You're absolutely right...to start reading a book is necessary to have a good basic knowledge of the language (I would say an intermediate level is sufficient). In my opinion the best way to learn a language is watching films, videos, news...or listening to music! I learnt English by myself, of course I started by studying grammar rules (which is essential) and the slowly slowly I watched film in english end reading books or news on BBC channel! Ma the most important thing to learn a new language (especially on your own) is to be passionate and fascinated about it! I wish my English was better but the only way to speak fluent like you do is to move to England and speak English every single day! Btw. . you're amazing :)
I have started with my first book in Italian! I bought Harry Potter for my Kindle and I really enjoy it. I already know the story so that makes it a lot easier, plus I can tap on a word and it will automatically give me the translation into Dutch :)
In my opinion the question of the nor-Latin alphabet (to clarify, the Latin alphabet is the one used in the vast majority of Western countries) is quite simple: I'm doing the liceo classico (classic high school), I am studying Ancient Greek (Attic dialect), which, obviously, use the Greek alphabet; I did not take long to learn it and to be able to reconnect certain sounds to certain letters, and after a while your brain automatically read those letters, and you see them in their entirety, without having to reconnect them to those of your language. Cyrillic (an alphabet mostly used in Russia) derives directly from the Greek alphabet, so - surpassing the real linguistic question - I think it is quite easy to get by with all those languages that use literal writing, with a symbol representing that one sound. The problem is with those languages that use ideograms, like practically all the Oriental languages (excluding the language of Mongolia that has adopted the Latin alphabet). In this case, it will be a problem to read those symbols. A parer mio la questione dell'alfabeto non-Latino (per chiarirci, l'alfabeto Latino è quello usato nella stragrande maggioranza dei paesi Occidentali) è abbastanza semplice: facendo il liceo classico, sto studiando il Greco antico (dialetto Attico), che, ovviamente, usa l'alfabeto Greco; non ci ho messo molto ad impararlo e a saper ricollegare determinati suoni a determinate lettere, e dopo un po' il tuo cervello va in automatico leggendo quelle lettere, e le vedi nella loro interezza, senza il bisogno di doverle ricollegarle a quelle della tua lingua. Tuttavia credo che per cominciare a leggere un libro in tailandese, giapponese, cinese... bisogna comunque approcciarsi prima alla grammatica per conoscere i fonemi linguistici e la corrispondenza con la propria lingua madre. Devi pensare alla lingua come fosse musica. In inglese esistono tanti suoni che in italiano non abbiamo. Ti consiglio di guardare un video (o un film) in inglese con i sottotitoli in inglese e mantenere la concentrazione sul ritmo, l'intonazione, le pause e la pronuncia della lingua. Prova ad imitare l'attore, ripeti ad alta voce la stessa frase, con la stessa enfasi, stesso ritmo, stessa intonazione... copialo in tutto e per tutto, ma dimentica l'italiano. È un esercizio che richiede tempo, sii costante e vedrai che ci riuscirai! ;)
Puoi prendere un podcast in lingua(naturalmente con audio) e leggere simultaneamente frase dopo frase seguendo il ritmo e intonazione dello speaker.La cadenza con cui dici le parole è fondamentale per poi parlare meglio.È un esercizio che viene chiamato "shadowing";se vuoi vai a informati di più che è molto interessante
What advice would you give to those who have never opened a book in their lifetimes even in their native language?. I started reading my first book in English and managed to finish it in 3 months and now I'm halfway through my second one and I have mixed feelings because sometimes I do enjoy reading and let myself get carried away and some other times I just find it incredibly daunting because I'm constantly looking up words and I still get lost at times and still miss out on important details despite having had read at least one book, I don't know why but I just can't help getting these thoughts in my head telling me "you're too stupid for this, just give up" or "how come you don't understand this?" and these thoughts can get very intrusive and makes my reading disruptive. When will I finally be able to read without feeling like an idiot all the time? Or is it the lack of practice that makes me feel like a fool?. I wish I could enjoy reading more without these thoughts getting in the way. Regards!!.

I recently got the audiobook for the first Harry Potter in Italian because I like listening to spoken Italian while I drawing or taking a shower and stuff just to up my exposure and I immediately realized that is the WRONG book because half the words are made up and they’re not even the same made up words in each translation. I think maybe reading it from print may be easier because there are visual clue but oh man.
I started reading in Englisch at the age of like, twelve, didn't like it, and now at 17 I don't even read German (my mother tongue) books anymore, only English ones haha
same like me (italian) but as i'm a computer scientist read everything and interact all in English, sometimes i even forget how to say a particular word in italian LOL

Piccolo consiglio, in Inglese è un grave errore scrivere la "i" quando si riferisce a se stessi (Io), dovresti sempre smettere la "i" in maiuscolo ("I")
