Only on your second video and I'm already hooked. As someone who trains in boxing and, I can tell that you're one of those guys who has had years of real experience and you aren't just an enthusiast. Keep up the good work. 👍🏾
You forgot to mention the simple waist bend. Best slip for boxing. Does not use the legs and gets you head off the line and you have more weapons at your disposal off the waist bend. Try it, you'll like it.
You can get the first bit of head movement, slipping and counters off the slip from a lot of places. The nugget of info you're looking for is that part where he shows you the correct way to break the rules. That bit he showed about bringing in that overhand while moving and not staying in front of the dude is why this is a great channel. More of this, please. I know your bread-and-butter is the level one, first year of fighting stuff. Would like more of the "let's know why you're breaking the rules" stuff.
I love head movement ; slipping and especially rolling... I used to train that a lot... one of my favorite fighters Steve Moxon was a beast at adding head movement to his kickboxing.. he fought more like a boxer he was very punch heavy and lots of head movement. I studied his videos for hours.
The whole ‘stand and bang’ myth that people think originates from Muay Thai makes many individuals believe that the only way to fight is to stand still and smash each other up. Head movement is the basis of all good fighters’ technique and should be used in self defence and competition as much as possible.
I'm a big fan of slipping punches because despite back problems and issues with Tourette's Syndrome and spasming legs, I find a lot of control is available to me by slipping punches and throwing some back despite my pain and spasming. I used to train predominantly as a grappler with some Kickboxing-esque Taekwondo and other methods of striking, but now that it's not entirely safe for me to do either, Boxing has become incredibly useful to me, especially anything that allows me to get a good counter punch in against my attacker. I'm moving soon and they have an MMA gym that teaches Boxing, so I'm really looking forward to having a proper instructor again. I'm hoping to one day instruct others in martial arts, and I hope that Boxing will provide me with the chance to make my goals happen in that regard since I don't think any kind of grappling is possible for me anymore. Anyway, if I had to describe the way I Box, I am more of a counter-puncher than anything, picking and choosing my strikes, and creating ways for me to exploit openings in my opponent's guard. When I can finally train there after moving, I plan to approach everything like a blank slate. Even if I know (or think I know) something about learning a new skill, I take that time to treat it as though I don't so that I can gain as much skill and knowledge as I can and show my respect for those willing to teach me. Anyway, sorry for the ramble, but my point is that I've really come to love Boxing and I'm really looking forward to starting properly. In the meantime, videos like this one are very helpful to me. I also greatly appreciate your insight in your comment and I hope that you are doing well in all things, especially your own training. :D
Ronin 6 seriously man, good on you. I have the utmost respect for guys that have some physical things holding them back but continue to train and get fit. What excuse do the lazy couch potatoes have with guys like you out there killing it?
Alot of these " incorrect" punches you see the diaz brothers using in mma fights. Thats probably why many commentators say they have great mma boxing, while boxers say they dont have good boxing. Im not saying this whole video is a diaz video im just saying that this video is applicable and makes total sense if you have trained and sparred at all
Bro. Your video is perfect timing. I just thought my son how to slip and roll yesterday. This a good video for him. So he can get another perspective instead of just "Dad" telling him what to do. Keep making videos this is great stuff.
Pacquiao does those Strikes too, Love it! I actually don't see those as odd lookin, actually looks dope when it hits. In one of Pacquiao's highlights against Marquez, he did that Head evade with counter move and it was just so good!
Good stuff...Icey Mike laying it down again. Just wanted to add to this a tiny bit. Rolls and all that are great esp for the situation in the video (one guy being shorter) but the taller opponent should rarely if ever need to or even attempt to roll against a much shorter guy...For the taller fighter they'll want to pary, block, move in / out and use the long shots to their advantage. Some head movement is always good, but ducking to roll a punch from a shorter fighter would take too much time, distance and energy not to mention might set you up at that lower level to catch a hard shot.
mindsmash just did a vid on this very punch. In the last to weeks. This punch ended a few serious fights, against serious fighters, and it is indeed an uncommon punch. Very effective one though, and not a "cheat." A real, highly effective technique. With all the loading you can do...
I know Capoiera is only known for its flashy, yet devastating power kicks. What seems to get neglected is the head & body movement to avoid kicks. It's hard to describe through a TH-cam comment, but these evasive tactics can be used as a rather unexpected set up for tricky sweeps, powerful uppercuts/rising hooks or to just evade & either create or close distance as you see fit. Many people see the art as wholly impractical, but it's because they don't take apart the techniques & properly incorporate them with good fundamentals.
That secret roll-counter of yours is used to devastating effect by a Japanese fighter named Kikuno. He's a smaller guy, uses it to take out much bigger dudes.
I teach slipping like as if my students are head butting the incoming fist, but like, just missing. Keeps them from pulling their heads back when they slip shots and gets them moving foreward agressively.
Cool, Question, why don't many people cross to the liver when rolling from left to right? When I practiced Sanda it was a common way for a liver shot. Usually I see high punches as counters when slipping, but never see low punches when rolling, I did it often especially with tall opponents.
There is nothing wrong with it, you just can't show every thing in a single video. I have like 6 slip counters he didn't show and only use 1 that he did show, it's all stylistic.
@@andrewferris1903 I didn't mean why HE didn't show it, I mean why Is it hard to see it used in MMA, I see it sometimes in kickboxing, common in boxing and sanda but it's so rare in MMA and Muay Thai.
@@musicaremcasa7628 Most MMA fighters are head hunters, in order to play the body punch game you have to be willing to take the fight into the third or fifth round so that the damage can add up over time. In turn, that means body punching and fighting to attrition has to be your default strategy from the first round. Now in boxing, kickboxing and Sanda that makes a lot of sense, because those sports are fought behind 8 ounce gloves and high guards to the point where going around those defenses has a lot of value. In MMA you fight behind 4 ounce gloves and long guards, so the odds of getting a one punch KO through are much higher than any of those sports. In other words, punching to the head is the dominant strategy. In Muay Thai it is for several reasons, the first reason is that the scorring system in the sport is rigged against punches already - and if punching to the face does not score well then punching to the body scores even worse. The second reason is that changing levels to your left postions your head for an elbow or knee counter and breaks your posture for a clinch, so every liver punch needs a set up or else. The last reason is that Muay Thai has so many striking weapons that is generally considered unnecessary to liver punch when you could just knee or kick the liver instead. Now all that said, you do see the Liver Punch in MMA - Milos Stipic vs Daniel Cormiea saw Daniel buckle to the Liver Punch multiple times. Personally I think the body punch game is simply under developed in the MMA, the lead overhand right and takedown fake has dominated the stand up for too long when the body jab and takedown fake is superior IMO. But people want their knock outs and they want them right now, not after a dozen body punches or leg kicks. My advice is to just find a strategy that works for you, personally I am a 5'9" body punching and leg kicking weasle at my gym who specializes in throwing body jabs and liver punches off of my slips and leg kicks off of my blocks and parries. There isn't a single MMA fighter who has that game, but it works for me and that's all that matters.
@@andrewferris1903 thanks for tje complete answer!!!!! I used to practise kung Fu/Sanda and was 1,71 m with 88kg . I was a bit of a heavy hitter at my gym so body strikes worked nicely for me. I tried cutting angles, but he's very explosive so he just cut me off. When I used head movement, he has a way of following you that I've never seen before. When I tried to just cover and counter punch, he hit like a freight train, so even though I blocked all his shots and fed him some really decent shots, I felt every single one of his punches. I've never felt in so much danger since I first started fighting. Basically, everything I do to survive against skilled pure boxers stopped working.
