More stuff I remembered! (might edit to add more later😂) Lack of spacing guild. It existed I guess, but wasn’t shown to be a powerful force in the universe. In part one, I did not like Stilgar’s actor. In part two I loved him. I liked the suspicion in the book that the emperor was afraid the baron might be trying to turn Arrakis into his own prison planet to combat the Sardaukar. Seemed like a legit thing to be worried about. I will also add that how good an adaptation is, is not a scale of how close it is to being just like the book. What makes a movie good is not necessarily what makes a book good, and sometimes trying to be too much like a book makes the movie worse. They are two different forms of storytelling. I think that is part of what made this adaptation good. They tried to make a good movie before they tried to please book fans.
I haven't read the books, but I have seen the other adaptations (have them on dvd but didn't rewatch before going to see these new movies) I would say part II is an improvement on part I. Villeneuve seems to have learned from from part I to better provide exposition for general audiances. Part II also benefits from having more set pieces and action scenes, so even though it's still a very talky & cerebral story it never gets "boring" for the plebeians and they get to keep up without being overly spoonfed or talked down to. I would say the improvements will hurt rather help part I on rewatches, the only draw for part I is seeing Oscar Isaac & Jason Momoa since Part II does a solid job of being self contained and setting up for Dune Messiah. Chani was handled really well. She is a departure from Chani in the books from what I understand but if the previous adaptations are anything to go by, I am so glad she is more than just the love intrest of the hero as well as a very strong story device getting that much needed exposition between her developing relationship with Paul and her side conversations with her friend. And her friend was a bad ass in her own right too despite her fate 😢 Princess Irulan on the other hand was disappointing compard to other adaptations. I was disappointed she wasn't in part I, what we got of her in part II isn't bad, but it just feels like it justifies my frustrations with Part I even more rather than scratching that itch. Best Princess Irulan is still Julie Cox in my opinion. I COULD NOT take Christopher Walken seriously as the Emperor 😂 "I want more" ... I literally said "cow bell" after he said that line. Walken has played very creepy and intemodating murderers before, so he could have brought those elements to this character at some points in his career. I'm not sure if Walken's health is deteriorating or if it was a character choice but he came off as a weak and confused old man in a way that made me more worried about the actor's health rather than believe him as the character. It could very well have been meant as a character choice but the fact that I can't tell isn't good. Maybe it's just me and other audience members easily see the performance as characterization. But I stand by the statement you can't have Walken say "I want more" unless you're deliberately referencing his SNL skit.
Good points about the emperor! In the book he’s always described as wearing his military uniform, so I would think that’s trying to display an image of strength. I’ve only seen the SNL skit once, so luckily that wasn’t on my mind😂
Also Lady Jessica: Spoilerish for future books/movies I felt like her characterization in part II did a decent job of showing her duel roles as mother and future villain. She was a bene gesserit before she was a mother and is using her role as Reverend Mother to help Paul. The scenes of her and Paul & Alia talking to each other was a little weird since Alia hasn't been born yet, on the other hand had a family dynamic that felt believable despite the strangeness. On the other hand, Jessica becomes something of a villain in Children of Dune so seeing her darker edge here in part II feels like the director is keeping future stories in mind and setting the ground work for them or at the very least looking to future books for his interpretations of the characters here in this earlier story.

That makes sense. I have not read Children yet, but I would rather have that spoiler than think they ruined Jessica‘s character somehow.
