Arming yourself at sea is bad decision for many reasons. Firstly, pirates pretty much never are there to harm you, they want your stuff or in some cases ransom you. Secondly, pirates will ALWAYS have the advatage of surprise and initiative. They can come at night silently, approach as normal fishing boat or swim like in this case. Thirdly, they will be armed, and in most cases outgun you, if it comes to firefight, you will be in disadvantage in every aspect all the while endangering everyone on board. Then there are multitude of legal problems and extra costs to deal with, it's a lot of trouble to get permits and some countries just don't allow it at all. Shipping companies don't arm themselves because it's expensive, risks ships and lives of people. Really only way guns could work if you treat your ship like military vessel, set up actual 24h guard patrol and treat any nearby vessel as threat. But this would just deny you many great experiences and make time aboard miserable. But even after all this preparation, you will still be at greater risk of harm than you would be without guns.
Always have someone on watch when in isolated anchorage. Be ready to move at a moment's notice. Much harder for them to board a moving boat. Keep your cabin and navigation lights off. Also have a bright spotlight and lasers to point and blind them if the get too close at night. Fire a flare gun to illuminate them and warn others.

Totally agree. Stand a watch. Fire warning shots if needed. Go into offensive mode if fired upon. There’s footage of crew firing warning shots into the air from a shotgun at around 150m of boat separation and Somali pirates subsequently withdrawing - pirates don’t want a fight. The trick is early detection - radar, standing a watch and showing determined resistance early.
My two Bob - the defenders in this instance did what worked for them, and have reviewed/amended their defensive measures, and should be commended. I have my thoughts on security measures of various levels, based on situation awareness, monitoring, avoidance, early detection, maintaining distance, layers of security/defence. Bottom line - sailors need a practiced plan based on the time/place/context.
How terrifying...can't even start to imagine what it must of have felt to be strained with a gun pointing at you for 45 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!! HORRIFIC experience
The fact that people sail internationally with zero firearms absolutely boggles my mind. Outside of home defense or being in a war zone. I can think of no situation more appropriate for keeping weapons. It's even more appropriate than when I conceal carry daily..
2 intruders had their hands on him before he knew there was a threat. What good is a machine gun or auto cannon in that situation? Did you listen to the interview at all?
@@MrJhchrist With a pistol you can point and shoot very quickly. Since we were not there, we really don't know if he had time to just pull the trigger. You don't need a machine gun. Also in the US you can't get a machine gun, true automatics and not semiautomatics, without ATF approval. Even the ones that are for sale and ATF tax stamp, run $15K-45K. A gun could not be used in all cases, but like a seat belt, you rather have than have not. New Zealander got killed by pirates in Panama. The old folks say guns are not the answer, so is not offering up your loved ones to be killed or rape.
mongomay1 this robbery was on day light still but yes we have came with really good ideas and we are using it. The electric fence it’s probably the best one 🤷♀️
For so many reasons firearms are not the answer for short-handed cruisers. It's only in the USA that guns are so widely embraced as the solution to criminals. On land, you can hide, shoot back or shoot your way out and drive away, that is, if you're a good shot, lucky and steady under pressure. You can hold them at bay and call the police. You have none of those advantages on a boat. There's no place to hide. It's their country, not yours. They know their way around, you don't. You may have one gun, but It's a pretty safe bet they will have more than one and you are a easier target. There's nothing you can do if they get onto the boat. You can neither run nor hide. If you pull a gun at that point, you will probably not survive. You may take out 1 or 2 or them, but there will be others, and they will have friends nearby in faster boats than yours. The most likely outcome is it will raise the temperature of the situation, and they will take the gun and use it on you, and take out their anger on your shipmates in horrible ways. Then there is the matter of customs. Most of the rest of the world is not as in love with guns are Americans are. Unless you're a military vessel, Having a gun onboard raises suspicions and makes you more noticeable. If you don't declare one and they find it, you can be in big big trouble. Your best approach is to stay calm, not antagonize them and give them what they want. You can replace stuff. You can't be un-raped or un-killed.
David Lawrence you are so right on everything you said and we are completely against guns as well. But on the last incident about 4 weeks ago, the cruisers “collaborate “ with everything and the two ladies were rapped. Is no rules on these situations, luck perhaps. Some of these men are in prison at the moment after the latest incident but for how long? We all know how things are in the third world countries. Thank you very much for your comment David, hope to see you around more often. Cheers
@@Insightful_Truth I am so sorry Jennifer. I hope you are well after such a trauma. The Caribbean can be much more dangerous than some people think. Stay safe please ❤️
If this happens in America, do not call the police. Because when the police arrive, you are likely to see the pirates among them. My boat was attacked near Miami twice. The first time the guys had machine guns and a boat that said "Homeland Security" on the side. They used their boat to ram my outboard bracket over and over until they destroyed it, leaving my boat dead in the water. The second time, two of the same guys showed up in civilian clothes with a speedboat. They poured my drinking water into my fuel tank. Don't come here!
You know what would be helpful is to know what the local authorities are doing about this . This is starting to happen a little to often in this area. Basically if the authorities set up a few ghost boats to sail around the area to catch these people. They may just think twice about jacking these cruisers. As punishment drop them off 20 miles off the coast . First one to shore gets a prize 🥇🏅 Dont forget to rub them down with fresh Tuna oil ......helps keep them warm .. wouldn't want them to catch cold
They got 3 of them so far, let’s hope that they will stay in prison for some time. The big problem is when the police is also involved, that turns the game to be more difficult

Getting pushed down the companionway .... yikes, I think I’d NOT rely on the intruders good nature. Once the first couple of them get shot, the rest will scatter. Step up and finish them off is up to you.
The community would probably be grateful.
Sailors really ought to be allowed to own defensive weapons.
@@superresistant0 might they just do that anyway? can you really count on those people to be merciful? i`d feel better if my boat had some means of defence.

I would not.

Wow,great video
Central America, for the most part, is ok, MANY PLACES aren’t as wholesome as depicted in magazines.
Life is about managing risks.
HORRIFIC experience
yaa63 yes I agree, the most terrifying experience these guys had
If im ever going to sail, it ll just be around the Med and probably along the coast of Morocco down to the Canaries
It will be good enough around there believe me. We are going back to that area now. Cheers
The fact that people sail internationally with zero firearms absolutely boggles my mind.
Outside of home defense or being in a war zone. I can think of no situation more appropriate for keeping weapons. It's even more appropriate than when I conceal carry daily..
Well, our boat is guns free. Cheers
@@SailingOceanFox it's a choice. We all free to accept the calculated risks of our chosen strategy ✌😎🚬

Well said. It should be a free choice for everyone.

The best way to avoid this is to anchor in groups and have watch on turn
Maybe solar or motion detector lights that you can turn on in the evenings pointed towards where folks could climb aboard???

michael d yes, that’s always one of the things we do, stay around other boats
Cheers
@@SailingOceanFox Unfortunately I was raped while sailing in the Caribbean waters.
@@Insightful_Truth I am so sorry Jennifer. I hope you are well after such a trauma. The Caribbean can be much more dangerous than some people think. Stay safe please ❤️
An unarmed father was killed by pirates in Honduras. Being at the mercy of criminals seems unimaginable to me.
It is better to have a gun and not need it than need a gun and not have it. Pirates need lessons too.
Make sure to bring your most expensive and prized gun with you when sailing internationally.
British response, "self protection" isn't the way to go.
And we gave the Panama Canal back to these chumps. Well that certainly made it a better place.

Buy some packs of counterfeit theater money and offer it to them, they'll never know the difference.
This is why I'm armed on my boat with several different varieties of defense, flares spear guns,
after spending over a decade around the yachting and sailing industry, the FIRST thing a knowledgable Captain or owner will do is arm the vessel.
After spending over a decade on yachts and in the sailing industry, I can assure you that is incorrect.
Police by day, pirates by night.

First one to shore gets a prize 🥇🏅
Dont forget to rub them down with fresh Tuna oil ......helps keep them warm
.. wouldn't want them to catch cold
A couple on deck and a dozen marines below.
They got 3 of them so far, let’s hope that they will stay in prison for some time. The big problem is when the police is also involved, that turns the game to be more difficult

Daniel Pearson yes some of the places in the Caribbean are not safe at all but it’s a shame to miss because they are beautiful. You have a beautiful route planning. We should go back to the Med next year and spend sometime there, it’s much safer.

Yes, they are awasome
Ive yet to come across an opinion/comment of having dog(s) on board to at least give an audible warning, or even a deterrent, ahead of time before the bad guys are actually on board. Why?
That's funny the attitude of these Germans or Dutchmen and the Italians who shot at the pirates with their shotgun. I see why Rome conquered so much of the world.
