  • 1964 Pontiac 389 tripower 348 HP from the factory with 10.75 - 1 compression. Now will run on 91 octane pump gas. The engine now has a dished piston to bring compression down to 9.5 - 1. To get the HP back up we ported the heads and done a competition valve job improving the flow 30+ cfm over stock. We also installed a roller cam and lifters with full roller rockers to compliment the cylinder head work. She is making 400 + HP now and can be driven anywhere across the country on premium pump fuel found at any station.

    Me and my grandpa are putting together this exact engine even with the tri power on it but, the engine came from a 64 Bonneville that played in Savannah smiles

    So glad that you preserved such a sweet running mill and allowed it to live on so that others can see what Detroit Iron was all about. But the hyd. cam with the solid lifters stumps me. But you obviously got it to work. Helped an old friend out with his 65 Goat who pooched a 10 bolt rear end with a 400 RAM air IV. sold him a 12 bolt out of a 68 Vista Cruiser. Problem solved. Love the detail and the exh. note.

      Thank you sir for the Kudos :) We have been using solid lifters on Hydraulic rollers for awhile now. The reason we do this is because the aftermarket hydraulic lifters are hit or miss when it comes to noise and bleed off. We use solids and run the lash tight .004 to .006" and they run quieter and don't bleed off, it just works better for us.

    Not all 389 inch motors with 3 carbs were 348 HP. There was a 318 HP Version also.

      There was , but it was used in the big cars not the GTO.

    I just bought a stock 62, stock Grand Prix. It’s the small 4 barrel motor but i5 only ha# about 15 pounds of oil pressure at idle. Judging b6 your motor I’m guessing that’s too low if gauge is correct?

    • @DonJohnstonDCIMotorsports
      @DonJohnstonDCIMotorsports 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Richard, your oil pressure is fine. Pontiac's usually idle after hot around 7 to 15 pounds depending on weight of oil. Our engines idle a little higher because we blueprint all of our oil pumps and tighten up the clearances.

      @@DonJohnstonDCIMotorsports Yea! Thanks so much for letting me know. Nothing like blowing a tidy sum and then noticing something you did not catch prior to writing the check. So far so good. I had to sell my first 62 GP the day before I got drafted into the Army 1965 and always wanted another.

      Oh okay. I was inquiring because I just order a custom comp HR with 3316 and 3317 lobes on a 112 LSA for my 455 and was curious about idle character compared to this engine

    Anyone know what type of oil to use for a 1965 GTO straight 6? I can't find my manuel.. thanx in Advance ❤😊

      Our oil has changed so much since that engine was built and actually for the better. I would recommend you use Lucas Hot Rod 10 W 40 with high zinc.

      There is no need to dyno every engine we build. I have been building engines for 39 years and have dynoed my fair share, but just to get a dyno sheet for a daily driver or show car build is not needed. My clients do not all come to see how much HP they can get. Their biggest concern is having it built right for dependability. :)

    Hey genius are you telling us you can't run a 10 :0 motor on pump gas ?? Well if it was you who talked him out of that compression ratio you threw away HP for no reason..
