    Brings back memory's of my pirate radio days, late 1990's, we brought our first 5watt transmitter from Veronica kits (don't think there on the go now), then we brought a stereo board kit, we thought we was the bees knees, even having a m8 across town re-broadcasting us on a different frequency, then we was busted, due to a neighbor reporting us :( . Hopefully when they make all fm stations in the uk go digital us old timers can use the airwaves again :)

    In my city there is 1 rock station that's been playing the same list of classic rock for over 40 years now. It's always the same songs.😩 So I pump out songs that most people forgot about. A lot of Ten Years After and Slade My Oh My etc etc Stones songs that never get played etc

    TOKO S18 coils and 2N4427's... The good old days. Sadly lacking in the output filter department though.

      This tx I brought many years ago. Probably back in 96/97 it’s actually an 100w worked really well. Turned Down now to 50 and back up in the loft 👍

      @threeMetreJim Most of pirate rigs were pretty good. I took a few to work over the years to test on their spectrum analyser (ironically i worked for Met police repairing their radios). I never saw anything worse than -55dB down and most products were in the noise. Its surprising how one or two tuned power amp stages filter out harmonics. Most pirate builders knew what they were doing and made stable clean rigs.

    Unlike PLL, free running VCO drifts frequency from time to time, and it has spurious harmonics causes interference to other devices.

      Yes this was an old transmitter from the 90’s was nice to see it up and running again, only happened due to the lockdown

    Nice video. Btw you dont need to calibrate the meter for taking power readings, that's just for getting accurate swr readings

    Driver board looks very familiar. Sure its one of the late Roger Howe's designs from 80s.

      I put mine in one of those long quality street tins with a 1/4 inch jack on one end and SO259 aerial socket at other and gave to my girlfriend as she was part of the south east London radio scene and had own studio. I think i drew out Roger's design and will be around here somewhere. I remember mine had a choke in collector of output transistor which one in your video doesn't appear to have, but apart from that looks the same. Certainly a 80's rig with the linear power supply and huge capacitor. That was the only way at the time. Happy days😁

    I know you didn't build it yourself, but do you have any idea what the purpose of the giant capacitor in the case is? Is it to smooth the rectified output from the transformer?

      Years ago ! As I don’t broadcast any more only into a dummy load... But on a 50watt in a build area was getting out a good 10/15 miles... Get that aerial nice and high the better... What 50watt have you brought? Have fun mate.

      Its all in the aerial height. Get it on a 20 story tower block or 3 story building on top of a hill and 10 watts can do 25 miles easily. I used to run 100 Watts watts from a derelict building at Crystal Palace reports were saying stronger that Capital radio. As i was mono and Capital in stereo, that is probably possible due to loosing 10dB signal to noise for stereo.

    You cannot operate that 24hours continiously, heat sink is insufficient your final RF transistor will blow quickly.

    • @HowardKlein1958
      @HowardKlein1958 ปีที่แล้ว

      Experience proves otherwise. We always used a fan on PA even if not built in, it was arranged to blow air over heat sink on air. You got to understand these were throw away rigs and we didn't waste money on unnecessary parts. Often soldered in coax directly to output rather than waste a expensive plug and socket. Never used a mains plug either. Straight in lift room socket with a technique i wont repeat here.
