Christopher Hitchens is the author of over a dozen books including his recent memoir, Hitch-22. Other titles include, God Is Not Great, The Trial of Henry Kissinger, The Missionary Position: Mother Teresa in Theory and Practice, and Thomas Jefferson: Author of America. He is currently a contributing editor for the Atlantic Monthly magazine and a columnist for Vanity Fair magazine, where he has been writing articles about his diagnosis in the summer 2010 of stage four esophageal cancer

Only someone who didn't value logic, cogent argument, literature, history, advocacy for justice, etc, all things Hitchens excelled at, would type something like this. I didn't always agree with Hitchens, but he forced any honest and sentient human being to be at their best, think things through, consider issues. And that certainly improves a life. I feel my mind fully engaged while reading his works, which are copious and cover a broad subject matter. I learn things, and I follow up on them. As I said, I don't always come to the same conclusion as Hitchens (I often do, though), but I feel my mind improved. It's pathetic not to value that.
Francis cretarola well I am an engineer myself and logic is my utmost priority as I cannot just go through this life without thinking and also personally I consider art and litterateur a d history crucial for the minds expansion.that being said hitchens was very intellectual and well spoken I honestly now doubt if he was intelligent enough to what he was debating or stood for mainly atheism but he as all oh us is human and has some respectable stances and much more which are not.supporting the war on Iraq is not one of his best,the blood of the Iraqi people is on his hands.putting away politics he also didn’t have a practical philosophy to life he came from a priveledged position and criticized religion.Now when you do that you need to provide alternatives! As life is hard and religion helps a lot of people to have faith and get through this,hitchens only provided non practical methods of looking at things and that doesn’t help the poor and weak and the oppressed while religion does.
@@ayyoubkhalaf7307 Hitch should have offered an alternative to religion? He did. Life without religion. Yes, life can be shit. Yes, he was fortunate to be born to the parents he was. But there are people of all social classes, levels of wealth, nationalities, level of education who are atheist and who have peers who believe in god. God's not necessary to live your life, no matter how shit life is.

I will always miss this guy, his phenomenal linguistic skills, his intellect and rational thinking. People compare him to Dawkins, or Harris, I love these 2 as well, but Christopher Hitchens should not be compared to anybody because he is in category of his own, truly one of the kind.
So sad that I have discovered Mr Hitchens pothumously on youtube. What an amazing person. Would have loved to explore his mind over a drink or two....

AJA Deacon Charging to get your unbaptized babies out of limbo? No. He didn't do that. So I'd say his principles trump the pope's. Hitchens best disclosure to date has to be his debunking of mother theresa, condemning millions to the destructive habit of breeding while starving to death.

Hey Ed, I agree he was not everyone's cup of Earl Grey. When I first heard him on tv I thought him pompous and arrogant. That he may be but I realized he was a smart man. What else?, as you ask... I would refer you to him taking on the role of chief accuser of Kissinger.
I can't name you anyone who would have published a book (good read btw) exposing Kissinger in the way Hitch did.
Ditto Uncle Bill Clinton as well as Mother Theresa.
So when I stated I felt the Hitch had principles, I was including his public stance against the above named individuals. Post note: his autobiography (Hitch 22) is a solid read. He did a heck of a lot more in his early years than blast religion.
Though I often felt he could well have been a 'know it all' in company.
Not an endearing attribute.

Such a person of integrity and strength. He did have a life of great depth and meaning.
He lost his integrity later in life - supporting wars and developing a prejudiced hatred against Islam. Interesting how he wrote a book about Mother Theresa yet didn't write a book about Bush etc

vicachcoup Well it wasn't hate he was trying to ignite in people or towards the regular people, it was the people of power in Islam. He had no say in strategy. He didn't agree with allot of it. He was also against the treatment of the prisoners ones they got to the USA. He also agreed to be water boarded to be able to say if it was torture or not. He said it was torture. (the government was claiming it was not). He was trying to get people to listen long before the war started in regards to Islam. His agenda was crimes against humanity, especially towards women. So there is allot more to it than what you stated. I respectfully disagree with you.

vicachcoup Yes really I do very much agree with you. I am very aware of my fortunate position in life. I am first born North American (Canadian). My Grand Parents came to escape war torn UK. So the luxury of it is probably to the point I can not even begin to imagine.

sean mc connell the same thing happened with me, I watched TH-cam videos of him for around two weeks before checking his Wikipedia to learn more about him only to find that he had passed =( I have been reading his memoir and it's hilarious, Mortality is worth a read Aswell, though I'll warn you that his final unfinished jottings are quite poignant

Christopher Hitchens is possibly my favorite human being of all time (Dawkins is in the hunt, too) because he was so articulate, well-read, thoughtful, lucid, objective, and brave. Because of his efforts, I and others around me are much improved.
The enemy of religion is not Hitchens, Dawkins, Krause, etc. The enemy of religion is knowledge, education, and reason.

What a great man. A once in a lifetime human being who many of us owe a great deal to because of his work.
Listening to him describe the toll the cancer treatment took on his body, and how humble he sounds describing his limited but fortunate ability to continue reading and writing makes me want to cry.

I have never been more impressed by an example of human intelligence than by listening to Christopher Hitchens; i know I will always carry his example of critical thinking and bravado with me forever. He is a prime example of the real meaning of life; we give our lives meaning, and when we are gone and finished living, what we have accomplished is what will be left. That is the true gift of life itself, that we can leave a legacy for future generations, and that we have the power to give meaning to the lives of others even after we are no longer alive ourselves. I think Christopher did this beautifully, and for that alone, he will always have won the battle.

First of all, "ED" I should think that if you are a man of any intelligence whatsoever you should be ashamed of yourself for making the claim that "i believe that he would say the same thing" The man is dead; he doesn't need anyone telling ME what he would think of his own contribution.
Secondly, to rebuke my own personal opinion (which is strictly what i made, btw, a personal opinion statement) as if I had made some factual comment that was given without evidence. This is my "opinion" "ed" and not a factual statement. I also think it rather intellectually weak and cowardly of you to loosely claim that hitchens was not an original thinker, offering NO evidence for such a "factual" claim, as well as giving no names of these phantom individuals that were apparently more original than he. "regurgitation of more original thinkers" Such as who...? "ed" Plato?, Socrates?
C. Hitchens had plenty to say that was original, plenty of things which nobody else BT he could have said. "Name me one good claim, a good deed, that be done by the faithful, in the name of god, that I, as a non-believer, could not also make" That was Hitchens. Never was that ever said by any other person but him. He also had plenty of original thinking to share when it came to his descriptions of Saddam's regime, and the take over by the bathe Party in the 70s.
I maintain my opinion(s) and laugh at your feeble and unsubstantiated claims; your attempt at saying: "i don't really think hitchens was that great, and you shouldn't really have as high an opinion of him either" Because truly, "ed" THAT is what you have really said here, and nothing more. I love that he enjoyed saying witty remarks and condemning his usual suspects of hated public figures just as much here as he did at any other time. He sort of enjoyed saying "the thing about stage 4 is that there's no stage 5," for example; you could see he had the slightest smile despite the fact that it is one of the most damning things he could say about his own health and life. "Mortality" is brilliant in this way because it largely is about his own experiences, hellish as they were, going through treatments and frustrations with his ability to speak or write, and yet he still takes the time to mention Voltaire, or his attitude on, say, how meaningless prayer is even if God did actually exist. He remained true to himself to the end, which was exactly what he wanted, and achieving a goal like that in such a dire context is an inspiration. So few people are truly unique as he was.
@Jazzkeyboardist1 I don't think Hitch ever minded admitting he was wrong - if he was wrong. I think what people loved about him was his eloquence and that he was prepared to call out charlatans such as Clinton and Kissenger. I also think, on balance, he was right more often than he was wrong. I imagine by your comment that you have never made an error in judgement - what a boring, pain in the backside you must be. Personally, I think it's his ability to articulate his views, on any given subject, in a way that most people could only dream of matching is what really pissed you off. You sound like a petulant child who can't make their a point without attempting to demean their opposition in the most laughable and ineffective way. The moment you said 'Chrissy' you lost all respect. I gather debating isn't something you excell in, so don't give up practising the keyboard, even numpties have to be good at something.

You either know the guy or you don't. Since you do and I kind of figured (hence my comment) your question is sarcastic, unless you hold some interest in my opinion of what I think his skills were but coming from a stranger with "4 word question" that seemed improbable.

Ed Bzoky Then I apologize for jumping the gun, been caught up with too many people just talkin' shit randomly and I can't tell if it's because I'm 31 now and that means I'm ancient on the internet or if culture just changed and I didn't ketch it. Regardless I'm right there with ya, I have read a couple of his books and any chance I get I bring him up for discussion because that's what he was, a man for discussing things and although I know he agrees with not "Hero-worshiping" I am in awe of his ability to recite from such a vast knowledge on a moments notice, even being frustrated during argument which I wish I could do, so I am still in process of studying his work and his methods. All though it may not seem like it.
The greatest of his debates I use as a topic when discussing with a friend of mine, we've known each other since toddlers and he became a Pastor and I'm talking about speaking in tongues and doesn't believe in evolution kind of Pastor, I was so glad to hear that he knows who Christopher Hitchens was and to know some of his arguments. The only other common grounds I had with him of recent years was we both think the Catholics are funny as hell, though my friend might not think "hell" is funny and I know if it wasn't for the terrible deeds that Catholics did during the dark ages to spread Christianity, he wouldn't be a Christian. It's kind of like Americans reaping the benefits from slavery yet we didn't pay anyone back for the free labor they were forced to do. Christian reap the benefits of being able to not just get plenty of people on board but also brag about having more than 2 billion people today because of some real evil, sick, shit from the past.

+Neil Kerr , Yes, that's true, Neil, but wait, we have been able to read such a wealth of logical thought, and we can surely find joy in the fact that we heard great people like 'The Hitch' giving us FAR, FAR better explanations for the world, etc., than religious nonsense. We have lived in an amazing age, and I find deep joy in that, in spite of the dreadful conflicts in the world, made by stupid, immature sections of humanity. Take heart ! We have a great deal to be joyful about....let's not get bogged down too much by the bad things ! (Gosh, those tablets are working well today ! "All hail, Paroxetine" !!!). I am 68 now, and feel 'age' creeping on, but hey, that's what happens! All we can do is try our best, try to help others, and that includes exposing myths and lies that are a hindrance to human progress. If you're feeling a bit 'low', have a look at You Tube, there's a lovely relaxing video called "River In The Shire", it shows a lovely river (what are the chances of that?!) in spring, with gentle water sounds, plus lovely birdsong...it's as if you're really there. I get very 'down' in the winter, especially this time, with so many dismal, wet, windy days (today I am scared by Storm 'Imogen', and if it will bring down some ill-managed trees right over my place), so what I do is seek out cheerful videos (you tube is SO valuable), like the 'River' one, and also there are so many funny films etc., it is a great service. for a short period in time it was thought among some that the Pope could explain about what we call science and nature . Hundreds of years ago we understood he could not and for hundreds of years (thousands of years) we have known that Genesis was not literally true !! It was the early faithful (Jews) asking the fundamental questions "Why are we here?? What is the point of our existence ?? "
It is through study of the bible and relating it through the real world that we understand more. It is only the fundamentals that are unchangeable .., Jesus the son of God died and rose again for our sins so that we could have eternal life and other fundamentals found in the Gospels !!
Hitchens taught us much more than the folly of religion. He taught us to never falter in our standard of evidence and application of logic and reason. I can't think of a more powerful lesson in any given circumstance.

I've been putting this off for several months now. Finally decided to watch it and I have to admit, this made me quite emotional. I didn't think I could be saddened by the death of someone I've never seen in person.

I think there is something pitiful about dying of esophageal cancer at ANY age. I watched my grandmother go through it, and I am very grateful that I can only imagine what kind of hell on earth that man experienced.

I don't have an ego that I have to nurture and coddle. I certainly don't agree with Hichens on all things. The legacy that I refer to is that he was able to influence people to throwaway faith and belief without evidence on all manner of topics and adopt the most valuable tool that man has to advance and better this world. Sweet reality is found in the ability to embrace reason and think responsibly in lieu of a discipline mind, as well as being true to oneself. Hichens was also a wise teacher.

Cwikstopher Bitchems I think he kept positive about it because that's the only way he could live productively. But the normal life span with what he had would be about 1 year with treatment.
It’s a coping mechanism used by a lot of people. Hearing him discuss his future is like a knife in the heart. The world is poorer without him.
the greatest compliment I can pay Hitchens is that although i never had the pleasure to meet him, over the years, the quality of my own spoken and written language and vocabulary have improved so much from reading his work and watching his videos .
I admire Christopher Hitchens for many reasons, he has added to my life immeasurably. Leave it to Hitchens to be a leader, figurehead, and spokesman for not only his life's work, but of the human genome project as well.
May he reach others for many generations to come.

Open, honest and direct in the conversation with "it is Brian, isn't it?" - a sense of human warmth between them, held back by professionalism and genuine interest in the conversation. When my time comes, I hope to be as sharp and calm and curious. Thank you Hitchens, for expanding my understanding of many things.
It struck me that Lamb's interviewing style is sometimes factual to the point of being distracting ("You wrote a book about the last days of Abraham Lincoln...how did he die?"), not because he doesn't know the facts, but he wants to make sure the viewers have all of the information they need to understand the conversation, but in this case, it's cool to see how warm he was with Hitch, and you could tell how much he didn't want the conversation to end.
I can only hope I have the same courage and humility when I'm at the door of death as Christopher had.

+ohdwight my best friend is a leading oncologist. the issue we have are funds. they need money to drive on pioneering drugs and treatment. The problem is chemo and the dramatic effects it has on people. however the are working on alternatives.

This gives me the opportunity to be a free thinker and a mentally free person. The world is a vastly improved because he gave voice and argument to ideas and concepts which offer true freedom to individuals. Thank you Christopher.

When we lack our own works, I know how fortunate we are as to have had the likes of John Lennon and Christopher Hitchens.
I noticed in all the vitriol spewed by the religious in the comment section it seems that none have read one of his books. And not a single ONE of them said _a prayer for his family for their loss._
It is obvious that they haven't listened to a single debate about "God vs Science" or "Is Religion a force for good" here on TH-cam.

I agree. It's a bit disappointing how the media takes hold of his antitheistic remarks rather than divulging in some of his other intellectual fascinations. The man was incredibly fascinating and deserves thorough analysis. I suspect that in the near future he will become an academic icon like Huxley or Orwell and will be a staple amongst high school and college education.
