hours per wheel. Decent results. Cost of materials is what...$40/wheel? ($160 total). It would cost about $150/wheel ($600 total) to have it professionally done. Not sure how valuable your time is, but I’d rather spend the extra $450 to save 20 hours of difficult work (which might yield questionable results). That said, great vid and tutorial. If I was 20 again, and working on my Acura Integra (which I did every weekend) I’d be all over this.
+jason starek I would not paint all 4 wheels. That would take too long to do it right. That said, I've never been quoted $600 to have my wheels painted. Removing the tires and mounting them back on using Road Force balancing is $100 or so already. I paid $950 to have my 997 wheels powder coated. Single color would have been $800. Also, if you don't care about using this special paint, Duplicolor is much cheaper per can. But yeah, it was a lot of work.
it always is a question of time vs money, Wheels came out great. No one cares how good the paint job is up close because everyone’s wheel have nicks or paint chips if you drive it regularly. Good tutorial.
Hillary Real POTUS please educate us, Where did he cut corners? I'd love to know how you can speculate 3 months time. Do you know how often he drives his car? How about where or how he drives it? Is it left out in the sun? Garaged? Covered parking? Climate? Location? Did you take these things into account? Please educate me!
Hillary Real POTUS.... Yeah, I can agree with you on the materials used but I'd rather argue with a two year old than hear anymore of your claims to longevity to the work done here without asking the questions I mentioned above....
Been doing the same for years...and take crap for it ALL the time...couldn't care less...LOL too! I agree on the street cred...who's gonna' mess with ya' if they know you don't care??
May I ask if it’s possible to paint the wheels without taking them off? I’m trying to surprise my mom for her birthday by painting her Porsche Macan wheels black but I’m scared to take the wheels off.
Yeah, I wouldn't recommend painting her wheels as a surprise gift. Unless you really know what you're doing the results will not be on par with factory quality. I only painted mine because the paint wasn't great to begin with.
🤯😬 may be a very bad surprise! Also, you would be risking getting overspray on her Macan, not a good idea! I'd probably throw-up with anger if someone painted my wheels as a "surprise" LOL.
Just wet sand your clear coat where it ran, get the whole wheel nice and dull, then compound and polish. Can believe you put your wheels back on with runs in the paint. Porsche owners I guess.
I am working on a family member's 2009 corolla. Is there a website where we can put in the VIN and/or color code and it would tell us which can of paint to buy? We need to paint the front bumper. Thanks.
Thanks! Ironically, my newly painted wheel got all scratched up from something. Not sure what, but all the wheels will probably need to get freshened up at some point. Thanks for watching. Hope you're subscribed!
No, it's not necessarily a bad habit to mask first. Sanding dust is very fine, that's not what you see stuck in the paint when you're done. Also, spray cans are VERY low pressure so it's not going to blow surrounding dust all over the place. You just need more care in cleaning and blowing the dust away when masking first. When I do my Cayenne wheels, I will be masking first... But I do have 30 years collision and refinish experience. TC
Ahhh ya know it looks like total garbage but looks fine to me....🙄 Ummmm howbout u wet sand it and paint it again one more coat. How hard would that have been? And u need to remove the tape BEFORE the paint dries otherwise u risk it flaking off and peeling part of the rim finish off with it. Not to mention u will want to RE-USE ur tape on another wheel!
No, you are not going to reuse the tape on other wheels. No, there is not much risk of paint peeling when removing tape as spray cans are far less material than if it was painted with a spray gun... Would highly doubt there is any "bridging" of the paint.
Friendly advice.
Instead of using 400gr for scuffing the whole wheel, just buy a some red scotch brite pads. This will do the same thing and is a lot easier to work with and will take a fraction of the time to do.

Great tips thanks!
Very nice. You could always wetsand those runs with 1500 grit sandpaper and then use some compound to buff the shine back.
Kudos for showing the imperfections.
+snethss thanks for watching!
When your vehicle is outside and you were pointing out the clear coat runs I still couldn't see them I think you did a good job 👍
Looks good! It’s been a few years since I have painted wheels, using the same process. With the runs, now that the wheel is dry, you can sand them out with 1000-1500grit and polish it out if it bothers you.

I took my tires off before painting them. I was able to do all 4 wheels and center caps with a single can of silver and a single can of clear.
Very impressive you were able to do that with a single can. Congrats!
How long did it take you to complete all 4 wheels?
Nice DIY! Results are great on your whip. Thanks for posting. Cheers from Tampa Bay
I'm literally going through all of your Porsche videos now and I really wonder how you got this good at it. You don't strike me as a natural borne handy man so tell me how you got to do all these car fixes and mods yourself. Huge kudos for you and thank you for sharing.
Good descriptive video. Why not sand and clean before you mask off the wheel so that you can thoroughly wash off any residue material?
Great video, to those who thinking about value of time to some projects like this, it is about how you enjoy the whole process, if you enjoyed your time is worth it, if you are not enjoyed what you are doing, even you earn $1000 dollars per hour, but you hate it, then you decide what to do with your time.

Nice video thanks for posting. The color is perfect. I'm thinking of getting Wurth paint for my 944 Phone dials.
Looks really good ! Going to try this this weekend
Did you do it 😀
This is brilliant 😎
You've made me want to spray my Avensis steel wheels 😀
Just bought a 2010 GTS with same wheels and color combo a couple of weeks ago...and wouldn’t you know it, curbed one of the wheels yesterday. Was pissed at myself but luckily, that wheel already had another imperfection on it. Like you bought another silver paint thinking it would match, no luck. Just ordered the Wurth paint and will be doing it properly this weekend.
Sand prior to masking otherwise you need to re-mask. There will be dust on top of all that plastic inside the wheel.
Looks good. Only thing I'd do different was to paint the inner parts of the wheel then spray the perimeter. The runs shouldn't bother you. After brake dust and a few other road defects it won't matter. Again great video. Thank-you.
Thanks for sharing your supply list. That spray handle works really well.
Try using playing cards to mask off the tire from the rim. Much easier to apply and easy to take off
Great video!! From what, 3-5 feet away you can’t really even see the runs? Pretty cost effective and you get that quality one on one time with your vehicle. The most important ingredient when doing a DIY like this is patience, of which I unfortunately have very little. Great work!
+K1dPhresh1 thanks!
YES I LOVE car videos like these! Your rims look BEAUTIFUL and now I must clean my wheels :)
Also by the way I forgot to ask what the hand tool you used for the spray paint? (The extended handle)
+King Lonne yeah, just a basic one. It's in linked in the description. Thanks for watching!
Hi really very good job and very good finishing
I have watched you video however just to make sure. Do you advise to sand the entire wheel to take the top coat off or just sand down the imperfections. Thanks
Really looks nice

Good job. I will take on the project of the same type wheels on my Cayenne. My lug nuts are rusted and I will paint them as well.
I don't recommend painting your lugs. The threads shouldn't be painted and it'll just come off when you tighten them. Instead, just clean them up with a steel wire wheel.
@@CarFanatic Thanks for the tip.
It looks good to me you did a good job.
Thanks!
Great tutorial!
Thanks!
This video gets a thumbs up from me 👍
Nice video explaining how to do this. The body filler can be used for curb rash and painted over. This would be fore a Porsche 911.
Great vid, very clear on the process. How does this hold up over time? Curious to know what they look like in 2-3 years. If I wanted to take my bright silver wheels and darken them to a smoky gray, would you recommend this painting method or taking them somewhere and having them powder coated?
Matthew Rogers I had my 19” wheels powder coated. It’s definitely more expense but should last essentially forever whereas paint will chip.
+waterboy1628 I have powder coated wheels on my 997 and they can indeed chip as well. But it does seem more durable.
+Matthew Rogers unless you have the time, patience, and desire, go with powder coating. It will be a lot easier.
Congratulations for your vídeos!
+Elismar Moreira Dos Santos thanks you!

How’d the Wurth clear hold up I was thinking of going with a 2k clear. How long before the wheel showed any wear
Hello, how much time between the last coat of paint and the clear coat ?
Great Video!! Thanks
man i don't know if i got a bad batch or wurth silver wheel paint or what, but my results were terrible and i prepped perfectly. the paint barfed out of the rattle cans spitting specs of bright silver here and there but mostly a nasty dark gray paint color. and i shook those can like a madman beforehand. i am so disappointed. i prepped my wheels for days and all i got was the worst imaginable results
Sorry to hear that. The prep is almost all of the work. Did you buy more than 1 can? Sounds like the paint wasn't mixing properly.
Thank you
Same stuff but just get black wheel paint
Good job

Been doing the same for years...and take crap for it ALL the time...couldn't care less...LOL too! I agree on the street cred...who's gonna' mess with ya' if they know you don't care??
Hard to see the imperfections, not a bad job. Plus with dirt etc, you can't tell.
How did the spots where you used bondo turn out?
+Jay Madore good, not perfect, but it looks a lot better.
How many cans do you think you will need for all 4 alloys?
Realistically, you need one can of paint per wheel and half a can of clear.
This is what happens if you apply the paint or lacquer to thick,or from to close to the rim.
May I ask if it’s possible to paint the wheels without taking them off? I’m trying to surprise my mom for her birthday by painting her Porsche Macan wheels black but I’m scared to take the wheels off.

Lol ya I thought about it and just got her cake and flower instead.
How long should I let the primer dry for ?
I'd say about an hour. The longer the better though
You should prefably wait 48 hours before taking it on the road.
Just wet sand your clear coat where it ran, get the whole wheel nice and dull, then compound and polish. Can believe you put your wheels back on with runs in the paint. Porsche owners I guess.
Dose it hold for strong wheel soap and high water pressure?
No issues so far even through the automatic car wash!
Painting the inside is a waste of money. Good job.
I am working on a family member's 2009 corolla. Is there a website where we can put in the VIN and/or color code and it would tell us which can of paint to buy? We need to paint the front bumper. Thanks.
Try checking out the door jam and other factory stickers. One usually contains the color code.
Yep, on your Toyota it's on the door jamb decal along with the VIN number and a bunch of other info.
The thumbnail is the wheel cleaned, I thought you painted then that color lol
Great video, you're very meticulous!
+jkfuel thanks!
Can’t you wet sand those runs and recoat clear coat?
Yes I could but I was short on time
I would give your wheels 24hrs to cure after painting them before putting them back in the car.
Ehh paint run isn’t that bad
Good thing about silver is it hides a lot of imperfections 🤣
Thanks! Ironically, my newly painted wheel got all scratched up from something. Not sure what, but all the wheels will probably need to get freshened up at some point. Thanks for watching. Hope you're subscribed!

Not even close, not if you're doing a decent job.
