    YNAB does not have auto-categorizing, but it does remember how you categorize payees. I shouldn't have to tell the app every time Chipotle is a restaurant. So that is a plus for YNAB

  • @martfranman
    @martfranman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +94

    Of course Rachel will favor ED because they sell it. She said very little about YNAB but it works so much better because you are budgeting money you actually have as you get it. With ED you have to estimate and when you don't have a fixed income that is hard to do.

      I agree 💯 and I'm not a zero based budget type of girl so that just makes it even harder. I don't like guessing how much my entire monthly income will be just to do the zero based budget. I budget per week as the paycheck comes in, especially because every paycheck is different it's irregular income its never the same.

      @@arlettezambrano3894Just hearing that it budgets income as you get it already seems better.
      Budgeting by month is harder to keep track if you get paid weekly.

    YNAB is zero based. A big difference that made that app click for versus others was you don't budget money until you have. You don't forecast your income. You only budget and therefore spend money you have. It's my favorite app and for the first time in a looong time I haven't overdrawn my accounts in a long time. Money rolls over in categories so you can build sinking funds such as car repairs...

  • @pawebb
    @pawebb ปีที่แล้ว +43

    She dinged YNAB because categories rollover, and then the first feature in ED she mentions is that categories rollover. 🤦🏻‍♂ In ED you have to manually go through each category to reclaim those dollars. In YNAB there is an Overfunding button to reclaim those dollars. Another win for YNAB.

    YNAB has auto categorizing, yes, but it requires you to approve the transactions as they import from your bank/credit union. I regularly have to change the categories on things before I approve them.

  • @donnoir
    @donnoir 2 ปีที่แล้ว +33

    Longtime YNAB user, just had a look at ED free version to see for myself how comparable it is. Seems ED has a very different approach from setup. YNAB prompts you to input what your actual account balances are today and that's what you use to budget with. You can't budget with money you don't have today. Seems like ED prompts you to set up with your planned salary and planned expenses, then track your actual income and spending. That's a very different approach. Also, as someone living outside the US, I wasn't able to easily change the currency. It links to your computer /phone settings for some reason. In YNAB you can just change it yourself in the settings. Just the initial impression, they're pretty different!

    • @questionyourbeliefs
      @questionyourbeliefs 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah this diff alone makes YNAB the winner IMO. You don't want to be accounting with dollars you don't have yet.

    YNAB *is* zero based. Every dollar is given a job. It's weird that with all the things you could say about it, you pick one that isn't actually true. It's certainly true that the categories roll over, BUT that is its job. Thus, zero based.

    Like everything out there: it depends how you use it. It took me a bit of time and research to familiarize myself with YNAB and get to use it’s full power, I can see how if you are just starting to budget Every Dollar is probably a better option but nowadays with TH-cam anything can be learned and adapted to your personal use if you give it a bit of time and effort.
    Ultimately I still use a spreadsheet to build the budget for the month with my husband and then I update YNABs targets if necessary. Definitely a zero based budget since I can only assign the money I get per paycheck, nothing more and nothing less.

  • @brentkillian
    @brentkillian 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    My wife and I use every dollar and ynab both. While it is true ynab is not Free if you want to use the connect to your bank feature it is like 40 to 50 Dollars per year which is cheaper than every dollar paid version. What my wife and I do is do the monthly zero based budget in every dollar. When we assign the money in ynab after we assign as expenses roll in we reduce each category we can know how much money is left for each category. This is quite helpful if you do a sinking fund saving up for Christmas and birthday gifts insurance escrow are a few examples of our sinking funds. Also ynab does not auto categorize it remembers what you last categorized the expense as. It asks you if the transaction is correct very easily changed.

    • @brentkillian
      @brentkillian 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Brooke Carrillo maybe I will ask my wife about it. I am not sure why she likes to use both that way. Definitely love the connect to your bank feature I think ynab is way cheaper than every dollar for that feature

"Extra" money is just $ for my future bills and expenses so I like to let it roll over and do what its intended job was.

    Look I get that you would be biased towards EveryDollar but don’t do it at the expense of lying about YNAB. Saying YNAB isn't a zero-based system is a lie. That is at the core of their process. You can promote other aspects of EveryDollar like its simplicity and cost compared to YNAB. The more honest you are about your competitors, the more respect I will have for your bias towards your product. However, it is understandable that you would want to promote the strengths of EveryDollar compared to YNAB. By acknowledging the positive features of both products, you can still express your preference for EveryDollar while remaining honest and respectful of YNAB.

    Question.. Do any of these apps mint, ynab or every dollar have the ability to make customized categories or subcategories ? We spend a ton of groceries, in a predictable way.
