Besides the actual hardcore aspect of hardcore, you can make the same complaints about retail for classic. Leveling is "pointless", other players feel like NPCs, I "zoom in on"/inspect players just as infrequently in classic as in retail. Classic is just about as much "lobbysim" as retail besides the fact you are actually forced to walk most places instead of queue up but it's not like that makes the classic noticeably more or less enjoyable. Aside from that at max level you are waiting around in the capital spending your purchases told while you form a group/wait for raid.
The journey to level is gone in retail, and once you hit max level it’s a Korean type grind fest, slot machine spam until your eyes bleed to get BiS until the season ends and all your work was for nothing. Classic leveling is vastly superior, just the endgame is lackluster in my opinion, but I’d rather be raidlogging and playing around with secondary features or starting alts than spamming M+ for best in slot to be temporarily competitive with everyone else.
Some people don't like leveling, others do. That's the beauty of having multiple versions. Also they made the gearing in TWW A LOT faster. So people can focus on the gameplay and io/rating progression more
