    Of all your pieces I like the dragonfly pitcher. The best raku and also best pottery I've ever seen. Then the fern urn. Thanks for sharing the art.

    You clearly have this Art thing down to an....Art. This is a great introduction to Raku that feels like a visit with a nice couple having a lovely day. Very accessible and shows cooperation skills and how skill with patience and human touch and breath combine to make such incredible pieces.

    Great video. I actually visited your blog, regularly, several years ago, when I was building my Raku kiln. Mine is built from a steel garbage can, lined with the fiber blanket. I wanted it portable, as I take it in to my classroom to do occassional firings.
    That copper glaze, is probably the most metallic result I've seen.
    I love the Deco/ Nouveau aesthetic as well.

    Beautiful. I am new to Raku, is the water dunking necessary to the whole process or can you leave your pots in the reduction cans until they completely cool?

    • @corvusmoonpottery
      @corvusmoonpottery  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can leave them in reduction until they cool completely. Sometimes the amount of crazing on the white crackle pieces gets a little too abundant if left in reduction too long. Also the copper matte and luster colors tend to go wherever they want if left alone to cool.

    I REALLY like your little raku kiln and the chimney peephole. Is the fiber blanket pinned to the brick? Hard fire brick? The chinmey looks like regular brick The burner post is genius. I'm so doing that. I think I need a studio cat and a studio fishtank as well....

    • @corvusmoonpottery
      @corvusmoonpottery  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All of the bricks are regular brick. The ones making up the body of the kiln have a lot of shale in them and they do real well at high temperatures. The fiber blanket protects the face of the bricks because they are totally covered by it . The fiber blanket stiffens up after the first few firings so there's no need to pin it. Also the way the blanket is cut prevents it from sagging inward too much and I've used 'Ridgidizer' on it. - I have plans for this kiln on Etsy in a PDF - just look for Corvus Moon Pottery on Etsy.

    Please explain why you plunge in water while SO hot. Do you use a Raku Clay or just regular Clay.

    • @corvusmoonpottery
      @corvusmoonpottery  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Donna, in most cases we're using a copper bearing glaze that needs to be 'set' in order to have the colors stay the way they are. They will continue to change over a few minutes and might not look how we want them to if we don't stop them by 'quenching' them in water. The clay we're using is a heavily grogged, white raku earthenware clay

  • @cookieoriginals8319
    @cookieoriginals8319 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Lovely work, just learning pottery, I do china painting and working twords clay work. I see an open earthenware clay. does it have a name. so many it is hard to determine which to get. Your pieces have such defined lines between color and black. did you wax resist the artwork > is the black a glaze or carbon effect of the firing. VERY INSPIRING. ~~ THANKS/

    • @corvusmoonpottery
      @corvusmoonpottery  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Cookie, The clay body we use for Raku is actually called "White Raku" from L&R specialties. It's a very wide-range firing clay but will vitrify at cone 6. We don't use wax to separate the colors, ,Ruth just takes her time with a smaller brush. All the black is from carbon reduction - Thank you!

    • @corvusmoonpottery

  • @francescoschinaia3598
    @francescoschinaia3598 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    hello, your pieces are really interesting :) I make ceramics and I'm starting to study raku and watch and watch the video .. Can I ask you what you paint with enamel? and then in the photos at the end, we see the thickness of the veins of the leaves .. how is it possible if the enamel leaves? the smoke has no thickness - sorry for the bad English

    • @corvusmoonpottery
      @corvusmoonpottery  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Francesco, I'll try to explain if I'm understanding correctly. The black leaves are carved into the surface by Ruth (see beginning of video). When we glaze the piece, we leave the leaves untouched by the glaze which makes them black with carbon because of the raku process.

    • @francescoschinaia3598

      @@corvusmoonpottery I see my problem now. I was using the same basic recipe, but it was not nearly enough copper @ 2 - 2.5%. I would get some metallic effects but it was iffy. I’ll try this & hope it’s better. Will increasing the amount of copper make it more or less glossy?
