    I'm thinking about adding a hitch to my 2014 Explorer. Any recommendations?

    • @Dr.SalvatoreVinciguerra
      @Dr.SalvatoreVinciguerra  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would try to get a class 3 hitch that can pull between 4-5,000 pounds. Ford may only want to put on a class 2 hitch, but a real trailer hitch person can put on a larger hitch for you. Don't forget about a weight distribution hitch that would help distribute the weight across all of the axels. Have a great day.

    Thanks for video
    How do you do pulling the TT in mountains? And what speed you do on interstates?
    We have a highlander v6 5000lbs towing. Some interstates have 80mph, I’d imagine pulling 65max so it would seem safety concern going that slow on a 80mph road.

    • @Dr.SalvatoreVinciguerra
      @Dr.SalvatoreVinciguerra  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello! I would highly recommend not going the speed limit past 55-65 etc. Even people with Pick-ups have done studies where if they go past that speed then you are going to burn through gas at an excessive rate. Plus the possibility of you not having proper stopping control with your vehicle in an emergency situation. I would highly suggest going below the speed limit by 5 to 10 miles especially in the mountains.
      The Explorer did a pretty good job with the V-6. However, I do see the need for a V-8 having more power. Also, a heavier tow vehicle can be to your advantage in certain situations. I recently upgraded the Explorer to an F-150 and I do see the all around experience is better. Still you do need to go the speed limits that I posted if you want to save on gas.
      Let me know if you have anymore questions. Thanks for watching and commenting on my video. Have a fantastic day! Salvatore Vinciguerra

    Did you add the hitch? Or did yours come with the tow package?

    • @Dr.SalvatoreVinciguerra
      @Dr.SalvatoreVinciguerra  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My Ford Explorer did not come with a tow package. I had to add it, but be carefully who installs it for you as the wiring was an issue and I had to bring it to Ford and have it corrected. If you look at one of my videos on 2019 Ford models, the new 2019 Ford Explorer Sport does come with the Tow package included as well as some other safety features. Be careful though of the hitch that Ford installs as they only wanted to install a 3,000 lb hitch and I was able to get someone to install a 5,000 lb hitch. The weight of my Sonic is about 3,200 and loaded up is a little more than this so it is great match and handles well even going through portions of the lower Smokey Mountains in Chattanooga and up through Nashville. Thanks for watching my video and have a great day.

    Hey, Salvatore. Thank you so much for putting up this video that I've been looking for!
    I have the exactly same Explorer like yours, and am looking into towing a small travel trailer. How do you maximize it's towing capacity to 5000 lbs, as the manual says the max is just 2000 lbs without a factory towing package (class3 hitch/4-7pin connector/oil cooler)? much appreciations.

    • @Dr.SalvatoreVinciguerra
      @Dr.SalvatoreVinciguerra  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hello Jia. My Ford dealer here in Miami, Florida would not install a Class 3 hitch on my Explorer and they were going to charge me the same amount of money or more to install a smaller hitch on the Explorer. Luckily the travel trailer dealer had a trailer place close to them that would install a Class 3 hitch on my Explorer nearby. I went to a similar dealer in West Palm Beach, Florida and they had a trailer hitch installation workshop on site. The people who sold me the hitch informed me that I should not tow too much over 4000 pounds. My trailer weights about 3,300 pounds dry without being loaded. So this set-up worked for me. Keep in mind that I also have a weight distribution hitch and this has also worked out well. I did ask if the air cooler or anything else needed to be upgraded and I was told no. I have a V-6 and so far the Explorer has done well with towing. Let me know if you have any other questions about the towing with the Ford Explorer. Thanks for watching and commenting on my video. Salvatore, Thank you for your video which helps me a lot. I'm looking into getting a trailer with 4100 lbs dry weight and I wonder if that would be fine for my 2018 Explorer. It's capable of towing 5000 lbs and I would take care of not getting above 4500 lbs with our trailer in total.
    Would you mind sharing how much weight in total your trailer had loaded with your Explorer and how well driving turned out?
    Thanks!

    • @Dr.SalvatoreVinciguerra
      @Dr.SalvatoreVinciguerra  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello, The weight of the trailer is about 3,500 lbs dry weight. I allowed for at least 1000 lbs or more to load the trailer. Sorry I have never weighed the trailer loaded to see how much it weighs. I also have a weight distribution hitch and sway bar. This really helps out with steering and control of the trailer.
      To give you a better understanding of what the weight could amount to for your trailer, you should look up how much the propane tanks weigh, spare tire, how much do the water tanks weigh if they are fully loaded etc. for your trailer. So add up first what is needed to make your trailer work etc. Then, I would add up extras, your gear, etc. I am recently adding a carrier to the bumper that can hold 350 lbs. I'm not going to fully load it up. The generator is about 100 lbs. and then a few gallons of gas etc. Also, keep in mind the more weight the less fuel efficient you will be on the road.
      Personally, if I were you I would try to get a trailer a few hundred pounds lighter than what you are looking at. This way it will give you more flexibility for loading your trailer. When I was looking at trailers the dealers wanted to put me in bigger trailers that were about 4500 lbs. I knew that this was too close to the weight limit and wouldn't be good. You should really think about "What are you going to do with your trailer? How will it be used?" What kind of camping? etc. and explore videos and talk to people that travel with trailers. I have a really nice bathroom, and a dinette, but they really aren't needed.
      Also, make sure you have a V6 engine. If not you may want to ask the dealer about pulling 3500 with an engine with less power.
      Some things I have been looking into is changing my tow vehicle. The new 2022 Ford Explorers can now pull 500 lbs more than the current ones on the market. This isn't much, but it is better than some other vehicles of similar sizes. The Infiniti Qx60 AWD Autograph can pull 6000 lbs because it's V6 and the all wheel drive.
      I hope the information that I have provided helps you. Let me know if you have any other questions as there is not too much information about the Explorer pulling travel trailers. However, I have seen Explorers pull campers a lot bigger than the one I have on the road. Thanks for watching and commenting on my video.
      Have a great day!

      @@Dr.SalvatoreVinciguerra Thank you so much for getting back to my comment so quick! I appreciate your input very much.
      I know that I'd be pushing limits with a 4200 lbs dry weight trailer on my Explorer. I did the math and regarding GCWR limits I wouldn't be able to load a lot of stuff at all. I'd try to limit the loaded trailer weight to 4500 lbs just to stay below the Explorer limit. Everything else had to go into the car. It's just the two of us and we don't need much stuff.
      I'd love to buy a F250 ut you can't get any at the moment. The trailer I'm looking at would be sufficient for our needs even if we had a bigger truck. I just trying to avoid starting with a small trailer which I would want to replace once my F250 is available (hopefully) next year. On the other hand, trailer prices are very low and the trailer would be a great deal.
      So it would be some months living near the maximum with the Explorer until a bigger car is available, but we could keep the trailer.
      I was just wondering if the 80/20 rule was established just out of being overly careful and whether a loaded weight of 4500 lbs on an Explorer is still manageable for shorter trips in (mostly) plain Texas roads.
      Have a great day too and thanks again,
      Heinz

Back up camera is a must. OK questions; How much does the coach weigh dry and how cold is the A/C can the A/C capture 71-73 inside the coach and is it 13btu or higher? Hello Jesse. I did ask the technician who installed the hitch about needing a transmission cooler. I was informed that because the Explorer is a V-6 that it did not need it. I have not had any problems with the Transmission in the past 3 years of towing the trailer. I don't get any sagging in the rear as the weight distribution hitch does a great job. The Sonic weighs about 3,300 pounds dry. The air conditioner is a standard Colemans Mach with 13,500 BTU and it does a great job of cooling. I love watching the Traveling Robert. • @Dr.SalvatoreVinciguerra
      @Dr.SalvatoreVinciguerra  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do not know the exact numbers for gas mileage. However, I do think like with many other people who tow that they should keep the speed around 55-60. Going over means you would really burn through you gas a lot quicker than normal. I would say that you could go about 4-5 hours on a tank of gas. The explorer does not struggle at all when put in the right gear. I have a V-6 and have not had any problems traveling through the mountains in North Georgia and Tennessee. Part of the reason Texas sells so many RVs is #1 Population, and also the number of people who live in RVs while working the oil fields. FYI a class 3 hitch is an option on the Explorer (with V6 or V6 EcoBoost ) and that is how you should order the car (it is somewhat difficult but not impossible to find them on lots)

    • @DrIanMcDowell
      @DrIanMcDowell 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Dr.SalvatoreVinciguerra Yes, I just wanted to let you know the class 3 is an option (most class 2 hitches are found on the 4cyl version) the problem is most dealers do not order them with the class 3, so they are hard to find. The reason you want to try to order the explorer with the class 3 receiver already installed is the manufacture installed option includes both 4 and 7 pin connectors (the hitch receiver hides behind a removable bumper cover) and it also includes an upgraded engine oil cooler. Of coarse if you do after market, one way to help with engine oil might be to run a really high grade synthetic (I also am not a mechanic, I just know some people who do alot of towing and they suggest using a high grade synthetic - not sure how much it will help). Plus the option is fairly cheap for what you get. $570 - Still good video lets people know its still capable even if you need to do aftermarket.

      Salvatore Vinciguerra I’m split between the 2019 explorer xlt and 2019 Grand Cherokee Laredo E. I’m going to be hauling a Wolf Pup 16fq. (4kgvw) Either SUV should be up for the task.
      I’ve had better reliability from my F150’s than any Dodge I’ve ever owned. Slam dunk, right? No.
      The local Ford service department is inept and lazy.
      Both SUV’s have total redesigns coming for 2020. So right now is the best time to buy a new old model.
      Jeep accepted my offer of $25k and Ford accepted my offer of $27k. My big problem is I like them both, they both drive well.
      I’m leaning slightly towards the Jeep because it’s rated at a 6200lb Tow Capacity.
      And in my mind this over qualification will pay out in reliability.
