Wow, it's no mystery Mitsuyoshi is a very talented composer and arranger. Above the fantastic execution and vocal performance, I think he captured Ryu's character very well in the sound design. Maybe even more so than the original, giving him a much heavier presentation. The original seemed much more melodramatic, which may have been how Ryu was perceived at the time.
The tone of this and the original from SFII World Warrior is very similar. They are both heavy, hard and melodramatic. Yoko Shimomura is a genius. So is Takenobu Mitsuyoshi. I would say he's the more melodramatic of the two.
A few times a year, I have to return to this to remind myself that the Sega god himself blessed us with an incredible cover of the most iconic theme from the best video game soundtrack of all time.
