Beautiful Amsterdam a century ago in the 1920s in color [A.I. enhanced & colorized]

- We begin with a stunning birdseye view of old Amsterdam in the 1920's.
The area surrounding Amsterdam's central station has for long been a hub that attracts many tourists.
The station was designed by architect Pierre Kuypers and built between 1881 and 1889. Its style is very similar to the Rijksmuseum, also designed by this architect.
In front of the station near the water we see the Noordhollands Koffiehuisje, later het Smits Koffiehuisje.
The old city of Amsterdam is one of the most picturesq places in the world. The houses that border Amsterdam's canals, the so-called 'grachten' have distinct facades. There are various types of gables: The clock, step, point and neck gables, easily recognizable by their shapes.
A great location is the area near the Nicolaas Kerk not far from the Central Station called "Het Kolkje".
The Nicolaaskerk with its characteristic dome is one of the remarkable buildings that comes into sight as soon as you arrive at the Central station. This beautiful basilica was built in 1887 and certainly worth a visit.
Amsterdam is well known for its canals, the so called grachten. Three canals that are constructed in a semi circle surround the old center: The Keizersgracht, Prinsengracht and Herengracht. In the summer these canals are filled with sightseeing tour boats. In earlier ages they formed a vital infrastructure for the delivery of goods that arrived at Amsterdam harbour.
We see the Ronde Lutherse Kerk, built between 1668 and 1671. It was damaged a number of times by fire.
On the way to the Dam we pass the Beurs van Berlage by Hendrik Petrus Berlage and built between 1989 and 1903. Arriving at the Dam you will see the Royal Palace by architect Jacob van Campen and built between 1648 and 1665.
Going further into old Amsterdam you are bound to encounter the Munttoren with its nearby floating flower market.
The Scheepvaarthuis on the Jan Hendrikkade was built in 1913 and the home of 6 major shipping companies.
The characteristic Waag at the Nieuwmarkt, built in the 15th century, used to be one of the entrance gates to the old city, called the Sint Antoniespoort.
Another great gate to old Amsterdam is the Muiderpoort at the Alexanderplein and built around 1770.
The Stadsuniversiteit building dates from 1632 and was elevated to university status in 1877
Not far from the rear of the Rijksmuseum, opposite the museum Plein is the great Concertgebouw building. Its acoustics are world renowed.
The Rijksmuseum is a "must-see" for any tourist. Not only does it house the famous Nachtwacht (Nightwatch) painting by Rembrandt van Rijn, but the museum also has a huge collection of works by the Dutch masters from the 17th century. Its gardens are also most certainly worth a visit.
When you say Amsterdam then Rembrandt is a name that immediately springs to mind. The place where he worked and lived in de Jodenbreestraat, the socalled Rembrandthuis, built in 1606 is an interesting place to visit.
There is also a cinema theater which bears his name. It is located at the Rembrandt Plein square. Here we see huge crowds in 1919 flocking to watch the film "De Koningin der Aarde" with Mia May in the lead.
The video also shows great shots of the Leidse plein with its many kiosks.
The Spinozahuis is where famous Dutch philosopher Spinoza lived in the 17th centure before he moved to The Hague. Spinoza was a radical who criticized the Bible, something that was "not done" in that period.
Another prominent citizen of Amsterdam was poet and playwrite Joos van den Vondel, famous for two tragedies: Gijsbrecht van Aemstel from 1637 and Lucifer from 1654. The Vondelpark with his statue in recent years has been a magnet for hippies and protest marches.
Amsterdam always was a city of joy. Here we see a number of street artistst in action.
Almost everybody in this city owns a bike and has done so since bicycles were invented.
Alike Antwerp many Jewish people lived in Amsterdam for cemturies; the diamond industry being one of their core trades. The famous Cullinan diamond, one of the British Crown Juwels, was cut here in the workshop of the Koninklijke Asscher Diamant Maatschappij.
An unspoiled quiet spot in old Amsterdam was and still is the Begijnhofje, founded in the 14th century, where nuns have their domicile.
Despite Amsterdams century long roll dating from the VOC period as trade hub, large parts of the city remained poor. We see some working class neigbourhoods.
The harbour of Amsterdam is the second largest in the Netherlands, after Rotterdam. It used to be directly connected to open sea until the IJsselmeer got closed of by the Afsluitdijk in the 1930s.
This is exceptional footage of old Amsterdam. We see old trams in the city as early as in 1919 near the Waterlooplein and on the Blauwe Brug.
Here are trams near the Willemspoort.
The Montelbaanstoren at the Oudeschans dates from 1516.

This video is intended for you all to *enjoy old footage of the Netherlands* . Sadly, as usual, some have *again* found the need to start the irritating and useless debates about immigration, racism, diversity, multiculturalism, colonialism etc. Besides a medical problem, these frustrations were among the reasons why I haven't uploaded anything for the past three months. I have really *had it with this debate* which pops up under all my videos. The worse are videos about old London. Any comment that touches these topics will now be simply *immediately deleted* . I hope you understand, and if you don't then, as one of my aunts frequently used to say, it's "hard cheese".

Ja, heel jammer Rick. Helaas zit ik me ook weer op te winden over zoveel onzin en gezeur er tegenwoordig er op video’s gegeven wordt. Vooral over hoe alles achteruit gegaan is en politiek er bij halen en andere dorpen/steden er bij betrekken. Heel vermoeiend. Bedankt voor je prachtige werk. Een boomer. 😂🎉

My mother was born in Amsterdam in 1921. It’s amazing to see what she would have seen in her childhood. Her father had a shop on the P.C. Hooftstraat, de Prijslijst, Queen Wilhelmina was a customer.
Mijn Opa was toen 10 jaar Hij kwam uit een gezin met 10 kinderen.
Volgens hem was het vreselijke armoede en ellende,met zijn allen in een 2 kamerwoning in de Borgerstraat en zij hadden het met een vader die diamantbewerker was,nog redelijk goed.
Ach ja ..Opa,ook al 35 jaar dood.
Maar mijn mokum was,is en blijft mijn stad.

Ik heb jaren in Amsterdam op school gezeten. Mijn grootouders woonden er en later ben ik er zelf gaan wonen en werkte jaren op de eerste verdieping van Amsterdam CS. I went there in Amsterstam back in September 2022 and I recognize some of the buildings in the video....wow. As for Amsterdam itself, I liked it, but I loved even more the smaller towns like Marken, Volendam, Edam....Something about the little towns I just like, maybe it's the fact that they all look unique.

Mijn vader , geboren en getogen in 1920 in de Jordaan, is nu 15 jaar geleden overleden..Ben zo blij dat hij de verloedering ( dagelijks steek, schiet partijen, brand/bomaanslagen) in heel Nederland, niet meer hoeft mee te maken......weet zeker dat hij ook n traantje zou laten.....ps. wel als dienstplichtige soldaat gevochten en 4 jaar krijgsgevangenen geweest...maar denk dat hij achteraf spijt zou hebben, dat hij die mooiste jaren van zijn jeugd gegeven heeft,voor de teloorgang die momenteel in Nederland gaande is....

Geweldig Rick, zo mooi om de geschiedenis van meer dan 100 jaar geleden terug te kunnen zien in kleur.
En die eenvoud van entertainment wat waren we toen snel tevreden.
Het is eigenlijk best vreemd dat Rembrandt bij zijn voornaam bekend is geworden. Meestal wordt de achternaam gebruikt. Zoals bv Picasso. Wat waren er veel handkarren en nog nauwelijks autos. Mooie passende muziek. Bedank voor weer zo'n mooie video.

Prachtige beelden weer en altijd fijn die achtergrondinformatie. Ik heb 13 jaar in de hoofdstad gewoond maar 4 jaar geleden naar Deventer verhuisd. Vond Amsterdam echt te druk en toeristisch geworden.
Ik ben geboren op de Postjesweg nr 59, twee hoog en mijn opa en oma de Natris hadden een avondwinkel naast de kroeg. Ik weet nog wel, dat de vaten met bier, per paard en wagen werd gebracht, ik denk zelf dat het de laatste keer was op die manier, want later heb ik het nooit meer gezien. Ik heb er 20 jaar gewoond en ook al ben ik blij dat ik nu aan de kust woont, heb ik soms nog wel eens heimwee, maar Amsterdam is Amsterdam niet meer. Die beelden zijn heel mooi, hou daar wel van, want wat is er veel veranderd.

Fabulously evocative of a time gone by, although Amsterdam must be one of those European cities which most closely resembles how it used to look. I bet those working class districts have been gentrified to the hilt though.
Yes, sadly that’s true. The upside is that the buildings have been preserved and not destroyed as is the case in many other places
Ha Rick, ik heb nu paar keer gekeken en genoten. Mijn hoogtepunten: 9.31 Polderhuisje, waarbij links de overhaal (overtoom) ook is te zien, 26.15 Mauritskade met het Weesperpoortstation. Geweldig om hiervan bewegend beeld te zien! Mijn kritiekje: 30.09 eerste shot is niet de Magere Brug, maar de brug op Bickerseiland. Je krijgt veel positieve commentaren, dus blijf doorgaan met dit werk!

Wat bijzonder te zien dat de voetgangers gewoon over de straat lopen ookal komt er genoeg verkeer aan, idem voor de fietsers, gewoon gaan hahaha veel vrijer alles. Geweldig dit te zien ♥Ik hou van Holland maar vooral van Amsterdam♥
Vlak voor het beeld van de Magere brug is de Sloterdijkerbrug van Nieuwe Teertuinen naar Prinseneiland. Prachtige beelden.

Weer een geweldige video Rick, maar weet je zeker dat de brug op 30:14 wel de magere brug is? De brug lijkt mij meer op de brug over de Prinseneilandsgracht, tussen de Galgenstraat en de Sloterdijkstraat.

Helaas kunnen wij in Rotterdam geen geen beelden tonen van gebouwen die nog steeds bestaan na 100 jaar Onze stad heeft er bijna 100 jaar overgedaan om weer een smoel te krijgen. Ooit was het van dezelfde schoonheid

Niet helemaal. Rotterdam had bijvoorbeeld geen grachtengordels. En het Rotterdam van nu is niet persé mooi, maar apart. Sommige vinden Disneyland ook mooi.
Trouwens er zijn uiteraard wél oude beelden van Rotterdam van voor de bombardementen van Duitsers en geallieerden en de vele gesloopte panden. Dus je verhaal is niet correct. Waarschijnlijk wilde je gewoon zeggen dat Rotterdam ook wel mooie panden had, maar nu niet meer.

Grappig dat het straatbeeld in die tijd eigenlijk precies is hoe we het nu weer willen hebben: Voetgangers, fietsers, trams en slechts hier en daar een enkele auto. Moraal van het verhaal : Dont try to fix something that isnt broken?
At 9:06min.: This building is not the Rijksmuseum; it is the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT)!
Spent three days in Amsterdam last summer and can't wait to return. A wonderful city, steeped in culture and history and with an enchanting, fantastically preserved historic core that was spared from the wholesale destruction of WWII that (unfortunately) left its mark on Rotterdam, Brussels, and countless other Western/Central European metropoles. Will definitely visit again when the next opportunity arises!

Moet je eens kijken naar alle nieuwigheden waar mensen toen over klaagden. Het (destijds als foeilelijk geziene) Centraal Station blokkeerde het magnifieke uitzicht op de zee/het IJ wat er daarvoor was. Levensgevaarlijke trams. Iedereen had maar haast.
Vroeger was ook voeger alles beter! 😂
