Mickey sometimes looks in awe a Bob Costas knowledge of baseball. I like seeing Bobs eyes get wide like a little kid when Mickey tells his stories about his career. Just a wonderful piece of video I've never seen before.
The 500 clubs in 1968 was like the 600 club now. If Mantle played in the Kingdome, Busch Stadium, Camden Yards or even present day Yankee Stadium, with the DH, he'd easily have accumulated 600 bombs.
I'm a Sox fan but even I love the Mick. So awesome we have some interviews like this, huh? Him talking about Ted Williams cracked me up. Ted's one criticism of Mantle was that Mickey went for Homers everytime. Then Mantle just smiles and goes "he was right. I was just wailin!I" love it.
Getting to 500 home runs used to mean something, because by the time you get to this point you're at the end of your. Career, and the body is worn out, so it's not supposed to be easy. That's why it meant something. The steroids, made it look to easy, it lacked the same emotional content. It was a foregone conclusion that they would do it.
God there are so many more on the list now.....Eddie Murray, Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire, Barry Bonds, Ken Griffey Jr, Rafael Palmero, Jim Thome, Frank Thomas, Gary Sheffield, Alex Rodriguez, David Ortiz, Albert Pujols, Miguel Cabrera.....missing anyone? As of December 2021 Nelson Cruz is the next closest to 500.....but with like 50-60 to go at his age I have my doubts. Adrian Beltre got close. He was oh so close to the coveted 500/3000 club
Costas was defending strikeouts being irrelevant in regards to sluggers saying as long as they have an equal number of walks to ks it's ok. Nowadays if a power hitter has a 2:1 strikeout to walk ratio that's a good number.
Mantle, for a decade, was the best of all time. Saw him play many times. His 1956 season was the best single season ever.
No it wasn't.

This is a great find. Absolutely love Mantle and his story telling. A fan of Costas as well.

MICKEY MANTLE without any injuries would have went past them all !
His biggest problem was the bottle, heavy drinker's usually burn out around 32-33.
Back when having 500 home runs meant a automatic ticket 🎫 to the HOF

Mantle would have been so great in the broadcasters booth with so many stories. Might have saved his life.
Mantle should have been 700hr class
Back before the Steroid Era destroyed the significance of this feat.......
Used to have this on VHS. I watched it at least 3 times a week for years when I was younger
And I bet broke like mine did
Wow this was awesome. Made me think of being a kid again in the 90’s
I love this stuff, Mickey was my baseball hero
He had it all, but nobody equals Ruth, imo.
Bob and Mickey had a bond whose roots may have started here
I owned this in the early 90s
COSTAS WAS THE BEST

Ah, fast forward to '21, there's a new kid is on the block...

He forgot to mention JOSH GIBSON WHO HIT 814 career homers
No one forgot anything.
Homers against Floyd the Barber and the Mayberry Mirthmakers don't count.
THEY DO COUNT@@TheBatugan77
Costas seems uncomfortable in this video. Almost superficial.
Ajo Joe That's because Micky was his idol & he was nervous to do this with him..
