When Teena sings it feels like you're in Church baby!! I know Rick produced her and all but every time they introduce her they introduce her as Ricks protoge' and like... by now she earned the right and had written enough songs to "stand on her own" without mentioning that each and every damn time...Anyway I love you Teena and I know you are with our Heavenly Father right now which makes me very very happy in the midst of my sadness (sigh) R.I.P. My Teena, Angel, God Bless
I already loved "my sista" for all the years of beautiful music she brought the world. Now, I love her even more. Why?, u ask. Well, didn't u just hear what I heard. Her entire speech was giving thanks to God for the many blessings that He has showered her with thru out her life. THAT WAS A BEAUTIFUL THING. I can't recall ANYONE having ever done that b4. That just spoke volumes. Today is 12/29/2010, that precious, abundantly blessed "angel" is no longer w/us.
Blessed her sweet heart. I am so glad that she was recognized for her contribution to R&B music before she passed on. It was obvious that she was thankful for all her blessings and the love that was shown to her by her fans and others. Sleep well, sweet Lady! We will all see and hear you soon.
Lady T, Rest In Eternal Peace. I Too Pray For My Mother To Live A Long Life, She's 70 Now, I Wish For Her To Live To Your Mother's Age. God Bless Your Daughter For Being Born On Christmas Day But That God Needed You In His Heavenly Choir And So He Called You Up On December 26th 2010, The Day After Your Daughter's Birthday, She Discovered You Went Home To God. I Was Given My Son In December, He's 7 Now And He's One of My Biggest Blessings. God Bless You For Your Musical Legacy That You Left Us...
Two of my favourite ladies - Teena Marie and the amazing Betty Wright. And I thought it was great that she was so flattered to have known that other amazing talent, Chaka Khan.
So happy Teena Marie received this award in her lifetime as she deserves every accolade and hope she has star on walk of fame and if not, for shame because this legendary genius incomparable as composer, musician, performer and a voice that defies description with tremendous depth of emotion...gone too soon, Lady T your extraordinary presence will be missed and love and prayers to Alia Rose and the family...your mama is the ultimate! RIP sweet lady of soul...
Danymity Yes, she was so grateful for all she was blessed with. Too sad , many do not say they are thankful enough for what they have and are able to do.
@Blueskywatcher Teena knew undoubtidly how much she was loved by her family, best friends and fans..and I'm certain her daughter knows this..she knows how special mommy was..thats the thing that gives me comfort. We have her wonderful music to listen to over and over again. :-)
God Bless You, Teena Marie! And, thank you for giving and sharing with us so much of your love, talent and creativity. At last, after all these years, you are starting to be recognized for your MAJOR contribution to the music world and this recognition is only the beginning; there will be more, much more. The world will know Teena Marie, and you will finally receive the RECOGNITION you have always DESERVED!!! I LOVE YOU, TEE TEE!!!
"Lady T"! "The Ivory Queen"! Rest In Peace, Songbird! "The black community gave you your title because you earned it"! You will never be forgotten you because you stayed with black people when many tried to copy and duplicate them and even robbed them in so many countless ways! You will never be honored enough!
Teenia Marie daserv that award and many more well of course Jazz& BLUES are my favorite and til this day and many more there neva be a rythem and Blues singer like Mrs. Teenia Marie ever no more
@phillyTne I am familiar with the songs you mentioned; in fact, I ADORE "Ebony Eyes" with Smokey Robinson. It was a beautiful message of adoration to all black women. Yes, Rick did write love songs and political songs as well. However, I still feel that Teena was a superior musician.
I loved black women of R&B, and one day I bought a Teena Marie album and was shocked she was a white women. She became my favorite out singing the black women of R&B, very special women
@SmoothCinnamonX I saw an Unsung video clip of Teena on this site. She tell's how Rick James took credit for writing the lyrics to Deja Vu. Back then she was so enamored of Rick, she'd failed to realize what James had done--stolen one of Teena's poems. Listen to the words & you know that no man could have written them, least of all James. The words were Teena's! You feel her spirit in them. Deja vu is filled with who Teena was & is. So I say enuf about Rick James! Teena was the true artist!!
Wow... so overwhelming Lady t has arrived. She finally got that recognition as a musician songwriter and producer of her own music. So so proud 👏 Absolutely astonishing moment. And not to deminsh her own credit in that honor but if rick had not decided to produce her first record none of it would be possible. She sat on a shelf for 3 years only rick took that chance to work with her. And yes in his wilder days he was jealous i think as he reali?ed she didnt need him to hold her up and maybe she was getting more attention. But as he matured as a musician and got sober he was nothing but proud of her accomplishments. He truly loved her... they may have been lovers but it wasnt very long. I believed that bond was so deep on that creative level that it became much more like they are family. She raised his son for petes sake you dont get closer or trust someone more than that. I think it took teena a long time to get over him though... but she knew in the end he couldnt be what she needed... committed to only her. In watching them through the years in video concerts clips you can see that mutual respect passion and enduring love ❤️ that doesnt go away once you make that connection. They are now together again in GODs house. Thats just beautiful, no egos or pettiness they can just be who they are.❤❤❤❤❤❤ Rip lady T and king of funk 🙏
They were soul mates and he was her mentor. Perhaps she would have found a way without him but his guidance and love are an indelible part of her legacy.
funny how Iris made it seem like Motown did so much for her but Teena Marie apparently sued Motown to get out of her contract. And her case set a precedent for other artists to get out of unfair contracts. her body language towards Iris was contradictory to both their words.
Pretty crass and classless for Iris Gordy to spend more time talking about Rick James than Teena Marie at an award banquet in honor of TEENA MARIE. Shame really. Hope and trust that Teena felt the love and appreciation for Teena and Teena's talent and not for the over-played story of Rick James as her "mentor". Gone, but not forgotten. Love ya Teena.
Chaka is a modern day influence but the real influences go back to Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holiday, Josephine Baker, Lena Horne, Clara Ward, Mahalia Jackson, Eartha Kitt, Ruth Brown, Etta James, Dionne Warwick, Della Reese. Can't name them all but these are the women who stared Jim Crow right in his eyes.
I wasn't talkin about their Civil Rights influence either. I was just saying somebody had to influence Chaka first. At a time those women were performing, Jim Crow was the way of the world. The real truth here is the whole music industry including Chaka should be thanking Teena Marie for creating The Brockert Initiative.
Chaka has influenced damn near the entire music industry! Now all you other's out there who use to be ashamed to admit Chaka was their North Star of music-It's cool to claim her now! LOL!!!
@vuman40a True true all! Teena was really THE best overall female musicians perhaps. She's like Joni Mitchell, Chaka Khan, and Sarah Vaughan all in one.
You are definately right... but well into the 70s... the younger artists were STILL staring Jim Crow in the eye. Let's remember Michael Jackson was the 1st on MTV and Prince the 2nd. LOL
Yeah but you can't really compare not being on MTV to not being able to vote or even drink from a certain water fountain. Yes the younger artist did break down barriers but it had to start somewhere. We all stand on each other shoulders and that is how we reach for the stars.
You are right to a certain degree - but we are talking about music. We must remember - not being able to enter an MTV studio - is that not the same as being able to sit in the front of the bus... Being able to use the MTV restroom - Hello? - So yes, if it were not for the fore-fathers and their fore-fathers.... It was AND STILL IS a progression.
So glad the R&B Foundation didn't NOT honor Teena just because she's white. She is so talented and there are lots of white women who sing her praises, too and truly do understand her.
That's all well & fine poo poo but I was referring to Chaka being a musical influence to generations of singers after she came out-Not Chaka's civil rights influence.I didnt hear Tina asking GOD to meet any of those singers you mentioned & most of them were living when "Ask Rufus" came out!Not reading-Just being REAL!
When Teena sings it feels like you're in Church baby!! Teena is known as The Ivory Queen of Soul for a reason and she bares that title very well. God bless her.
Charlene: You got to RESPECT anyone who gives the glory to the almighty!!!! Teena was a gifted and wonderful person. Love always......

R.I.P Teena I'm glad she got award she really deserved it!

Thats outstanding giving rick a prop like that, but seems she didnt need him.
They were soul mates and he was her mentor. Perhaps she would have found a way without him but his guidance and love are an indelible part of her legacy.
💐I REMEMBER THE LATE TEENA MARIE🥀
Very true.
funny how Iris made it seem like Motown did so much for her but Teena Marie apparently sued Motown to get out of her contract. And her case set a precedent for other artists to get out of unfair contracts. her body language towards Iris was contradictory to both their words.
brideshead1921 ok now move on like teena and iris did

Stop talking about yourself & how you were the one that got Teena the break, ENOUGH! I want to hear Lady T speak.
@vuman40a EXACTLY, DAMN!! LOL!!
So glad the R&B Foundation didn't NOT honor Teena just because she's white. She is so talented and there are lots of white women who sing her praises, too and truly do understand her.
So True! Chaka Doesn't Either!! They Need To Form A Club!!!
