This feels brilliant the more you listen to it. It grows. It's a shame it never found its place. Even as a b-side. It's got something about it though. Lyrically it feels hopeful. Great seeds of good musicianship that just needed knocking into place a bit more. Fascinating stuff though. Cheers for letting people hear it!
What a gem !!! And only a demo. Just imagine a fully completed production. It sounds so fragile and yet such a great dynamic and power. Can't get enough of it ! As a lifetime SM-fan you think they cannot really surprise you anymore and than this turns up ... So over the moon with this song.
A significant moment - the first unreleased SM track with vocals that's ever been publicly leaked if I'm not mistaken. When I first heard it, the experience for a lifelong fan like myself was monumental - like discovering SFY's lost child. Beautiful and stately, and the lyrics very relevant for the world of today. Obviously the jumping off point for Saturday Girl, but where Saturday Girl is lightweight fluff, this is a genuine protest song, without the shouting. And perhaps this accounts for its omission from the album. Where much of SFY is an understated sign of the times (save the tacked-on Ballad of the Streets EP), People Stand Up Again is direct, so the band may have felt the inclusion of the song would just be overdoing it, and the fluff version of Saturday Girl was a much needed respite from the street fighting. But hard to deny that the track's relegation to the archives is a loss for everyone, and certainly a missed opportunity for the SFY box set. Oh, and that magnificent coda - the sound of Burchill and MacNeil in lockstep that would prove nigh on impossible to replicate in post 80's SM. So now that it's out there, no more messing around - release it with some upgraded audio instead of letting it rot in the vaults for eternity...
It's got that goodnight tone to it! Which I love as I remember that day when it came my way and my whole world seemed to learn of the great encyclopedia of Simple Minds music, out there and hidden! Goodnight ❤️
Instead of having the rest of..the ballad of the streets..on the album. I honestly thought it was incredibly sneaking putting Mandela and biko on. Proper rip off album.
Thank you very much, grazie mille. I hear/Feel the presence of the great"man in the sky" Mick Mcneil. Beautiful song . Greetings from Italy from a Simple Minds fan since 1983!
It's unintelligible that they have not published this gem! Either they had a bad producer or they are not aware of how great they are! A JEWEL. SFY PERIOD! ! When I bought the BOXSET, I thought it would be edited. A shame, a bad decision 😢
Been listening to this for a couple of years now since it cropped up over on TTD, and I'm still obsessed with it. Hopefully more will surface from the sessions at Sarm West, Barwell Court and BWS at some point in time. What an absolute rough diamond this is, pure class musically and lyrically, it would have sat very well on SFY, but I guess SFY already had 'Soul Crying Out' on it, which I suppose was very much of a similar nature thematically. "There's people outside who should be inside" / "And maybe I'll write this ode unto you... it's 'People Stand Up Again" - brilliant stuff from Jim. The theme was so fitting back then with everything going on in Thatcher's Britain, and here we are I guess around 36 years later from this being penned circa 1988, and nothing's changed really has it. Same old compassionless and deliberately divisive crap from a new bunch of Tory faces... the ones who want to criminalise the homeless and shred their tents, the one's who partied it up in public office during lockdowns when the rest of the country, on its knees, abided by the rules, the ones who want to send those desperately fleeing to our shores from oppression and war-torn countries to give themselves half a chance at life back to a country with an appallingly bad human rights record. F the tories.
Why did they put Great Wall of Love on the SFY. Why not this song here? 😂 Such a nice piece of music. The SFY is legendary. This here would have been another hit.
Beautiful instrumentation from 4’.00 mins on. A shame MacNeil dumped the Yamaha cp70 for a stacked Kawai (or similar) midi grand. It’s defo dated worse than the cp70. Burchill on fine form here.
Would have been a welcome addition to street fighting years; ditch Biko and insert this and Saturday Girl (yes a bit of work needed but not impossible to overcome)

More than a jewel. A hidden treasure. Many thanks for sharing

What a song, a standout track! Should have been in the album no questions!

So great, unbelievable!!! Thanks for Sharing!!!👍👍👍

Love goodnight...a great b- side....never heard this before though.
😮@@slw0599
Never heard this before. this is great.
How did this not end up on SFY? Amazing song !! A song of those times(88-89), I would also say it could relate to present times.
Instead of having the rest of..the ballad of the streets..on the album. I honestly thought it was incredibly sneaking putting Mandela and biko on. Proper rip off album.
Finally more people can hear this gem! ;)
,I’ve waited 34 years to hear this thank you so much for posting.
Love this. I've never heard it before. Its a great song and I wish it was included on the SFY boxset.
Had no idea this even existed, very nice. Thanks for posting. If only someone would post some Once Upon a Time demos. I know they are out there...
Extremely beautiful.🤩 It could have been included in the celebratory box, who knows why they didn't do it!!🤔
Thank you very much, grazie mille. I hear/Feel the presence of the great"man in the sky" Mick Mcneil. Beautiful song . Greetings from Italy from a Simple Minds fan since 1983!
Good man , people should hear stuff like this from Simple minds more often . Thanx for upload .
This is dripping street fighting years vibe. Its already on my play lists. SIMPL MINDS the gift that keeps on giving. Now time to play again..
Thank you so much for publishing, it appeals to all the vibe of SFY, just thought-provoking and potentially life-changing
A beautiful hidden gem. Thank you guys.🙏
The famous unreleased track taken from monitor mix n.1
SFY era dropped demo.
It needs some rework on saturation levels and coda part.
Still fresh.
Thanks for this! Not heard it before - the legendary demo! cheers

You are aware of who produced Street Fighting Years? … bad producer, I think not!! Just too many tracks and this one got cut, simple. Decent song tho…
Thank you so much for sharing this !!!!
Do you have other unreleased tracks from SFY sessions ?
For a demo already very nice. Saturday Girl is indeed not far away but a song with potential....
First time hearing this , great track , definitely space for it on a future album.
hope so.
This is beautiful!
Clearly a gem. Sounds pretty like Saturday Girl.

Absolutely.
Wow. I ❤SimpleMinds

Brilliant track. 1st time I've ever heard it. Should've made the album
Thanx for sharing. Great. 🤜❤️🤛
Uno de los.mejores grupos de la historia
Lost classic ❤❤❤
Classic SFY era slide from Charlie 👍🏻
Wow!
Just great
Should release it now fully produced. Definite hit.
You can't be serious.
Top Class Gem
SM ever and for ever !

At 3.50 You get goosebumps every time.
McNeil and Burchill in the groove
Would have been a welcome addition to street fighting years; ditch Biko and insert this and Saturday Girl (yes a bit of work needed but not impossible to overcome)
Is Jim Kerr a timetraveler? these lyrics man
Beats anything on the Real Life album that followed SFY.
Ein neuer Hit
Would have made a nice CD bonus track, or hidden track…
Clearly from the SFY sessions. Great recording but unfortunately in mono.
Oaft that’s a tune
We are not so far from the Hothouse flowers. That irish folk style. It reminds us a little "Stand by love".
Prima
Would have loved to know what compressor the bassist was using …
So do I; it’s the one I’m searching for …
👍♥️
It's nice enough but sounds like a cross between This is your Land and Saturday Girl.
😍😍😍👏👏👏🙌🙌🙌👍👍👍
Gijón Asturias
Reminds me of a late 80's West Coast Baywatch feel... Some people stand in the darkness, afraid to step into the light👍
When SM turned into Bruce Hornsby and The Range
I would stripped out Wall of love, Kick it in and Biko for this track.
Good song, I have the SFY album before it went to be edited& polished for release. It’s probably better than the finished product with its rawness
Hi, any chance I could get a copy??
Nah ,not up to standard of songs on SFY. 3:50 Its trying to be the single SFY but doesn't quite get there.
Shame this wasnt included in the sfy boxset, pretty poor set to be honest ...
Terrible ham-fisted lyrics. Hard not to cringe. I wish I'd never heard this.
