40 years ago when I was at Fort Campbell KY my roommate had just PCS’d from Korea and said while by and large the experience was good, he would tell us horror stories of life at Camp Humphreys and Korea in general. After watching this video I cannot help but think that Korea has come a very long way. It looks like a great place to be. My nephew is about to deploy to Camp Humphreys from Joint Base Lewis McCord and he has never been outside the US. I think he’ll work hard, but he’ll have an incredible social life.

As a Korean, I want to make it clear that South Korea is not a defeated country in World War II. We are not Japan, Germany or Italy. South Korea has sovereignty over the territory and infrastructure of the U.S. military base in South Korea. The United States only has jurisdiction and operation of the U.S. military base in South Korea, And the infrastructure within the U.S. military base is funded by our South Korean taxpayers. You can station troops in South Korea because South Korea has voluntarily signed the "South Korea-US Mutual Defense Treaty" with the United States. According to Article 4, South Korea gives the United States the power to deploy army, navy and air forces within or around South Korean territory. But don't forget that according to Article 6 of the South Korea-US Mutual Defense Treaty, either party can unilaterally terminate the treaty and expire after one year. That is to say, South Korea can terminate the treaty so that the U.S. military and its strategic assets can be withdrawn from South Korea and return all U.S. military bases.

If there is ever the opportunity for some of us Veterans to visit (I like to call it the new Korea) please let us know. Visiting a place so many years later would be awesome to see how things have changed.
I served as Katusa 20 years ago. Sad. U.S. Army 2ID is still located in isolated region. But, I am happy to see that more and more U.S. soldiers can invite their families and socialized in S.Korean society. I deeply wish at least they can practice one martial art in S.Korea or inside camp. Our government must dedicate more defense budget for USFK not only for military relation but also for social welfare of U.S. soldiers in S.Korea. N.Korea and Communist China are our common enemies. We go together~!

Red Wolf Music Was there '87-'88 at the 249th Detachment way out in the boonies which no longer exists. I can definitely confirm that there was NOTHING out there during those times. Damn, I was there at the wrong time!

So I was there Dec 17-Dec 18, Humphreys is nice, it's a city inside a city, but to say we had a ton of time to enjoy it well....we had a lot of EDRES to go with our work schedules, but we did have some time. The issue is that whenever the Army gets you overseas like that they seem to be good at taking your time, plus mass punishments kept the curfews alive and well. Overall I did enjoy Korea, I'd still recommend it but not for initial duty station, those Soldiers need to learn how the Army works first they really struggled!!
By the way if you are unaccompanied E1-E6 I highly recommend you have a bicycle, the bus system is a pain on the butt, and the cabs are expensive for no reason. Now you can travel the peninsula with the bus system fairly cheap but on post it's not time efficient
Beautiful country and great people. However, It is deceptively peaceful. Officially, the Korean War never technically ended. Although the Korean Armistice Agreement brought an end to the hostilities that killed 2.5 million people on July 27, 1953, that ceasefire never gave way to a peace treaty. The armistice allowed the POWs to stay where they liked; drew a new boundary near the 38th parallel that gave South Korea an extra 1,500 square miles of territory; and created a 2-mile-wide “demilitarized zone” that still exists today.
I wish I was back at South Korea…. And had a opportunity to live over there.

I’ll admit this. The only thing the Army is better then the Marine at, is housing their soldiers and family with some really nice facilities.
