24 hour sub dial? If it does count 24 hours then thats brilliant for 24 hour races. Clearly youve never heard of 24 hours of le mans or nurburgring?! This watch would really perform in those circumstances. Not only because it is solar. Which charges under any light they say. But that it wont have any spring deviation or requiring of charging where a rolex would. Meaning this is extremely accurate for racing.
In terms of calculating velocities. 24 hours is probably used to divide acceleration into geological positioning as well. Making that easier. Ive never been trained to use a chronograph. But the ability to have 24 increments helps navigate on foot too. Im sure that in space. And the farther away from earth you get. The 24 hour sub dial helps calculate your position and the rotation of earth. Counter to your movements.
Also its great for military time.

Seiko has many solid and good models but this specific one is definitely overpriced. AND yes an automatic movement seiko with similar specs to Swiss watches also gonna cost you few thousand dollars.

You know, if there's no special occassion but doing groceries, you just grab something that you know ticks and you know is set and accurate.
Solar man. The way this Solarchrono and Cartier's Tank Solar have sort of 'hidden' the solar panels is pretty genius.

Good review. For me the selling points on this watch are the smooth running center hand. I try to stay away from watches with dead-beat seconds, as is common on too many quartz movements. The other selling point is the 24 hour dial. My Omega Speedmaster caliber 1045 also has a 24 hour dial. This becomes particularly useful when starting up the watch when it has not run for a while. I instantly know when it is safe to set the date. Without the 24 hour dial the only safe method is to keep turning the hands until the date changes, then turn the hands 5 more hours and set the correct date. Although this watch does not look anything like any of my caliber 6139’s, I still like it and will purchase one.

Nice review and totally agree with you on the 24 hr subdial. I would much prefer a traditional hour counter. Or as you point out make the 24 hr dial independent of the main dial to track a second time zone. As it is, 90% of people have no real use for a 24 hr dial that essentially only acts and an AM/PM indicator.

The 24 hour subdial is for motorsports endurance racing, 24 hours of Daytona, Lemans, Spa. It's in the name itself Speedtimer.

Been waiting for this review -- Really does look like a good, almost great watch, but the real shame is that price. Personally I think I'll backburner this one given I've added enough new watches this year, and cross fingers it might go on sale in the next 1-2 years. If I do pick it up at some point, I might have to get a black sailcloth too, given it looked really good on that one.

Fantastic review! Normally I would say the watch is a little too expensive for me given the specs of it and the size does seem a little small though I’d have to see on my wrist. But the burgundy leather strap killed me. I need to own this combination.

An excellent and honest review as always Dave. I have one reserved and will collect next week. Priced around £600 in the UK which is probably expensive but that's just the way it is here. Nevertheless I am really looking forward to it.

Nice vid, like always here, thx for that. This Seiko is a really nice watch, looked amazing on the burgundy strap. Falling in love with this combination! But one thing...did noone really notice the dust on the subdials? I think for nearly 700 bucks its a big no go!

Hi Dave, good comments regarding the sub-dials. My main gripe with the watch is why isn't the date window equally spaced between the 4 and 5 o'clock indices? A small detail, but one that bugs me.

I really like the look of this one. Thanks for the review. Any issues on how the end links meet up to the case? Lot of the pictures I have seen online look like they are gapping, especially on the sides. Maybe it is just the picture. Domed sapphire for the win!

Very nice review I'm not quite sure about the complaints... maybe lack of finishing is ok but having solar panels in the subdials? that's pretty genius if u ask me, they look nice and the watch looks very nice... price surely bit too high...

I wouldn't use an independent 24 hour sub dial to track another time zone too often but that's better than what exists currently. A 24 hour sub dial is almost completely useless for me. I'm not an astronaut, spelunker, and I don't live at the north or south pole.

The 24 hour dial comes from the precious iteration of the speedtimer, which is one of the few watches that have gone to space. A 24 hour dial is highly useful for those who can't tell the time of day by the light left.
As for me, I really don't mind it one bit.

    • @GeorgeUK84

Great video as always, I'm gonna try some of those straps combinations. Love the look of the watch but I think the Seiko SSC769 is a far better deal, sapphire, 100m, solar at around $225 and it has a similar panda look.

Great review, thank you once again ! That said….. why would I go and buy this watch from Seiko ? I have nothing against Seiko, I love the brand I own 6 Seiko’s, and this watch look beautiful…. but at about 1000$ retail Canadian that’s way too much for a simple quartz watch, yes it has Sapphire crystal, milled clasp, solid end links, and is Solar….. but I can buy a Pagani Design Daytona Homage PD-1644 with sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel, milled clasp, solid end links, and with a Seiko VK63 Meca-Quartz movement for around 80$ Canadian, which I did, and am very happy about it. You could buy 10 Pagani PD-1644 for the price of one Seiko.
Something else I noticed, why don’t more people on youtube bash Seiko or Tissot for that matter, for producing a watch “ hommage/copy “ of a Rolex Daytona ? Why ? Because it has the Seiko or Tissot name/brand on the watch ? Because of their history in the world of watch making ? I still find it a little hypocritical when that happens, but that’s my opinion…..
Thank you and keep the videos coming.

Hey Dave, I really enjoy your content. With you being in Japan, it allows us to hear directly what's going on there in the watch world before it comes to the rest of the world. I am very interested in this watch. Thank you for reviewing it. In shopping prices, I am seeing listings for 2 watches both of which appear to be the Speedtimer but, with different pricing. One is an SSC813 and the other is an SSC813P1. The P1 is typically $100 more. Can you please explain the difference of these watches?

I recently picked up this watch at a local watch store. I wasn’t looking for it but once it was pointed out to me as a Seiko Panda watch I had to give it a second look. I don’t know what happened but once I put on, it took me by surprise! For me of course, once I placed it on my wrist, it had a totally different look and feel. I was instantly enamored! I browse watches at stores and try them on but none have ever struck me as this watch did. I am absolutely not a collector, but do own my fair share of watches, 24 or so I believe. Being a big fan of Timex Marlin watches, while purchasing a Seiko SRPH78 Limited Edition Seiko Presage, I was shown this Panda/Speedtimer SSC813P1. Needless to say, I ended up walking away with two watches. Quite a few people complain about the 24 hour dial or the subdial as well as the price. Though I like the look of the chronograph, I would never use that function in anything I do. Most cell phones have that capability, and my iPhone does that job just fine whenever I am timing something for work. Subdials do not bother me in the least and the price was greatly reduced on both watches, that’s more so due to the fact that I am a good customer. The prices I paid were well below list price, I did some research and found the pricing to be very fair. Again, this Panda watch was an impulse buy but by far is now one of my favorites in my collection, yes, even above the Marlins. Thank you for such a great review on this watch! Your work is amazing!
