Got to meet Sebastian Stan on another movie. One the nicest guys you'll ever meet. A young fan spent two days on the outskirts of a set, staying out of the crew's way. Word got back to Stan that he had a fan patiently waiting. At the end of the day, his car pulled up and as he was driving away, the car passed her, stopped, and Sebastian came out, running to her and gave her a big hug, saying he was sorry he forgot about her. He took so pics with her, chatted for a few minutes, and I shook his hand before he left. A guy who appreciates his fans.
I "met" him once on a delivery. He was riding a stationary bike in his driveway. My boss was excited as he's from Romania and so it Sebastian. "Met" because it was essentially, "Hi. I have a delivery. Can you sign here please? Thank you."
This is one of the only Marvel films that feels like it is its own movie and is definitely top 3. It also shamelessly and brilliantly rips off the tone and themes of 1970s political thrillers, where nobody and nothing can be trusted. They even cast Robert "All The President's Men & Three Days of the Condor" Redford just to hammer home the 70s paranoia.
Also, keep in mind, if you ask Joe and Jane Moviegoer about their impressions of Robert Redford's characters, he's typically a "good" guy. At the minimum, he's not the antagonist. So, casting him in this role was brilliant, because it plays with people's expectations.
I really love it when a film franchise gives us the tone and flavor of a different genre of movie. Another example is how Star Wars Rogue One feels like a classic post-WW2 movie (Dirty Dozen, Guns of Navaronne, etc).
One of the little touches I like: Remember Gary Sinise playing the legless Lt. Dan in "Forrest Gump"? Because of that movie, he made so many friends in the military, I mean he was just beloved for emphasizing the after-service lives of wounded soldiers. And then after 9/11/01, he did tons of U.S.O. shows with his "Lt. Dan Band", it's pretty much his career since then. So when Steve Rogers goes to the museum, the voice narrating the WWII history is: Gary Sinise. Because who else would a military history museum turn to for that kind of thing, right? The filmmakers could have gotten anybody for that, but it's just an extra level of authenticity.
Such a Gen X reference that's lost on Millenials and Gen Z! (For those of you still confused, it's a reference to the 1983 Matthew Broderick movie WAR GAMES, where a big government computer almost accidentally starts World War III.... check it out! It's actually pretty good!)
For me it's weird, i know in my brain that this movie is probably one of, if not the best, films in the mcu, and yet i still favour other ones bc they just resonate w me more idk why
The fight scene at the docks in New York was actually filmed in the Stanley Dock Liverpool, England. The crashed cars and shoot out by the metal bridge was outside what is now the Titanic Hotel (the other side of the Stanley dock). The big warehouse is the old Tobacco warehouse which is/was the largest single structure made from house bricks. Built between 1900 and 1901.
I love how they didn't try to shoehorn a Steve/Natasha romance into the movie - they have more of a sibling vibe overall, which definitely continues to play out. One of my favorite Avengers relationships in the entire run.
And the fact that Steve even when he couldnt been with Peggy,, she was the one tha he want, Natasha and Cap have great chimstry because Chris and Scarlet have a great chimistry, but a realitionsip betwen them wouldnt work, and that why later they put Natasha wit other
Natasha has this thing where she becomes whoever she needs to be. Each relationship is different and she chooses the appropriate dynamic to always have an edge. It's subtle, but it's there throughout. She even states it at one point, I think it's even in this movie.
So glad you enjoyed this. This is my very favorite of *all* the Marvel Movies, and that rests entirely on the Steve/Bucky relationship. How Steve instantly believes that Bucky can be saved. How Steve is the one thing that overrides literally decades of torture and brainwashing and brings BUCKY back. It does not hurt that Sebastian Stan played this character masterfully, with grim, robotic, unfeeling deadliness, but then, as we see in the 'but I knew him' scene - this horrifying vulnerability, terror and pain, because he knows what 'wipe him' means, he can't stop them but he *questioned*.... *flails* Yes, I am a huge Bucky fan. :D
Just wanted to say, Captain America is more than just a guy with a shield. Just like Falcon is more than just a guy with a wingsuit. Taking those things away from them may slow them down, but that's definitely not all they got.
It's like why we had Iron Man 3 dedicated to showing us that Tony Stark is a superhero whether he's in the suit or not. Captain America is ALWAYS Captain America. The shield is just a special weapon.
@@ianburns1167 this is why I always have beef with ppl who say that Hawkeye or Widow aren't real superheroes because they aren't enhanced in any way, they are inly human. Like, that just makes them more of a superhero for me. A booster serum or being born a different species does not make one a hero. It's the choices and sacrifices they make to protect others. Like how real life superheroes are firefighters or nurses. Steve was ready to give his life to save others', he was a hero before the injection.
20:25 When Ashleigh said "I'm gonna need you to muster every ounce of strength," it reminded me that, as a kid, I learned the word "iota" from Captain America. Red Skull was holding the Cosmic Cube which could create anything he wished, and Cap was grappling with him. While holding the Skull's wrist, Cap was able to keep the Skull from exerting full control over the Cube (kind of like Batman was able to take control of a Power Ring from a bunch of Green Lanterns he was fighting because he had the strongest will). The narration said that Cap had to use "every iota of strength" and I thought "What a cool word!" I owe much of my my visual style and vocabulary Jack Kirby's work on Captain America and the Fantastic Four.
Stan Lee said that one of the hallmarks of Marvel was using accurate words and not dumbing down the language. "If a character was misanthropic, we just said he was misanthropic, and the reader learned what that means."
Reed Richards and Hank McCoy sent me to the dictionary more often than any teacher I ever had. Marvel comics should be part of preparation for the SAT.
You've officially hit Marvels stride. This is when we start seeing the Marvel we all know and love. All the following movies, maybe a few exceptions, are great and so much fun to watch.
Always loved that they cast Jenny Agutter as one of the members of the world security council, and that they gave her (even if it was Natasha in disguise) a kick-ass moment.
2 points about Jenny Agutter.... 1... Still ridiculously hot. 2... I want her to be to MI:13 what Nick Fury is to the Avengers (give me a Jenny Agutter "I'm putting a team together" scene at the end of the Blade movie please!)
This is certainly a movie you could have made without the super-hero stuff as a standard action movie. The whole thing would have worked as a James Bond or Mission Impossible plot with a couple tweaks here and there.
When Ashleigh kept asking questions about The Falcon I swear I kept making the Tobey Maguire meme face. I also love the MCU is giving so much light to Marvel characters that have been around for decades, but nobody outside of the Comics Culture knew anything about them, like The Falcon, Black Widow and of course Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. These aren’t spoilers cause Ashleigh just saw them in the post credits scene. This is the equivalent of like DC comics having Characters like Booster Gold and Blue Beetle show up in a movie or Zatanna and Hawkman or something.
Peak example being the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, where Marvel casually decides they're going to give us a series of emotional breakdowns over a cast comprised entirely of characters that even a lot of comic nerds couldn't have named beforehand.
It was a boon to us all that Marvel comics went bankrupt in the mid 90s and had to sell the movie rights to X-Men and Spider-Man, because if the hadn't then by the time Marvel Studies started rolling the MCU would have been 100% centered around those two IPs. Instead, they had they work with the rest of their lesser know characters and introduce them to movie audiences.
Thor The Dark World has become low key one of the most important films over time. It's biggest weakness is a common one for Marvel, it didn't know how to use its villain effectively.
I didn't like the movie much at first, but on successive viewings I see important points, such as Loki's character arc, his relationship with Thor, and the appearance of another Infinity Stone. Note as much as he complains about Thor and his foster father Odin, he dearly loves Frigga, even if he doesn't show it. The main villain wasn't handled properly because the screenwriters yanked him out of context from Walt Simonson's tapestry. ... That would be something to see, a series based on Simonson's Thor run!...
@@Caseytify As a major MCU fan (from the start), Malekith was probably the worst villain of the Infinity Saga (although Sonny Birch from A&W was close and so was Ultron). Their great villains were plentiful though (Stane, Loki, Red Skull, Killian, Pierce, Bucky, Ronan, Zemo, Dormammu, Ego, Vulture, Hela, Killmonger, Thanos, etc.
This is my personal favorite movie in the MCU. One of the few that I feel like could be a classic film on its own without the broader cinematic universe.
This will ALWAYS be a top tier marvel movie for so many reasons: the fight choreography is unbeatable, the story is so crisp and well written, the emotions are there, the mystery is clever, the twist is so well done, and it's so gritty and dark compared to anything marvel had done previously. It's just all around a fantastic action/spy-thriller.
Aw. It clipped ahead of my favorite part in the whole movie. "You're my mission. YOU'RE! MY! MISSION!" "Then...finish it... cau- cause I'm with you. Til the end of the line."
Ashleigh's ability to predict things in movies, and particularly in the MCU movies is amazing. 'Jarvis is pretty much a super hero now too.' !!! Wow :-)
@@LilFireFox sadly, I had to give up drinking cow's milk because of all the sugar in it. I now drink almond milk with heavy whipping cream in it. Tastes just like milk, is thick and creamy like milk, and no sugar!
Mine is "I'm not gonna launch those ships." Because that dude, nerdy little SHIELD tech, is the bravest character in this whole-ass movie. It's a great echo of what made Steve Rogers exceptional long before he was super.
@@noodle_fc That character (Cameron Klein) is incredibly brave. He has no means of defending himself, he has no expectation that anybody else is going to jump in at that moment and save him, and he's surely aware that Rumlow can just shoot him and launch the carriers himself, so his defiance probably won't even make any difference except getting him killed... but he still says 'no' with a gun to his head, invoking 'Captain's orders', expressing loyalty to a man who probably doesn't even know his name.
I really love how Ashleigh's favorite Marvel movies are most people's least favorite Marvel movies. This is why I never let reviews determine my decisions. Because everybody likes things differently. Never be afraid to have your own opinion. Great Job Ashleigh!!!
I just finished watching the MCU movies with my daughter (it was her first time watching them) and it is so great seeing her reactions to these amazing stories. Glad you are enjoying them as well! This was a big one and it only gets better from here on!
"How did the company come up with so many villains for every movie?" It's called 80+ years of comic book history. Also, at the end, they didn't have the Ether, they only have the Scepter. her powers being red is a reference to her characters comic book name, not any sort of connection to the Ether.
@@Mansplainer2099-jy8ps It is that clear cut. There are only so many colours to go around. We're 8 years later and there still isn't a connection between her and the Aether.
@@Carabas72 Of course there are only so many colours but they changed them around from the Infinity Gems so there's a 50/50 chance that they picked red for the Reality Stone because they were planning to get to Scarlet Witch. And Agatha Harkness' purple power-absorbtion seems so intentional I'm tempted to bump it up to 60/40 but that's just me.
@@Mansplainer2099-jy8ps Their supposedly mythical levels of foresight and planning break down completely when you realise that her powers are not from the Aether but all her own, amplified by Loki's Sceptre. And she has never been anywhere near the Aether except when fighting The Big Dude.
@@Carabas72 Clearly you're not getting the picture here, no one is saying Wanda's mother handled the Aether while pregnant and Agatha's handled the Power Stone, or something to that effect. The point would be the MCU would have this colour thing going like even if the Aether is not in play there'll be these red reality-connected "types" like Scarlet Witch and maybe Mephisto, even if the Power Stone isn't in play you'd get purple power-connected "types" (like maybe MCU Thanos gets stronger when X or bring in Wonder Man, they were throwing ideas around), even if the Time Stone isn't in play you'd get these green time-related "types" (Sylvie's enchanting?) etc. EDIT: And things change, I'm fairly sure the planning was Mjolnir would be somehow hiding the Soul Stone for example.
We've been waiting for you to get to this for so long. This is introduction to the beloved Russo Brothers, who will shape this universe more than most for years to come. This is when Cap became many people's favorite. This, for many fans, is when the MCU "grew the beard" (essentially the opposite of jumping the shark)
@@d.-_-.b I hadn't heard that phrase before either. TV Tropes seems to attribute it to when Riker grew a beard between TNG seasons and the show got a lot better
This is still probably my favorite of the MCU films. I love the fact that you do need the backstory of the rest of the films for it to make sense. By the time this came out I was invested.
LONG POST, Sorry ahead of time: So this movie is my favorite in the MCU (as shown by my profile avatar to the left) and Cap is my favorite character and movie series in it. Needless to say i was looking forward to this for a long time, ever since you started iron man. I am greatly relieved you loved this movie (you haven't really let me down yet. My faith remains.). Robert Redford (old blonde hydra dude) is a legendary actor and was chosen for this movie because in the 1970s he was known for being the Steve Rogers in political conspiracy/spy thriller movies like this one. I would highly recommend a lot of his movies and I guarantee his younger self could get it. Real down to earth and great guy, kinda like steve. Wings dude is a good friend of Cap in the comics. I won't give anything else away other than his name is Sam Wilson and he was the first african-american superhero in *comics* (which spans 80 years, hence all these great villains they keep plugging into these movies). Marvel has always been super progressive with social issues. :) Yes that is the staff loki used in the avengers movie. This is the movie that kicks marvel into high gear so to speak. there is nothing but greatness from here on out...mostly. there are a few eh movies but none have been regarded as lowly as Thor 2 and Hulk. You think it's great now, you are just getting started. Trust us. It's only gonna get harder to stick with one a month. ;) I cannot wait for naked gun 2. I am pumped! PS Get beans a cap costume or shield. that way she can be Captain AmeriCAT....aka CAT instead of Cap.
I'll never understand why The Incredible Hulk is so lowly regarded. I thought that Hulk incarnation was perfect, so much better than the perpetually confused looking Ruffalo Hulk.
Robert Redford will always be able to get it, but especially younger Redford. Back in the late ‘70s, 12-year-old me had a life sized poster of him on the back of my bedroom door. My favorite movie of his is The Sting.
2 things I love about your reactions… 1. I LOVE the way you are approaching these reaction. Not looking ahead is the absolute best way to stay spoiler free and enjoy to the fullest extent. 2. I love your rankings. Very different from a lot of fans and that is super refreshing to see. Literally everything from here out is going to blow your mind and I can’t wait to see it. It’s also nice to find a fellow Thor lover. I’ve always felt the first Thor film is criminally underrated. And you will LOVE Thor Ragnarock when you get there!
How about some Cult Classics: The Warriors (1979) Vanishing Point (1971) Sorcerer (1977) Rollerball (1975) - It is not about a pen In Bruges (2008) Idiocracy (2006) Repo Man (1984) Heathers (1988) Beerfest (2006) Office Space (1999) Escape From New York (1981) The Boys From Brazil (1978) From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) Slap Shot (1977) They Live (1988) Swamp Thing (1982) The Road Warrior (1982) The Rover (2014)
There was a made for TV remake of Vanishing Point. At the time I kinda hated it but realised it was only because the original was so good. If I had seen the remake first I think I would have really liked it. I would recommend watching the remake first.
Your explanation about Thor: The Dark World being just a placeholder to introduce the Ether is pretty much spot-on, and why people rank it low on the list of MCU movies. It's not a bad movie on its own, but compared to nearly all other MCU movies, it's pretty lackluster.
@@Grimlock1979 Yea, pretty much. It's kind of nasty to say, but the whole movie was basically "Here's a macguffin. It's necessary for the future", rather than being much of a worthwhile movie for its own sake. That said, it DID flesh out Loki a bit from being JUST a villain. So there's that.
Honestly, the idea that ANYONE woul spoil you in insane to me. My absolute favorite part is waiting for you to respond to the twists and surprises - it's as close to getting to rewatch them for the first time as I feel like anyone can get. LOVE this series so much!!
Regarding the actor playing the main villain, Betty White said, "My answer to anything under the sun, like, 'What have you not done in the business that you've always wanted to do?' is: 'Robert Redford.' " Ashleigh needs to watch some Redford films: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, 3 Days of the Condor, or (if she both wants to cry and see a very young Scarlett Johanson) The Horse Whisperer.
♫ "When Captain America throws his mighty shield All those who chose to oppose his shield must yield If he’s lead to a fight and a duel is due Then the red and the white and the blue’ll come through When Captain America throws his mighty shield" ♫
So it’s not fully explained, but the experiments done to Bucky by Hydra and the Soviet Union included making him a super soldier like Cap, trying to perfect the early imperfect version of the serum that was given to Red Skull. And it worked. The twin characters in the credits scene are Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch (comic names), mutants in the comics, associated with the X-Men, but at this time the X-Men and some associated characters were owned by Fox, not Disney, which inlcudes not being able to use the word mutant. But Disney could still use those two characters because they’re also associated with the Avengers, as long as they’re not classified as mutants. So here they’re “enhanced” after Hydra experimented on them with Loki’s scepter. If you watch X Men, there’s a different version of Quicksilver who is a mutant. Disney recently acquired Fox, so we should be seeing X Men and mutants in the MCU in the future That wasn’t the aether but it does look very similar, so that’s an understandable assumption. That’s just her power.
The device that Nick used to dig the hole was invented by Leopold Fitz on the show Agents of Shield, it was running in parallel to the movies - telling additional stories linked to the main film stories - for the first few years after Avengers. Shield also had a major hand in the ending of Avengers: Age of Ultron - but we'll get to that later. The rebuild of Shield mostly happens on the show.
'The Winter Soldier' really stands out among the Marvel Movies. Before this point, they had a formula; a sort of "villain of the week" thing. And by the time of Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World, it was getting a little... stale. It was a good formula, but it was still formulaic. They did have some amazing character moments, like Tony struggling with PTSD in Iron Man 3, and for the most part the writing was absolutely inspired (I do not need to talk about 'The Avengers'; that movie raised the bar for all movies that came after it) ... but the overall movie was still very much a tightly bound formula. 'The Winter Soldier' shook that formula up. Not only does it call back old enemies and provide excellent character moments (all the stuff we've grown to love from Marvel movies), more importantly it changes the genre: this isn't just a superhero movie, this is an action-thriller. It's like a spy movie. It's still got that lovely Marvel comic book heroism, but one of the greatest enemies isn't just some big baddy that needs to be punched; it's something more visceral... something more primal: fear, doubt, confusion. And it doesn't just throw that in there at the last minute like a cheap plot contrivance; it's literally how the movie begins: a mission goes wrong because people are hiding things. The way the movie ends is by overcoming that enemy: the exposure and discovery of the truth. It's amazing on its own, and it is a far cry from the standard formula Marvel had up to that point. ... and that's how it's going to be from now on. The standard formula stopped working in Thor 2. Every movie that follows is going to feel fresh and new. And that might not always be a good thing (I loved 'Thor 3' even though I felt the tone was a bit too... well, you'll see) but it is undoubtedly FUN, and that's important. It'll keep you interested and engaged and munching that popcorn all the way to the end. Some people criticized Harry Potter for this. I say... something doesn't need to be deep in order for it to be good. Sometimes it can just be a whole lot of fun. And the Marvel Cinematic Universe... does put a smile on my face.
Was this the Russo brothers first movie w the MCU? If so they did an amazing job, though they can do no wrong w me after the Community paintball episodes.
I could hear people audibly gasp when Bucky is revealed as the Winter Soldier. Cant wait for you to watch the next movie with the dance off to save the galaxy
Most fans are wrong about Thor: Dark World being that bad (it’s actually my favorite Thor film), but the rabid majority ARE correct that Captain America: Winter Soldier is one of the best. It easily makes the top three on my list.
There were a lot of good things about Thor: The Dark World... sadly, the villain was not one of them. I think that's why the movie doesn't get ranked as highly as the rest. Most of the other villains oozed charisma or had just the right amount of campiness... but Malekith? ... eh. He was just.. there. Underused, underdeveloped, he sent a minion to do his dirty work for most of it, so he didn't even go toe to toe with Thor until the end... and by this point in the MCU, we were exploring Thor's character growth and his relationship with Frigga, Loki, and Jane. There just wasn't enough room in the narrative to flesh out the villain, so without that charisma, without that campiness, to make him stand out... in hindsight, he felt like he was barely there.
When I'm having a bad day, (I too suffer from extreme depression) I turn you on and it lifts my mood. Thank you! I love you and your take on some really great movies.
FYI, the character introduced in the post-credit scene is NOT using the Aether. That character just has an ability that happens to be visualized using the same color.
"Don't worry we won't spoil things" *Gives information that what is being told to the audience at this time is not true, but won't be revealed until later*. Good job.
No Aether, but close. :) It's fun to see reactions to that last scene; it's easy to tell old school Marvel fans from the newbs. The former know _exactly_ who those two are on sight.
@@Logan_Baron I specifically left out any details beyond the fact that Ashleigh's interpretation of what was happening was off. I didn't even give the character's name!
Winter soldier is i think my favorite out of the mcu. I went in with little expectation with no idea how they were going to make cap relevant to modern day. The hydra twist melted my mind.
Still one of the best MCU movies. Great plot, good performances, great chemistry between actors, excellent fight choreography, Sundance Kid as the villain.
"Then finish it. Because I'm with you . . . . to the end of the line." IF that doesn't get you right in the FEELS, you might want to check your pulse! (because you might NOT HAVE a heart)
I live watching people discovering the MCU. To see someone excited for where Falcon goes, knowing what I know now, just makes me excited to see what she thinks once she gets there.
I was just about to say that Ashley was terrible at recognizing faces when she didn't realize the Winter Soldier was Bucky. Then immediately after, she recognizes Colbie Smulders.
Waiting for Ant Man. I know it's not necessarily everyone's top 5, but I actually love the movie. The "hump" movie for me was Capt. Marvel, not for what some might think, but because I felt the writing was lackluster, and it just didn't feel as well put together as the other movies. Just my opinion, though. Ashleigh, keep going! You're in for so many treats. You know, after the movies come...the television series'! lol
Captian Marvel's worst sin was just being SO BORING! They made a Mary Sue with NO weaknesses and even had her telling the main villain in the end that he was in no way threatening to her. Noone wants to see a main character with no flaws up against a villain with no power whatsoever. The 90's nostalgia couldn't save the movie at all. Bland all around :/.
@@Akihito007 So... the fact that she was part of an imperialist military that was hunting down & killing innocent refugees isn't a flaw? Carol's storyline actually has a lot in common with Bucky's yet I've never seen anyone complain that Bucky is a Mary Stu. Wonder why.
@Vadalia Because the actor for Bucky can actually act while Brie Larson can't lol. Because Bucky wasn't written as an invincible character with no physical or personal flaws but has to live with the guilt of remembering all of the people he was forced to murder. Captain Mavel's worst "trama" was being told as a kid that she couldn't play baseball because she was "a girl". Captain Marvel was INCREDIBLY BORING while Winter Soldier and Civil War were some of the BEST MCU movies in the entire franchise.
Winter Soldier is my Number one. Edge of your seat amazing movie. Nat and Cap are a great non romantic team which never happens in movies. She is amazing in this Movie and deserved her own film sooner then they gave her one. Robert Redford (The main villain) Is a fantastic actor and if you start on his Movies the Rabbit Hole will go on forever . Start with Three Days of the Condor, Then Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting , are three of his best.
Remember when he was in _Indecent Proposal_ in 1993 and everyone went "Ewwwww! He's OLD!" Well, here he is in his 80's and still rocking it! (BTW, it was kinda the point of that movie- an old rich man hitting on a woman about half his age) Actually. Hey Ashleigh! Another contender for your future ex-husband?
Supposedly they tried to cast Redford because of Three Days of the Condor. Yet another legendary actor Ashleigh never heard of. Sigh. Myself, I liked Barefoot in the Park.
I love the double meaning of: Winter Soldier. The obvious meaning is to Bucky, whom the Soviets recovered and turned into a cybernetic-enhanced Super Soldier. He is now called The Winter Soldier as his code-name. The other meaning has to do with American history. During the American War for Independence (Revolutionary War), most of the fighting took place from Spring to Autumn. As such, many soldiers would desert their units during the coldest months. There were a few, though, who would remain even when things were at their most bleak. They were Winter Soldiers: the true-patriots and ones General Washington could always count on - because they’d be there ‘til the end. In this sense, Steve is also a Winter Soldier. This movie is all about the confrontation between two Winter Soldiers.
You said it so I didn't have to, I'll add to round out, the poet Thomas Paine referred to the Summer Soldier, who was there when things were going well. The military equivalent of a Fair Weather Friend.
SOOOOO excited that you are doing "Better Off Dead"!!!!!!! One of the classic mid-80s comedies. I hope you enjoy it. Now we need to get "Real Genius" & "Top Secret!" in there as well.
I absolutely LOVE watching the MCU with you! I don't watch any other movie reactors, but I'm guessing no one else is as entertaining. I see others comment that you are the best, and your fans can't be wrong. I also love that you continue only watching one per month. Stretch it out! The anticipation and the excitement builds and makes it all that much better. We spent 11 years watching them just to get through phases 1-3, you spending 2-3 to get through them is a totally doable schedule. My only wish is that you could watch Ant-Man and the Wasp BEFORE Avengers: Infinity War, so you could then watch A: IW and Avengers: Endgame back to back, and maybe even in the same day. Or at least the same week. I'm sure most won't agree with me, and that's totally fine, and they're probably right. I'm super glad you're watching the rest of the movies in release order like we did, that's just my one exception. And yes, Robert Redford could totally get it, especially back in the day! My all-time favorite movie with him is The Sting, with the also amazing Paul Newman. They did several movies together, all great, but this was #1 for me. It's actually probably in my top 20 movies of all time. I know others have mentioned it, so I hope it winds up on your schedule in the next couple years. (I know you have a lot on your list!) Keep up the great work, Ashleigh!
No, Ant-Man and The Waps gives away too much about what happens in Infinity War, she cannot watch it first... Plus, Captain Marvel is also btween Infinity War and Endgame...
The loss of purpose is a common thing among Vets, especially those who have been deployed to combat zones. It can be hard to pick up your pack and move forward when you have no place to go.
Looking at the release list, momentum is building and it’s gonna get harder to wait between movies! You could always have a Millennial Marvel Movie Marathon Monday and watch two back to back or a real marathon and just watch until you have to stop. We would be really excited for something like that. There might be one or two movies that aren’t better than the previous one but this is where it really starts to get good. The new characters start fitting in really well and the old characters start feeling like your old friends coming back for a visit. And remember it gets better as you go along so when you get to Endgame which is almost at the end of Phase 4, just keep going. The next phase (5) is set as a series of shows but are just as good as the movies. Some of the series shows are even better than some of the phase 1-4 movies. Watch all the series shows. Don’t skip anything because they do eventually all tie together. You will find yourself constantly saying “that’s the guy from ___ movie” or “that’s why ___ said ___ in Thor/Guardians/etc…”. They all tie together beautifully! I am so excited for you to continue with the marvel movies. When my son was on spring break last year we started at the beginning and decided to have a marvel marathon but chronologically instead of by release date so it was Captain America: The First Avenger Captain Marvel Iron Man Etc…. And we had a blast. Just me, him, some popcorn and one marvel movie after another. Just looking forward to you getting to the next movie. You will be getting a lot of comments from now on saying “this is my fav marvel movie” and believe me when I say if you think you have seen the best one yet…just wait…I guarantee there is always an even better one coming up! I promise! If you loved the ones you already saw, you will really love the ones coming up in the future! Next is Guardians of the Galaxy. This one took everyone by surprise. No one could figure out why they picked this comic to bring to the screen but it wasn’t by random chance. Remember…they all connect somehow in the next movies. They all have the same charm. This is my personal favorite marvel movie.at the time it was released, it was the best action movie I had seen in quite awhile. I forgot how much I enjoyed this one. Glad to see it again.
May seem like a dick move, but "on your left" is actually proper running etiquette. I'm an active runner and whenever I get that feeling of someone coming up on my left, I think "don't you say it" in my head. Just like traffic, faster runners are to the left.

You are absolutely priceless to watch, but this reaction is the absolute most wonderful and tremendous reaction you have had so far. Thank you for being you. Thank you for your candor, fun spirit, and positively splendid reactions! You have already made 2022 better!
One thing that is fun about the MCU is how they use very minor characters from the comics in such a way that a general audience doesn't notice. You don't feel like you're missing anything. And even better, they take really badly done characters from the comics and actually make them look good. Like Batroc in this one. He is an absolute joke in the comics but he's a valid villain here. It's a really nice extra layer.
What bothers me is that Cap's shield can take a full blow from Mjolnir, yet Batroc pushes Cap back with just kicks. I know the guy playing Batroc is a world champion savate expert, but it's simple physics. The shield has kept Cap safe from Thor's hammer, machine gun fire, and sudden deceleration by absorbing the blow. Yet he feels a _kick!?_
Just wanted to remind you that Alexander Pierce (bad guy) played by Robert Redford (LEGEND OF A STAR) was also in the movie "Sneakers" (you watched about 8 months ago), he played Bishop. Redford has 2 Academy Awards and 7 Golden Globes with more than 60 movies under his belt, PLUS he's directed movies and is a producer of movies. I hope you watch more of his movies. Some of my favorites are..."Sneakers" which you've seen, #1FAV "Jeremiah Johnson", "Out Of Africa" (with Meryl Streep), "Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid" (with Paul Newman), "The Sting"...OMG...I have too many favorites. I just hope you're able to get into more classics.
Woo! We've officially hit the sweet spot for Marvel. If you thought they've been great up until now, just you wait! I am loving this series. I watched these movies as they came out, but there are some that it's been so long since I've rewatched them, that I am loving getting to watch them with you! Love it!
You are one of the best reactors on the Internet, Ashleigh, because you allow yourself to get fully invested in the concept (notice I didn’t say “movie”) and characters, and aren’t afraid to go ‘all in’ with your emotions. It feels like ‘you are us’ and help make this a group experience just like when we see these movies in a crowded room full of strangers at a theater. Keep on doin’ what you are doin’. I, for one, will continue to enjoy the ride.
I loved your reaction to the Winter Soldier's identity. I am a fan of the comics, so the twist was obvious to me. This is still one of my favourite Marvel movies though. Just wait until you get to the third Captain America movie. Whoof!
Just a note. When you say about Sam Wilson "now that he's lost his wings he's just an average human", that's not exactly true. Early in the movie, he mentions he was in Pararescue. That's Air Force Special forces. So, he's not really "average". Still human though, yes. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Air_Force_Pararescue
@@JoshuaY83 the para rescue guys are the elite of the elite. (They rescue special forces operators in the worst of situations) Ask any special forces soldier)
Did you see it there first? I have yet to get a testimonial from someone who caught the reveal there first, and how that affected their viewing of THIS movie.
You reviewed Pulp Fiction with Samuel L. Jackson. Remember the Scripture he kept quoting (it isn't real, so don't grab your Bible)? And then look at the inscription on Nick Fury's headstone. One of the great Easter Eggs.
The quote from the Bible is real, but Tarantino changed it up. It reads: I will carry out great vengeance on them and punish them in my wrath. Then they will know that I am the LORD, when I take vengeance on them.’ ”
I'm very happy to see someone else who ranks Thor so highly. :) It's a great movie! I do rank Winter Soldier ahead of it but Thor is still very, very high on my list.
There’s so much to unpack from this film and it very much is a continuation of what started with the first one. I’m so glad you appreciate the levels of storytelling they have accomplished. Cheers!😃
So this was a moment in Marvel where there was a parallel storyline in the TV show "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D" that ran with the movies. Some of the SHIELD/Hydra story is told and expanded in the TV show during that season's arc, including what the first after credits scene is about. Overall, I'm glad they decoupled the series, but in some ways it was really cool where they could expand the lore and finish out story arcs that may not have gotten the treatment time they needed in the movies. Yay. Better Off Dead! Such a good Christmas movie! Thank you for this one as always!
I missed your reaction to Steve giving up fighting Bucky and telling him if he needs to kill him to do it because he's with him to the end of the line.
Trust me Ashleigh, your rankings will change several times. mine have over the years. for example The First Captain America movie for a long time was lower on my list for years, but after more viewings its probably a top 10 movie for me now.
I've been doing a re-watch with friends of all of the MCU movies and TV series (plus Daredevil... eventually). Everyone has their own favorites and that's ok. I'm not sure exactly where I rank "The Winter Soldier". Before Avengers: Infinity war, it was my favorite, bar none, with Avengers a close second. And I finally decided to not try to rank them. Basically, this is a movie that I love, and I'll rank all movies that I love equally. There's something painful about trying to put one movie/book/graphic novel/etc. ahead of another when you love them both (at least for me). So let's just say that I consider this movie to be top tier and not worry about which is better than the other.
Ashleigh, Thank you. I find so much joy in your videos. I am one of those weirdos that loves re-watching movies with people that have never seen them so see their joy in stuff that brought me joy. So keep up the amazing work, and PLEASE continue watching all these silly "Boy Movies" (as my wife calls them).
I LOVE this movie 😀 I can't wait till you get to Guardians Of The Galaxy - So good and and so fun. I can't believe you're halfway through Phase 2 already.
I love your reactions. Now that you have been watching Phase 2 MCU movies, You have the backstory to enjoy the ABC shows : Agents of SHIELD [7 seasons, 136 episodes] (started after Iron Man 3), and Agent Carter [2 seasons, 18 episodes] (season one before Endgame, season 2 before seasons 6&7 of Agents of SHIELD). This will give you a wider perspective on the organizations and major players. Keep it as your back burner project, now that the prelude is known. :)

Love your review of this movie is so great. The girl in the post credit scene is Elizabeth Olsen who is the Olsen twins younger sister. She is Wanda and that is all I'm saying. No spoilers from me.
A guy who appreciates his fans.
awww!
I love this! He seems really cool.
That makes me tear up a bit. What a sweet thing to do!
He and Keanu should work together, that would be an awesome set!
I was thrilled that both Robert Redford & Ben Kingsly got into the MCU...One of my favorite films, "Sneakers" has them in it together.
@@jean-paulaudette9246 it's a wonderful film; one of my all-time favorites!
@@mkang8782 Oh yes, seeing Redford as a bad guy is quite the jolt.

Sebastian Stan is simply amazing in this. He manages evil bad ass to tortured soul and little boy lost while saying nothing. Love this movie
And here I am...after all these years since this movie, learning something new. Gary made it into the MCU.
Oh my gosh, I never realized that it was Gary Sinise! You're right, that is fantastic!
@@blackkatt777 Same. TIL
Cool story!
Speaking as the son of a veteran, Gary Sinise is a freaking national treasure.
I remember bursting out laughing when Natasha said, "Shall we play a game?" - and everyone else in the cinema was quiet and looking at me funny...
Haha old reference!
Such a Gen X reference that's lost on Millenials and Gen Z! (For those of you still confused, it's a reference to the 1983 Matthew Broderick movie WAR GAMES, where a big government computer almost accidentally starts World War III.... check it out! It's actually pretty good!)
that happened to me in nwh when norman said the famous scientist line😩
Its nitpicky, but the line is actually, "Would you like to play a game?"
@@MGower4465 No, Natasha's quoting it right.
The Winter Solider remains my #1 MCU film. It’s near perfect as an isolated film and is an important piece of the whole MCU timeline.
And filled with foreshadowing. Plus the first season of AOS is a fun companion watch.
You're right, it's the best one!
For me it's weird, i know in my brain that this movie is probably one of, if not the best, films in the mcu, and yet i still favour other ones bc they just resonate w me more idk why
It's my favorite MCU film as well, and it's all because of the political intrigue going on. Bucky being prime eye candy is a plus too.
And the fact that Steve even when he couldnt been with Peggy,, she was the one tha he want, Natasha and Cap have great chimstry because Chris and Scarlet have a great chimistry, but a realitionsip betwen them wouldnt work, and that why later they put Natasha wit other
I disagree about Steve and Natasha.
I would prefer Steve/Natasha over the actually shoehorned relationships they were put in.
Natasha has this thing where she becomes whoever she needs to be. Each relationship is different and she chooses the appropriate dynamic to always have an edge.
It's subtle, but it's there throughout. She even states it at one point, I think it's even in this movie.
You mean how they shoehorned Natasha and Bruce? Ha
“Ooh, I can’t wait for her story, very excited about her story!”
Me: *stares disparagingly at Marvel* yeeeah, can’t wait
*flails*
Yes, I am a huge Bucky fan. :D
Agreeing so much with this
Just wanted to say, Captain America is more than just a guy with a shield. Just like Falcon is more than just a guy with a wingsuit. Taking those things away from them may slow them down, but that's definitely not all they got.
Nah, he's just a kid from Brooklyn. ;)
It's like why we had Iron Man 3 dedicated to showing us that Tony Stark is a superhero whether he's in the suit or not. Captain America is ALWAYS Captain America. The shield is just a special weapon.
Ahh, let's just tell her that Bucky and cap have super strength from a serum.
@@ianburns1167 "Genius, Billionaire, Playboy, Philanthropist." - Tony Stark

1... Still ridiculously hot.
2... I want her to be to MI:13 what Nick Fury is to the Avengers (give me a Jenny Agutter "I'm putting a team together" scene at the end of the Blade movie please!)
This is, IMO, STILL the best MCU film. The most 'gown-up', if you will. And solidified Captain America as a genuine badass.
This is certainly a movie you could have made without the super-hero stuff as a standard action movie. The whole thing would have worked as a James Bond or Mission Impossible plot with a couple tweaks here and there.
It’s right there at the top with Guardians (which is next for Ashleigh).
@@ChristieWryte The trailer for that movie was Sheer. Genius. Yes, we've got a raccoon with a machine gun, and you're going to love it.
@@ChristieWryte To this day, having James Gunn make Guardians of the Galaxy was definitely one of their best decisions.
Would love for Booster Gold to show up in a movie
Wow :-)

My favorite line in the movie: "This is not freedom. This is fear." You tell him cap!

Fun fact, Cap's catch up list is different in every country.
"How did the company come up with so many villains for every movie?" It's called 80+ years of comic book history. Also, at the end, they didn't have the Ether, they only have the Scepter. her powers being red is a reference to her characters comic book name, not any sort of connection to the Ether.
It's not that clear cut. The Aether may be red because they were planning ahead.
@@Mansplainer2099-jy8ps
It is that clear cut.
@@Mansplainer2099-jy8ps
Their supposedly mythical levels of foresight and planning break down completely when you realise that her powers are not from the Aether but all her own, amplified by Loki's Sceptre.
LONG POST, Sorry ahead of time:
So this movie is my favorite in the MCU (as shown by my profile avatar to the left) and Cap is my favorite character and movie series in it.
Yes that is the staff loki used in the avengers movie.
This is the movie that kicks marvel into high gear so to speak. there is nothing but greatness from here on out...mostly. there are a few eh movies but none have been regarded as lowly as Thor 2 and Hulk. I cannot wait for naked gun 2. I am pumped!

Sam has nieces. He's literally Uncle Sam.
Oh, PLEASE get Beans a Cap Costume! lol

Your explanation about Thor: The Dark World being just a placeholder to introduce the Ether is pretty much spot-on, and why people rank it low on the list of MCU movies. It's not a bad movie on its own, but compared to nearly all other MCU movies, it's pretty lackluster.
The post-credit scene is the most important scene of the movie. That's saying something.
@@Grimlock1979 Yea, pretty much. It's kind of nasty to say, but the whole movie was basically "Here's a macguffin. It's necessary for the future", rather than being much of a worthwhile movie for its own sake.

Honestly, the idea that ANYONE woul spoil you in insane to me. My absolute favorite part is waiting for you to respond to the twists and surprises - it's as close to getting to rewatch them for the first time as I feel like anyone can get. LOVE this series so much!!
Regarding the actor playing the main villain, Betty White said, "My answer to anything under the sun, like, 'What have you not done in the business that you've always wanted to do?' is: 'Robert Redford.' "
Ashleigh needs to watch some Redford films: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, 3 Days of the Condor, or (if she both wants to cry and see a very young Scarlett Johanson) The Horse Whisperer.
Don't forget "The Sting" - another great Redford / Newman film.
The Natural is one of my faves. So many great Redford films. To borrow an Ashleigh phrase: REDFORD CAN GET IT.
Barefoot in the Park is fun.
And upon hearing Betty White's passing, Redford admitted that he, too, had a crush on Betty White.

Disney recently acquired Fox, so we should be seeing X Men and mutants in the MCU in the future
That wasn’t the aether but it does look very similar, so that’s an understandable assumption. That’s just her power.
Yes
That end comment tho....lol. I agree, a lot, Winter Soldier really stood out, and imo, is one of the most rewatchable of Marvel movies for me.
Definitely agree!
It’s not that it’s a bad movie; it’s just the least good MCU movie. I would still give it a B, but most others are in the A to A+ range.
They're not wrong, their opinion just differs from yours. Its not the worst Marvel movie for me, but its in the bottom 3 or 4 for sure.
I loved Thor Ragnorak. Thor and Loki’s interactions together are priceless. Can’t wait for love and thunder.
I just came across you're channel. I want you to know that what you said about the viewers is twofold. We keep you going and you keep others going.
Following her order, her next Marvel review will be "Guardians of the Galaxy". My favorite! I can't wait.
It's always fun when one encounters the work of James Gunn for the first time!
Absolutely love The Guardians!
@@EdSigma Wonder what she'd think of Slither...
Yes!! Absolutely love the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. They are in my top 5 MCU movies!
@@christopherb501 Good question.
Yeah, but she is in the same neighborhood (At least in the MCU reality).
"Don't worry we won't spoil things"
*Gives information that what is being told to the audience at this time is not true, but won't be revealed until later*. Good job.
No Aether, but close. :)
It's fun to see reactions to that last scene; it's easy to tell old school Marvel fans from the newbs.
Just wanted to let you know you're not alone in loving Ant Man. The family dynamic of that movie is my favorite.
"Ant Man" is a great MCU movie.
"He's great to look at."
As far as I'm concerned, that's America's ass.
*salutes*
(BTW, it was kinda the point of that movie- an old rich man hitting on a woman about half his age)
Actually. Hey Ashleigh! Another contender for your future ex-husband?
The Sting. speaking of a movie with a lot of moving parts......
Supposedly they tried to cast Redford because of Three Days of the Condor.
Yet another legendary actor Ashleigh never heard of. Sigh.
Myself, I liked Barefoot in the Park.
I am impressed that Ashleigh has the foresight, vision if you will, to recognize the heroism JARVIS possesses.
"I understood that reference."
Well dang! Didn't know that, love this even more.
(I know you have a lot on your list!)
Keep up the great work, Ashleigh!
Chloe, do give JustSummReactions a try. Emily and Matthew are a hoot to watch. May I suggest trying their reaction to Top Secret as a starting point.
sebscreen is also a really good reactor he posts mcu reactions every week!
The Sting is so good, I can watch it any amount of times and it still holds up!
No, Ant-Man and The Waps gives away too much about what happens in Infinity War, she cannot watch it first... Plus, Captain Marvel is also btween Infinity War and Endgame...
@@jaxonrenick5536 my favorite reaction of theirs is Airplane!
The loss of purpose is a common thing among Vets, especially those who have been deployed to combat zones. It can be hard to pick up your pack and move forward when you have no place to go.
"Purpose" is a myth, it never exists outside the imagination. We humans are just egomaniacs that way.
Oh man I really hope these go up more often lol, marvel is literally never ending !!! They Will give you content forever
Well they only have 60 years of stories
'I wouldn't bish slap a man with a metal arm' - this made me giggle :D
Def the best Marvel movie! ♥
When my son was on spring break last year we started at the beginning and decided to have a marvel marathon but chronologically instead of by release date so it was
Captain America: The First Avenger
Captain Marvel
Iron Man
Etc….
They are big and explosive but also heartwarming and hilarious. Can’t wait for the next one! Have a great day! Remember we all love you! ❤️
In the very least, she should do such a marathon if she tackles a show, at least the Disney+ ones.
This is my personal favorite marvel movie.at the time it was released, it was the best action movie I had seen in quite awhile. I forgot how much I enjoyed this one. Glad to see it again.
One of the best MCU movies. The one that convinced us that they'll get the rest of them right for the most part.
As much as I love you diving into the MCU I am so excited for Better off Dead. Absolute classic
May seem like a dick move, but "on your left" is actually proper running etiquette. I'm an active runner and whenever I get that feeling of someone coming up on my left, I think "don't you say it" in my head. Just like traffic, faster runners are to the left.
I know its irksome. That's why I say in the mall, the walmart, I even say it to my coworker with the gout.

I noticed Stilt-Man's outfit in the Daredevil series. :)
Same with Grills in Hawkeye show.
Batroc was really cool in Gwenpool, but that's the exception rather than the norm
Well said!
Love it!
😂 I don’t think she’s ever going to finish the MCU but as long as she tries I’m gonna keep on watching it
She will, never ending content! 😆
Air Force Special Forces.......hahahahahahahah.....that's an oxymoron.
@@JoshuaY83 the para rescue guys are the elite of the elite. (They rescue special forces operators in the worst of situations) Ask any special forces soldier)

Ashleigh will never know how stressful it was watching this HYDRA twist play out in real-time on Agents of SHIELD!
Then they will know that I am the LORD, when I take vengeance on them.’ ”
I remember going to a museum and they had a recreation of a 1970s living room. I suddenly felt very very old.
Guardians of the Galaxy is next and it is so much fun with one of the best soundtracks ever.
Still my fav MCU movie, of course I loved the MCU up to that point but that movie really made me realize how amazing the MCU could be
Yep, it’s great. I imagine it’s a nightmare for reactors though, trying to get around all that copyrighted music.
Yes, that’s why Ashley needs to watch the original Footloose before this one.
Your reactions are incredible lol... remember this movie, it'll be relevant for YEARS.
Reuniting with Peggy and Bucky in the way he did had to be a real heartbreak for Steve...he's got new emotional trauma to deal with here too.
I know she's a different generation, but it still blows my mind when someone doesn't recognize Robert Redford.
I'm very happy to see someone else who ranks Thor so highly. :) It's a great movie! I do rank Winter Soldier ahead of it but Thor is still very, very high on my list.
I loved the comedy in Thor, Chris Hemsworth is great!
Trust me Ashleigh, your rankings will change several times. mine have over the years. for example The First Captain America movie for a long time was lower on my list for years, but after more viewings its probably a top 10 movie for me now.
i love the First Avenger, my only issue with it is i would of loved to see a lot more of Cap during the war rather than a montage.
your tastes have matured. ;)
Wait, did she say "Better Off Dead" at the end? I cherish that film and still have it on VHS.
The "Daredevil" series is so well done.
Daredevil is the best Marvel show
Ashleigh, Thank you. I find so much joy in your videos. I am one of those weirdos that loves re-watching movies with people that have never seen them so see their joy in stuff that brought me joy. I LOVE this movie 😀 I can't wait till you get to Guardians Of The Galaxy - So good and and so fun. I can't believe you're halfway through Phase 2 already.
I love your reactions.
