- Today we are visiting the home of Ralph Wampler, owner of Hara Arena. This huge abandoned house features some eccentric design features such as shag carpet, 2 party rooms, and 5 of the wildest bathroom designs we have ever seen.

That"ugly wallpaper" was the height of fashion back in the day, and not at all cheap, especially the foiled paper in the first bath. Frankly I find today's minimalism, "clean" lines, and open concepts to be cold and unwelcoming.
By the way, I learned to drive in the Hara Arena parking lot. I grew up in Brookville, and I actually remember the Hara Arena being built back when I was a kid.

You are correct saying that back in that era this wallpaper and decor was the height of fashion. My Great Grandparents had this style when I was a boy in the early sixties. I also agree that some of todays decoration is in my opinion, quite boring, and basically tasteless. Nothing to it. I enjoy watching these type videos mostly because they take you back in time to a completely different generation of people. Thats why I probably like the old classic tv channels as well. The old movies and weekly programs from say, the late 50s and 60s era weren't animated by computers. The backgrounds were largely authentic, with real furniture, clocks, lamps, etc. The old films were believable I guess because everything looked real. Seeing videos of these abandoned houses are also depressing because there is alot of history and memories being lost. Have never understood why relatives let these places rot away? Old family photos and records can not be replaced. Once they're gone they're gone.
the chrome and black wallpaper is AMAZING! and I grew up in Ohio. born in 1971. and that type of wallpaper was common! and mirror tiles too!

I lived in this house. They were my step grandparents. I use to walk to Hara and work. Sad to see the house in this state. Both grandparents have died 😢

I lived up the road in Springfield when I was a kid. I saw Black Sabbath the Rolling Stones and many others up at the Arena. Sad part is all of those tickets combined probably would not add up to enough money to go see some no talent hack lip sink there concert these days. Moved out of Springfield in 1985. My last show I saw at Hara was AC/DC for thirteen bucks. No wonder half the kids I see these days are pissed off. They cant even go see a good band without getting ripped off. Not to mention I saw all of these legends play in a 5500 seat venue. There wasn't really any bad seats. If you still see any of the family tell them I said thanks. I never met them but will always remember them. In that way they are just like the Rolling Stones

Yes. I think sometimes people go with decorators ideas and it really is overpowering. I don’t find the wallpaper or the paint hideous even though it isn’t my choice. The last bathroom with the primary colors that he criticized is probably too much color for people who want white cabinets, white or pale gray walls and chrome fixtures. People choose things that they enjoy and who cares what guests think.

My parents built their house in the mid 60s and my mom "updated" through the 90s. I built a home in 1992 and at that time wall paper, dark maroon and blue walls were very common. This house looks like a mix of 70s, 80s, and 90s with a few failed attempts to be unique. Interesting.
Ha! Yep, I bought a house in 1993, and all my walls were navy blue, dark green, and maroon, lol.
I used to work with his grandson. Crazy to see this place that he's told me about and know that that's where he spent time as a child. Cool stuff.

In the 80s from our hair clothes makeup, it was bad and it fell over into home decor.

The mirror wallpaper in black and white is called foil wallpaper and is not easy to hang and was very expensive back in the seventies.
My Mom was a paper hanger back in the 70’s and worked with many decorators and contractors.
The decor was really top of the line back in the day.
My mom and dad built a custom tri-level home in 1981. It was professionally decorated in the "latest" colors. Rust colored sculptured carpet. The windows sported these truly awful orange and rust plaid floor length drapes. Rust, orange and harvest gold colored tree branches and leaves on foil wallpaper was in the dining room and kitchen. The newest high end harvest gold appliances graced the kitchen with oak cabinets and chocolate brown ceramic tile was on the floor. The master bath had blue tile and fixtures with blue and white clouds on foil wallpaper. There was a chrome and glass dining table with natural cane back chairs. When we look at old pictures now, we all laugh and say remember when the house looked like that? But at the time, mom was so proud to show it to people! Now we gag!

This is pretty cool. I live in Troy Ohio. I've been in the Hara arena for concerts and the gun and knife shows a few years back. I didn't even know that house was back there.
I live in Trotwood, have for close to 25 years, and I never knew this house existed!

@@cmmorris1969 Trotwood....is a suburb of Dayton, and it's where the house and Hara Arena used to sit. Hara's being torn down now.

I used to work at peffley Ford in Dayton. Used to go by Hara arena all the time. Say kiss there in 1991. I didn’t know the house was there either. If I remember correctly though there was a big area behind hara and just a few roads there
This house sat in the golf course that Hara had behind it. A small executive course that I played many times years ago.
That would be a beautiful house if it was remodeled.
I'd say late 80s early 90s. If it was 70s everything would be green and gold.
The place looks like it's in pretty good shape for having been visited by multiple people since it's been abandoned

I'm from Dayton.the tornado last year tore alot of Hara Arena up so they demolished it. It definitely was a Dayton landmark.I remember being a kid going to the circus there,concerts were there,and proms.Also the Bill Goodman gun and knife show.
I can still hear the "Bill Goodman, Gun and Knife Show!" Jingle in my head a couple times a year

Poor Teddy! The wallpaper! LOL! My Mom had some crazy wallpaper in our house! She taught me how to do it! And I made a pretty good living doing it, back in the 80's and 90's! Yeah I'm old! LMAO

That has to be the oddest and honestly the worst interior decorations I have ever seen. The upstairs game room with 3 different types of silver/black wall paper is just astounding.

Well put! I remember feeling so betrayed by that changeover ... going from exciting space-age geometrics to dried flower pods in antique milk bottles? Had we learned nothing? It seemed like such a devolution, a betrayal of the beautiful

Wallpaper overload. The black and white room, OMG😳. Who knew the house was back there. Didn't show the kitchen.
The kitchen was in the very beginning but it was pretty normal and all the appliances had been removed so I didn’t spend much time there. They didn’t want to scare people off when they first walked in 😜

I had a corner shower that was gold in my house in CO. Late ‘80’s vintage.
Late 60's my Mom and step-Dad were friends with the Wamplers. They would go to dinner parties at the house and go out for dances at the "Wampler Ball Arena". Naturally my Mom copies some of the wall paper trends silver foil with black felt designs (ugly).
as a child of the 70s, the chrome wall Very popular from 1974-78. this house screams disco opulence. in 1975 we would be awestruck at a house that awesome. dude in 1975 people aspired to have a house like that! I lived through the 70s and still dont know why it was so cool. it's the time of studio 54, I guess enough said.
I just found your Ohio videos. Just wonderful! Do you ever do a bit of research on the houses, the people that had them built, or the last family to abandon them? I always have a million questions! So so sad to see such craftsmanship gone. FYI - I loved the house behind Hara Arena.

Great rehab house. Basics look in good condition. Stripe a lot and paint and flooring would make this a nice house for a family with the right purchased price.
I drove through Dayton the morning after that tornado hit. It was sad to see the large swath that the tornado wiped out.
This is located in a fairly woodsy area of the city. The woodlands did a great job of disguising the area blight and keeping nicer nearby enclaves property values in check (nearby clayton homes sell briskly enough). But I've been told that a lot of area woodlands were wiped out by the tornadoes and that things just don't look good.
I love the colorful wallpaper and tiles. So much prettier than the endless white and gray of today. Also prefer carpet to that freezing cold tile that's everywhere now. Great house and video!
Those tiles in the two upstairs bathrooms were handmade Mexican tiles purchased from a vacation by Edna and Ralph before they began building the house.

What a nice explore.As a collector of 1970s to 90s tabloids and magazines and memorabilia I loved seeing all the stuff.
Looks like Disney threw up in some of those rooms and the shag carpet.
It's like they won the lottery and threw their money at 20 different decorators and said "go to town."
It's a beautiful home -- just needs some remodeling.
The curved shower: I'd say you're right on the money; if memory serves, brass & glass was considered chic from the mid-'70s through the early '80s as an alternative to the earlier minimalist/futuristic chrome & acrylic look that caught on a decade earlier. But it became a victim of its own popularity when every mass-produced lighting and cabinetry design ended up including a brass & glass option until, by the late '80s, no double-wide trailer home was complete without cheaply manufactured brass & glass light fixtures and matching dinette table.
People were crazy about Walltex™ wallpaper in those days. Every time they moved or redecorated, my Boomer parents and their siblings had a ritual of leafing through the giant book of wallpaper samples (I don't know if these are made anymore; it was literally a book, about a foot thick, each page of which was a square of wallpaper 16" to a side. It started out with demure white and beige pinstripes with repeating floral motifs, but as you went on, the tension mounted, and the patterns became bolder and more geometric. The wild, disorienting metallic prints in that attic game room were at the very back of the book, right before the full-size trompe-l'oueil forest scenes that made it seem like your dentist's waiting room was in the middle of a peaceful aspen grove or whatever.)
It was de-rigeur to paper over the lightswitch plate, an expert touch the moms and aunts would tend to, carefully matching the print along its width so that there would be no unpleasant visible gap or discontinuation and no unsightly surface could be left un-wallpapered to ruin the dècor: Their job was not done, and a house was not a home until everything, gloriously, was Walltex™, Walltex™, Walltex™, as far as the eye could see!
We bought a farm house on Westbrook Road just a few miles from Hara Arena and it had the same dang curved shower in the downstairs bathroom!
Grass paper was the most hideous idea in the history of decorating.
@@kristeelrod3367 Hara Arena and all the property on that land is being demolished as we speak. Began October 1st, 2020. It's pretty much gone.
I did understand that from watching several of the other video’s. It is clear building codes where lax in this area.
The house decor, wallpaper, paint, etc... would have been considered a top of the line home in the 1980"s.

Nice to have someone exploring around my neck of the woods. I've been to many concerts, a circus and hamventions at Hara. I never knew that the owners house was behind it. My best friend worked at Hara for a while and got to meet a lot of groups who played there. This was all back in the 80's
Likewise! I grew up two miles away on Shiloh Springs recalling like events in the 70's along with Dayton Gems Hockey. In the 60's Wampler and Muma's was the destination for fresh fruit and veggies.
Yes, we could hear 3 bands for 5 bucks! Of course we only made 85 cents an hour. Ted nugent, ac/ dc, blue oyster cult, zeppelin, etc. No one shoved and pushed. We were all stoned and mellow. Lol

Hara was the place to go to. I saw my first ever concert there back on July 5 1983. It was Def Leppard, Krokus and Gary Moore. That was just the beginning of my
many concerts there. I miss that place. Concerts were so much better back then. I never new about this house either. Thank you for sharing with us. Bring back memories.

I use to live in Englewood and worked at Shiloh Church. We had our Christmas Fairs at Hara Arena. I saw the Supremes perform at Hara Arena.

Total late 70s early 80s home . Parents have same cabinets. These people had some cash . Roof doesn't look that old . Great buy for someone.

Great video!! What a house!! Although wallpaper was the in thing at the time this place was over the top. Seems like the more eccentric the better for the homeowners. The bathroom where you showed the blue wallpaper under the existing leads me to believe that at one point this house had a lot of paneling. Paneling from the late 60’s and 70’s was covered up in the 80’s with wallpaper. It brightened up even the darkest rooms. That’s why people went crazy with it. My mom wallpapered almost every wall in the house but it was classic, not crazy like this house! I think these homeowners were trying to keep up with New York and L.A. styles of the times which we’re definitely over the top!! Poor Teddy Bear looks like he was won as a carnival prize!! The bigger the better with those as well during those years. Lol. Thanks for another great video!! Stay safe out there!! 😋
Thanks Tara! I agree there seem to be a remodel or redecoration at some point for some of the rooms. I wouldn’t be surprised if it had some paneling that they took down and instead of refinishing the walls they just wallpapered them. 😜

That curved gold shower was added recently. . . at least it was NOT part of the original design. What was originally there was a luxurious, free-standing claw foot tub. That large room on the first floor with the fireplace was the master bedroom. His and hers closets in the bathroom. There was a "sitting room" (that rivaled most main living rooms) in front of the fireplace. it truly was lovely in its day. That doll was a collectable China doll. I remember as a kid wanting to play with it but wasn't allowed because of its value. it was dressed really beautifully.

The "decadence" and grandiose palate of this house definitely screams 80s over the top decorating 😁. I had purple carpeting in my bedroom as a teen.....80s of course 🤷

I lived in Dayton area for twenty years and had no idea this was there. This house reminds me of the one I lived on as a teenager as far as the designs.

The wallpaper is on the funky side. But there are collectors out there that would put in the time to carefully take it down. I see rolls of antique paper at the antique shops with some hefty price tags on it.

My house was built in 1925. All original woodwork, I bought and installed wallpaper dating to the period of the house. So when looking oh and those were hardwood floors. So when looking at the interior of a house please take in mind the year it was built
I lived in Dayton for 30 years after I got out of the service. Heck, I was born there in 1955 in St. Ann's Hospital. Whoa, before you go try to find it for an explore, it was torn down many decades ago. St. Ann's became St. Elizabeth's Hospital. Which is now gone.
Anyway, I didn't know there was a residence behind Hara. Never got past all the concerts I went to at that venue. Who ever decorated that house was blind, crazy, or on some serious illicit materials. Looked like the place was decked out with remnants.
I went through your vids and realized I commented some time back on the explore you did on Delphos Avenue near dusk. I'll repeat that was very brave or very crazy. I loved most of the bathroom with the weird tiles in the shower and black and white backsplash behind the sink. Honestly if the wall were different it would be amazing imo

That China head doll wasn't creepy, she was BEAUTIFUL! I SO wish she were still there, she'd be worth a pretty penny, she's probably about 150 years old.

I’m not encouraging it, but if I were homeless, this mostly clean, intact home would have a lot of appeal. Lack of plumbing and heat would be a challenge, but it’s shelter, intact, and you don’t have to deal with shelter hassles.

I grew up going to hara arena with Carl Casper car shows wwe wrestling and concerts. It's sad it's closed but never knew there was a house behind there.
