Some species of a dolphin equivalent to teenagers hang out in fairly large groups. They search for a particular species of pufferfish (blowfish). When they find one, a dolphin will mouth the fish in order to make it inflate. When the fish inflates, it releases a toxin that get the dolphins high. I watched a clip that showed them literally passing the pufferfish around, so each dolphin could get a hit. When they're done, they let the pufferfish go, completely unharmed. Perhaps it's in a slight state of shock for a while after. However, it lives to puff another day. It's easily the best wildlife footage I've ever watched. 🤣
Most dolphins (including Bottlenose) are saltwater only, however in the Amazon and in China there are freshwater river dolphins. Very cool build! If Planet Zoo added whales and dolphins I would buy the game becuase they're my favourite but without them the game just can't entice me.
@@secondsquirrel1168 There are plenty of storytelling ways to get around it like Rudi has done. Much of the same could be said about almost any animal.
In the book, The Meg, they were building an open ocean structure to study migrating humpback. They built an enticing area that would encourage wild whales to swim through. It was sealable, so it could contain whales, with volume measured in miles. And since it was off shore, it had the salt water of the pacific.
I wanted say thank you so much for making some great, correct points. I love how you pointed out how important training is for mental stimulation and care and how dolphins are not candidates for release. this is such important information to share and normalize. Your habitat also greatly represents many features that exist in bottlenose dolphin habitats today. I did want to give my two cents that breeding is not inherently a bad thing. as you mentioned they’re an incredibly social species and allowing them to reproduce is a great benefit to their social welfare. as someone who does believe cetaceans can thrive under human care i think you pointed out many of the reasons of why this possible under the correct care. space is not always the greatest factor in welfare and as you pointed out are many other factors that can contribute to positive welfare for these guys :)
As a dolphin trainer who enjoys using this game for creative ideas as far as creating my dream dolphin habitats, I’m THRILLED to see someone with as big of a reputation as Rudi in this platform being brave enough to tackle a controversial topic like a dolphin habitat. I’m so pleased to see others expressing their creative ideas for dolphin habitats. 👏🏻👏🏻
Jeez. So many salty folks in your comments lately Ruds, I wish you well. Thanks for content and honesty throughout. I appreciate it, as well as many others do too. X
I love seeing another video about something unique and different for your zoo. The build is beautiful and you did something really cool. To me this however isn’t really ethical since I feel like the enclosure is big but not huge, as far as ethics go.. seeing an enclosure like this irl would definitely make me feel sad for the dolphins..
@@RudiRennkamelWell they still need more space, because I don’t want to say this in a rude way, but you literally cannot have “enough”space for dolphins to be held in captivity. Whales cannot be held in captivity, even dwarf whales that are 4ft, and as I said, dolphins.
‘Ethical’ is a moot point tbh, unless you’re depth is a couple of hundred metres and they have enough range of a fair few miles it wouldn’t come close to mimicking the habitat a bottlenose lives in. That’s the reason most zoos don’t have cetaceans in captivity anymore… these creatures are migratory and suffer from depression in captivity, hence why the dorsal fin ends up drooping…
Just to clarify. I am aware of that, that's what I said. In general your argumtation is valid for all animals. It's not about cetaceans or not. The sole reason they're not held more often is costs. Not will. My attempt is to conserve those speciments that are bred in captivity across Europe that can't be reintroduced
@ fair enough and the reason most Zoo’s don’t have cetaceans is it’s illegal, cost doesn’t come into it. Also dolphinariums have been proved to be barbaric and not in the interest of the animal. However, beached dolphins that would’ve lost their lives and are saved and taken into captivity to preserve their lives is about the only time it is ethical. We also know that releasing them to the wild isn’t a viable solution as Keiko suffered greatly until he passed away when the reality of Free Willy was tried out, despite the rehabilitation team’s best efforts. I’ve met Dr Ingrid Visser whom is a leading researcher into Orca in New Zealand and the only viable way for a dolphin (all 35, some sources say 42 although I think they include porpoise) species to exist is in the wild. The very practice of having one in captivity is usually when a calf is stolen from its mother or the matriarch and some adults end up getting destroyed in the process, it is a barbaric practice that Thea fully is illegal and lobbied against in parliament… so this is a contradiction and you cannot keep dolphin’s ethically… even rescued dolphins decrease their lifespan dramatically in captivity due to the very fact that these animals are as intelligent and diverse as we are… This is a subject I’m passionate about as I’m a Scuba diver and I’ve had the fortune to be able to see many dolphins in the wild on numerous occasions. Other animals kept in captivity can increase their life expectancy due to the aid we provide. But there is no benefit to keeping cetaceans in captivity. And while you may know this, not everyone is aware….
@@RudiRennkamel and I have a busy life with many things happening so I’m sorry if I didn’t hang off your every word. You’re a father, imagine that but you’re a grandfather with twins and your grandson in the house… just be grateful I even watched and I’m commenting, which in turn will help push your vid to more in the algorithm….
I really hope we get dolphins and whales in Planet Zoo/Aquarium 2, like the way we did in Zoo Tycoon 2. I know it may not be the most ethical but in reality, you have rehabilitation centers where they keep beluga and dolphins in captivity prior to their release back to the sea! I think if they word it right in the game, it can be educational and realistic too, which suits the developer’s conservation mission
Fully agree.. plus at the end of the day it's a game. ZT and PZ are just educational sure. But they're games and they don't have to be 100% accurate to be educational. Heck we have two species of elephants in the game and that's ethically super questionable for many.
@@chrisjungmusic well they also keep monkeys so i guess we can keep humans too then by that logic there is even less diference between a ape and a human than a dolphin and a bear
@@seeing8spotsYeah you can argue that it’s, “just a game”but at least go into research about the game because you’d KNOW how much Frontier is against animal cruelty, they specifically said that wouldn’t add whales, great whites, and narwhals because it’s not possible to do. Also it would basically just go against their whole marketing strategy, because they fund so much for no animal cruelty corporations?
Wow this dolphin house looks verry impressiv!
I never realized how insane the building system is in this game. It’s amazing how your mind is able to see this vision and execute it in the game

I thought they just swim up stream to give birth then make their way back to the sea, I did hear about them. Maybe I need to do more research.
@ maybe you’re confusing them for salmon?
@ maybe, but I’m sure it was dolphins. I’ll do more research 🧐
They would never add them, they just don't belong in a zoo or any form of captivity

As much as you want exotic big marine animals in zoos/aquariums, there’s still no ethical way to put a whale in a zoo/aquarium.

Maybe adding a sea lion exhibit the dolphin lagoon continues ending with a barrier separating it from the sea lion exhibit

Well afaik this would be the biggest dolphin Habitat in the world 😅 the whole back area is as big as the front
Needs a deeper space to dive and more plants. Also would be cool to add fish they could hunt…
It's 6-8m which is already more than most of those habitats have :) but yeah fish to hunt would be cool.
