Nice review, and great pack! I was looking at packs as well. This one crossed my mind. I settled on Frost River north bay. Traditional yet modern. Has zippers, and i got it in black waxed canvas. Made in USA with Redwing leather accents. $150 cheaper than the imported Filson. These days, Filson relies on heritage to upcharge prices. These days, Filson are sold at yuppy "outdoor" stores whose clients just want expensive stuff to look the part. I remember a few years back, they tried to get into the watch game. They failed miserably because nobody wanted a $1000 Filson branded quartz watch that cost $20 to make.
I'm inspired by the traditional take of this backpack. In the world where everyone's looking for "high tech" material, waterproof, ultra-lightweight and tons of compartment or tech features..... .... ... how about we just go back to a simple backpack. Nothing more than we don't need. Enough for daily use. Less is more.
Love it! Looking forward to another review. I have the original briefcase and I love the style and using it for work but I have been wanting to purchase the journeyman to add to my collection.
The heritage is heavier for sure. If that doesn't concern you, you can go wrong. Journeyman is more of a causal use backpack (EDC). Heritage is more padded, a bit bulkier, but will certainly last a lifetime or two. 😁
ETSY store. They use Horween full-grain leather when I purchased it. If you want beautiful patina, you should consider Horween leather. www.etsy.com/shop/olpr
AwlandLeaf from Etsy also makes a Horween Table Mat. www.etsy.com/listing/749657801/desk-pad-in-horween-dublin-english-tan It's getting rarer to find it. So, get it before it's no longer available.
Absolutely different. Apple vs orange. Filson Journeyman is more of a causal, EDC backpack. Goruck GR1 is more heavy-duty. It's meant to carry substantially more stuff.
I hope the flap cover of the front pocket will be bigger to cover more the opening of the pocket and the closure would be the same as the leather with snap of the main flap cover.
Love your channel. Thoughtful and informative. Your videos on the Goruck bullet SINGLEHANDEDLY swayed me into purchasing my first Goruck bullet. Do you own any Recycled Firefighter packs and if so are you planning on doing a video? Thanks for the content and take care!
Thanks! I don't have RFF packs. The reason I own Goruck and Filson between of their lifetime warranty and resale values. As far as I know RFF don't have lifetime warranty and their resale values are... not that great. With the Made-In-USA Goruck (or Filson) bags, you can comfortably buy them in the 2nd hand market (e.g. FB, EBay). Paid a little less. However, over time, the price may actually increase (appreciate in value) because stuff no longer Made-In-USA as it used to be. We all crave for USA made products.
Wanted to love this bag but stitching on top snap started coming undone within 4 weeks of light daily use. Repair process involves sending in an email, waiting for a response and process could take 7 weeks all told. Disappointing
My philosophy is: Build a relationship with it. By using it, fixing it, patching it, making it unique and totally different from other packs. That's the goal.
This backpack could have been perfect if the flap of the front pocket were big enough to cover the top edge of the pocket completely. Additionally, to make it more secure against theft, the locking mechanism should have been made more robust and capable of being padlocked.

I have been looking at north bay pack and this filson. How do you like north bay pack? Any regrets?
@lware1 it's a great pack, but honestly nothing that a $50 jansport can't do. The Frost River is just cool because it makes you feel "cool."
I still love it. The older it gets, the cooler it looks. When it comes to Filson, I like it OLD!! 😆
Love it in the green. I have a Filson x Brooks in Tan but might need to get a green swell.
Excellent Detailed Review!
I love your passion in this! literally makes me want to buy one asap haha

I think the Journeyman is a very timeline looking backpack. The older it gets, the cooler it looks. So, yes, get yours and start the patina journey!
Great review. I got the tan one today!
Good choice!
This or Goruck GR1 Heritage? I'm a small guy at 5'4". Saw you put up videos on both

Who makes the desk pad? Need a new one and the patina on yours is pretty nice.

Hope it helps!
Did you re-wax the canvas? How did you stiffen it again?
No, I didn't re-wax. It's how it ages over time. Age it by using it daily.
Do you love this bag Moore then the GR1 heritage rucksack?
I have to say YES. Filson Journeyman is significantly lighter in weight. I find it more comfortable to carry.
Hello, where is that desk pad from?

How does this compare to the goruck gr1 heritage?
Absolutely different. Apple vs orange. Filson Journeyman is more of a causal, EDC backpack. Goruck GR1 is more heavy-duty. It's meant to carry substantially more stuff.
Love it

I have a new RFF in red for sale for almost 1/2 the cost of new if your interested. Cheers.

Nice. Is it Made in USA though?
@@joekkl nope
