- Regreening the planet looks at the profit that comes from the recovery of ecosystems in Spain, Egypt and India. Restoring ecosystems does not only generate ecological profit but also economic. In Regreening the desert, the makers of VPRO Backlight showed that the greening of deserts is very well possible. They followed the American-Chinese cameraman and ecologist John D. Liu.
He filmed how an inhospitable dry mountain area as large as the Netherlands was transformed into a lush green oasis. The greening caused not only ecological recovery but also economic growth of the region. Since then, John D. Liu has traveled the world to inspire people in other countries to follow this example.
Dutch ecologist Willem Ferwerda was inspired by Liu and decided to work together with him. This cooperation has grown into a new organization, Commonland, a foundation with a clear mission: to restore the ecosystems on a large scale worldwide. The point of departure is that restoring landscapes not only yields ecological profits but also money, work and hope for the people living there.
We can see that this works in Egypt: in 1977 Dr. Ibrahim Abouleish SEKEM, experimented to green the desert at Cairo. In 2014, SEKEM has grown to be the leading supplier of ecological products in Egypt and far beyond. Dr. Abouleish has built not only a flourishing business in the desert but a complete community with schools and their own medical and cultural facilities. A better proof that greening and social innovation go hand in hand is almost impossible to find.
That all areas can grow alive, even if they are completely eroded by erosion, also appears from the special story of Indian Jadav "Molai" Payeng. When he was 17, he worked for a replanting project in Assam province. After the project was completed and the other laborers had disappeared, he decided to continue propagating wood by hand. Now, Molai forest is 300 acres and populated by elephants, Bengal tigers, deer, rhino and numerous birds. Payeng is also called The Forest Man in India because he has been able to create a jungle singlehandedly.
That is something that Spain might well use. Large areas in Spain are dry and abandoned due to misused agricultural subsidies, unintentional water and land use and large-scale erosion. The population is turning its back on the countryside and moves to the cities, but there is also unemployment there. In Ayoo de Vidriales, a graying village in the middle of Spain, agricultural engineer Pedro Alonso Fernandez has begun to recover land. He wants to show that the Spanish silted and eroded soils are in fact Green Gold.

soil culture is a forgotten art here in the Aude. 'gardening' practices here actively erode the soil and it's ability to retain moisture. I'm attempting to teach soil renewal techniques to the copropriete's jardiniers.
I've a patch that is actively holding moisture and keeping the salt down.
bananas don't like dry or salt, yet I have neglected bananas holding their own against 50%humidity winds.
the pre-existing laurels were on the point of dying after two years of lack of water, bounced back.
it was just a case of putting organic material back into the topsoil and watering it flat again.
I have a good worm population were there were none.

I can't get enough of these greening the earth, restoring ecosystem videos. I've known about this for decades but I haven't really known about it. Now I really want to know about it. I want to live it. I want to do it.
I love these kinds of documentaries. I wish the Australian goivernment would do something similar in central australia
Hudson Jaxson - Did you know that Lake Ayer (far below Sea level) can be connected to the Ocean ? Seawater could flow in and out with the tides. This huge surface of water would evaporate trillions of gallons, creating clouds and rain. This would cool the air and make possible a HUGE green area in the middle of Austrailia.

Let's do it. There is cheap land all over the place I have scouted a few areas-- In Los Angeles county sub 10k .
Urban garden is best. On top of buildings, empty lots and your backyards. It will cost you a fortune to get water to the desert til it can sustain itself. The hole country has to be on board with this for it to work. But it's a real good idea.

good luck! do you know about geoff lawtons greening the desert? it's best to start out small, as a demonstrations site. you'll still be needing exterior water.

Arizona is a perfect place for doing something like this. Some people are already doing this in their yards and on their general property.
I love the concept of regreening deserts, it has such a positive impact in so many ways.

Super inspiring, having done something like this, digging, charring etc to make water-reservoirs, and soil for more forest,, but ecological succession from barren beginnings to this, hand-tool like I did, is not even remotely comparable. Impressive beyond description, the man has more grit, than grit itself

Excellent documentary. Very inspirational. How can a simple man like Jadeth Payang (SP?) (29.30) have so much ecological insight while we, with our sophisticated education systems have no clue?

Probably greed and a corrupt education system. Liberal universities seem to be more occupied with pushing political agendas then teaching true nutrition, things like this documentary, etc.
Agriculture is the real foundation of all civilizations, cultures, and wellbeing whether it is a small community or a nation. All ancient cultures who survived had well maintained bio diversity, and agriculture practices.

Great way to start for any of us who are near or affected by these problems. "A man who planted trees " is a wonderful story with the same premise. The reforestation of the planet in areas that were forested has been proven over and over now to be possible. A garden of Eden of sorts is only a few seeds sown away.

I don't understand the European policy to subsidize "farmers" for merely plowing the land. That policy should be changed. Why don't they subsidize based on production? Instead they are merely encouraging erosion and destroying the land further. That Indian man is a hero. The world needs more people like him. In China, they are in the process of restoring the Loes Plateau, an area the size of France that became degraded after centuries over mismanagement, and they are succeeding. As the world goes forth, we need more of these efforts, but instead we are seeing places like the US electing a president who couldn't care less about environmental issues. The only green he sees is money.

However there's got to be millions of places around the world where just damming water minimally would enrich the ecosystem all around it. Just a few logs and rocks, and there's an immediate productive irrigation of the land around it. And the effect is improved throughout the years. And that's just one way to enrich it, that's mostly without an economical cost.
Thank you, for a great video with lots of inspirational examples and initiatives. I believe that there's a beautiful opportunity to regreen large amounts of land that are laid bare right now.

OK, haven't watched it yet, but first of all I want to thank vpro documentary for a small detail. You uploaded the clip in 2017 and actually managed to put the correct year when it was made in the title. BRAVO! It's hard to believe how many other content providers simply aren't capable of that courtesy, and how incredibly irritating this is for anyone interested in looking for contemporary documentaries.
Again, honestly, BRAVO. ..... I'll proceed watching the clip now.

It was a hopeful message, that I enjoyed watching. Can't say too much about the content, as it is not exactly my area of expertise.
You clearly steered away from all areas of political controversy, and there is certainly something to say about the Communist Party of China or Paul Kagame's treatment of political opposition. I think that editorial decision can be understood, as you wanting to concentrate on the possibilities of ecological restoration, but it still left me a bit at unease.
I didn't know any one was doing this on a large scale.. My dreamed has come true. One I see we need to and can do this in the U.S. people need to be sure to support and restore all of their native plants...cultivated and wild. It is now 2017, I wonder how this is Doing. I seriously believe the U.S. needs to revolutionize it's agriculture.

where does all the water come from, in my country (Australia) they have been growing food in desert areas for many years, The result has been a dried up river system (The Murray Darling basin) with loss of habitat, for many species, dying giant red gum trees and not enough water downstream to fill the lower lakes, the river mouth has even closed

I can not imagine Saudi Arabia is green in August. It's only rain in winter after the rain it's become green for two months. I hope this program help. I really like to thank all this people how work in this program.

This Egyptian model is a wonderful idea for any culture or Spirituality and it does have some similarity to what some of the Native Citizens are doing in some small way that they can afford or bring about . The people in this video, especially the man in India (who brought tears to my eyes), are doing what the Dutch man called "inspiration investment". They are providing the inspiration for the rest of us, every one of us who comes here & is moved by this video. Don't let their hard work of inspiration investment go to waste! Use the inspiration you feel watching this to make changes in your own life. Then YOU will be the source of inspiration for the people around you, just like these people in the video are a source of inspiration for us.
Spread the word, do little things. Grow your own tomatoes in a bucket garden. Teach your children how to grow plants from seed. Plant a new tree in your back yard. Clean up the garbage in your neighbourhood. Discipline yourself to stop spending money on new new new everything. Separate your identity from your stuff, so you can be happy buying less. SPREAD THE WORD.

I read about stabilizing Sahara desert sand dunes with an oil product and then reforesting it in Scientific American in 1963. I was impressed but I didn't keep track so I'm guessing it's about finished now after 55 years. Is Sahara desert reforested ?
How important was it to deliver water to this project / Could it survive without an input of water? I understand that the higher the Co2 concentration in the air the less water plants need. Any comments?
That said, all deserts are not candidates. The Precautionary Principle needs to be considered. For example, the Taklamakhan desert is the dust seed source for rainfall events in the western USA
