  • Arising from the dust of Indian ponies, wagon wheels, and SUVs, Route 11 is more than just a highway. Route 11 carries a story that predates the arrival of European settlers. Once called The Indian Trail and The Wagon Road, early settlers followed the Indian path as they forged their way into the valley. This presentation features interviews with tourists, entrepreneurs, and historians about life along the single-lane roadway and also visits historic sites, institutions of higher learning, and communities by the side of the historic road.

I have spent many hours traveling both Hwy 11 and I-81. Both offer beautiful vistas. Although it's much slower going, Hwy 11 is the best for watching the Valley's long history pass by. Great video.

Interstate 81 offers great scenery. You can really see the details of your surroundings while you are sitting still in the traffic jams for hours at a time.

Just thought I'd see what TH-cam had about "The Great Wagon Road" and this is the first of the group I've watched. Well done.
Please don't update or re-do. History doesn't need to be rewritten.
I'm from Staunton; my people arriving in late 18th century.
As '81' construction was just beginning, I so clearly remember folks saying such as, "That's such a waste on money! Who is going to drive clear over there ( from '11), just to get to Lexington."🫢
