- Proper autumnal week, we’ve had the rain and the sun and the garden centre over-shop. We picked up a whole array of narcissus bulbs and instead of letting them rot in the shed till spring we actually got the in the ground! We also planted out the Minestra and another lot of Cavolo Nero. What else did we do? Went to the football! The same match as last year - Torquay vs Hampton and Richmond Borough.

Fantastic watch every Tuesday. I think you have done amazing building a new tomatoes house and having no kitchen for ages. Lov it when you take us with you on journeys 🎉
:D thanks Pauline!
Hi Jessie and your mum, just love bargain plants! Nice harvest of tomatoes, peppers, courgettes & broccoli. They are lovely and plenty of planting done too. You have footage of a badger, brilliant! great video update. Thanks for sharing and take care 😊
Bargain plants are so satisfying aren't they! Thanks christine!
Caldonian rose potatoes are my favourite! Very yummy 😋🥔
Similarly I closed my eyes an 21:56 d the memory of the scents of cinnamon and ginger bought back wonderful memories of my Polish mother Krystyna
A wonderful cook and mother. Thank you for stirring those memories with your chutney.
My runner beans were rubbish this year too, I did 3 different varieties , but , like you the french beans were prolific 😂.
When normally we can't move for runners :D 2024 really was an interesting one!
You have done amazing job with your TOMS , best I've seen this year give yourself a big pat on the back
Ah, thanks! Its been a tough year on the old tomatoes!
Lovely video ❤
Thanks Rita!
Almost bubble wrap time Jess. Don’t ask me how but I killed my cyclamen this past winter. I need to get my daffs in but it’s pouring rain. I needed to wait til foliage died down and it took ages. Hope the rains aren’t too bad from a soaking wet pouring rain SW Canada, stay safe and dry, Ali ☔️☔️🇨🇦
It is!! Bubble wrap at the ready. Sounds like we're having the same weather :/
Hi Jessie, You're spot on with the spuds in pots. I always grow Charlotte (2nds) and I get larger ones in the ground than in pots. This year I also grew Rooster (main) in pots and were very small like salad spuds. Good harvest you have there. Your brassica netting seems to have done the trick, long may it continue.
Yeah, i've got fantasies of how potatoes should grow in pots but it never seems to work out!
Wow I look at all the things you and others do to protect your gardens and it makes me realise how lucky I am. The worst I have to worry about is the white butterfly caterpillars and my two cats. I use a good insect mesh and it stops both the butterflies and cats ..though the cats think the nets are their personal hammocks lol
Hhahahaha, lily is a nightmare for squashing my netting too :D
I'm still harvesting runner beans they have yielded over 30lbs of beans this year and still producing on 2 arches, it failed miserably last year. Tomatoes are slowly ripening but I may just pick the rest green. Couple of bell and snack peppers ripening to. Cabbages and cauliflower are also really good. No kale even after 5 repeat plantings the slugs had a field day. Love your colourful basket of produce, yummy 😊
Thats frustrating about the kale but sounds like you've had lots of other good things to make up for it!
Hi Jessie, will have to remember the “babooomph, baboomph, method of planting out brassicas! I picked all my drying beans and replanted with lots of lovely winter greens. It’s very satisfying. Beautiful tomatoes. ❤Take care Jessie. Xx
its the only way to plant them!! :D
Great harvest 🌝👍
:D thanks
Love your blogs. Look forward to you & family [mom, lilly, girlies] every week. This year in Michigan USA was the first year I battled bad case of powdery mildew. Used this sprsy I made & it heloed...
mixture developed for powdery mildew-1 tablespoon of baking soda mixed in a gallon of water, with a bit of horticultural oil or liquid soap added to help it cling to the leaves-is also effective for reducing the spread of black spot. After harvest, I pulled all vines & burned them. I'm hoping next year it's gone. Keep up the great content.
Thanks Marcia! Fingers crossed you banished the mildew!
Black strawberry was bottom of this year's taste test here, but I will also grow again and give it another chance because it is so pretty and prolific. Glad your tomatoes are coming good now 🍅❤
Interesting!! Looks like she's getting away with because of her looks, we'll give her one more go :D
Your relationship with your wee Mom just warms the cockles of my heart! That relationship is so precious! ❤ Most of the YT Gardeners that I follow use supplemental fertilization in addition to compost with the exception of Charles Dowding. Is it a culture in the UK or necessary due to your soil type? The Weedy Garden YT had an interesting video about the nutritional difference between "organic" and crops fed with synthetic fertilizers. Cheers!
Dowding can afford outrageous amounts of compost/rotted manure that the rest of us can only dream of!! Especially if you're in a city, like me.
I can't speak for others but i pretty much grow in pure sand where i am, and it can't hold nutrients. They just wash through. In general i tend to stick to applying the well rotted horse manure and seaweed feed to the soil each year (both organic). Although this year i am trying the synthetic fertiliser in the greenhouse that comes with the Quadgrows. And i had some Q4 pellets left over from a job, so i've scattered them about!
Hello Jessica your tomatoes are fantastic. If you can find them there is a potato called cyprus which seems to be a good grower with big oval to round leaves which seem to need very little input. I am from the Republic of Ireland.
Just realised Jessie is short for Jessica🤪😂
Oh i haven't seen Cyprus potatoes to grow for years! they used to be mums favourite. Also, on the name - my actual name is just Jessie, the old fashioned name. You always see it on headstones 1850's and back but not so much now. hahah!
@JessieatPlot37 sorry for calling you Jessica. You are a very good presenter on your plot. Thanks for sharing your videos.
I don't mind Jessica at all! It just always makes me feel like i've done something wrong when someone calls me that :D
Some great harvests there Jessie! Hope your brassicas survive the badgers.
Our cabbages, broccoli and kohlrabi haven't really germinated well. Went to go look for some in B&Q and nothing Geminthegarden, went to Chessington garden centre and no cabbages there either! It's been a strange year for germination this year. I was wondering if i was too early to get starters in a garden centre?
We got blight end of last week! Have about 8kg of green tomatoes that we are now trying to ripen in boxes. Fingers crossed they do.
We found our runner beans have picked up a bit now but not sure if they will endure the cold weather on Thursday. At least we don't have Kirk coming over us now. Take care!
hi hi you are so lucky to live there, now it's Icelandic summer heat in your country ...... Yesterday the mountain road on the main road had to be closed because there was so much snow and ice. love from Iceland
Hello in Iceland! I'm sure you have lots to make up for the cold!!!
I.m so glad it's not just the north then ! I.m So wet through on the alot. Today, picking the last of 5he French beans to bring 5he frame down for 5he winds we're expecting again !😖😀
hahahahhaah, its relentless isn't it!!!
Great to see that you are finally getting a good harvest from your poly tunnel and it looks like weather permitting will have pictures of more to come Jess I have to admire your resilience. With all that you have had to put up with this year both at home and at the allotment, you always manage to keep a smile on your face and present positive Vlog. Great that we could finally see those badger critters on your plot at last, and although it’s probably not kind to you because it means more disruption, I look forward to seeing more. I think the barbecue bed will look fantastic with the daffodils you’ve put in there and a great idea to put those barbecue grids on top. What are you planning to grow in your poly tunnel once they tomatoes and peppers are over??
Ah, thanks Lynne! And yes! I was excited to see the badger on film too. I wish he/she would move on but still, what a creature!
I'm planning to get spinach, mustard green, spring onions and such-like in the poly. Will be doing it in this weeks vlog in fact! :D
Good to see that you can still plant there even in october.
Yeah, still going!
most enjoyable jessie
Thank you Steven!
Hello you can eat the fresh beans, very good
yes. they are lovely!
Fun going to the game and the garden center.
:D
Thanks for the video!
:)thanks Teresa :)
Jess I used baking soda diluted in water as a foliar spray and my cukes stopped showing the fungals.
I caught it early enough to get the plants to recover.
By the way, rodents may chew on the daffodils, but they won't live long. Apparently daffodils are toxic to rodents.
A flower farmer used 3 rows of the daffodils to block voles from getting to the far more valuable flowers.
I attempted the baking soda last year but unlike you, i think i was just too late! I'll keep my eyes peeled next year and try and catch it early.
Oh, thats genius, a little narcissus blockade!
My runners very unusually were crap! The beans tasted blur! And quickly swelled so quickly missed the sweet spot for picking… what a year!!! 😖
So strange for something that usually SO reliable!!
Hello Jessie enjoyed the video and seeing your garden haul. Lost all my Roma tomatoes at the allotment due to blight but we have had good results with the squash and courgettes Harvesting kale, calabrese and chard at the moment so not a total disaster. We have just taken on the next plot to ours so more space for planting next year. Have a good week.
Shame about the Roma! But does sound like a decent year with all the rest of the stuff coming good. Good luck with the expansion!!
Hi mum and Jess great harvest enjoy ❤see you all next week lovely video
Thank you! :D
Beautiful colors 43:50
Lovely time of year!
Lovely to see a bit of a good garden centre!! I have no such luxuries where I moved to live and I’m having withdrawals. 😂 and your plot looks fantastic!
no garden centres?! holy smoke!
@@JessieatPlot37 Right!! There are odds and ends on offer in hardware shops nearby but seeing entire isles of green lush perfect plants ,, what a dream!!
Great use for the saw horse. I use one that is over 100 years 0ld as a perch for chickens.
They just keep going don't they :D
Sorry about the weather Jessie, watching from sunny Cyprus, on my hols 😎
hahahahah, not jealous at al Julie!!
Great harvest
:D
Yummy harvest!!!!
:D
😂BADGER!!!! 😮
I know!! :D :D So excited to actually get one on film :D
I'm gutted I missed the later sowing of potatoes! Oh well I'm shocked I've managed to do anything this year tbf
Hahhahaha, yeah, its not been any easy one!!
Thanks for another great video Jessie. I found that we had a better yield and size from the potatoes in the ground compared to the pots this year. I think I'll do more in the ground next year and perhaps try a few new varieties in the pots. Very interested to hear what you think of the goatbag taste! Such a good name 😂 x
Glad its not just me. definitely in the ground seems to be best. Not tried the Goatbag yet, waiting till we are all in the house together to try it hahahah!
That green dress suits you so well , My Jessie Darling.
They won't eat daffs that are poisonous Jess ,just tulips,
its more just digging them up that i'm worried about!
Hi Jessie I sent a few photographs of your tomatoes to another TH-cam called Kevin and Sarah of living tradition as he's a tomato fanatic, their greenhouse/ poly tunnel will make you jealous as it is about the size of your entire plot!
I can't believe the size of some peoples poly tunnels!!
Yes decision making so true. Yes not good tomato year over here in the NW USA either. Second year of no cuks and no zucchini either🥹
its all very strange isn't it!
@@JessieatPlot37 Yes, yes it is!
I wish I had the crops that you have had. My only true success was my tomatoes. Started very early in the house and cropped quite late in the greenhouse but ahead of yours. I have only had 3 runner beans so far this year and that was from a plant from my third sowing of seed. All previous seedlings had been eaten by slugs or snails. No surviving courgette plants, again 3 attempts at seed sowing. No plants survived the slugs. I even surrounded the final attempt with slug pellets , which I resorted to after years of just handpicking and beer traps, and barriers of thorny rose branches and brambles. No success. Earlier in the year I bought 2 treatments of nematodes for slugs. An expensive but useless experience. My peas early in the season were lovely but later sowings didn't produce anything except food for slugs and snails. And no carrots, swiss chard or kale, late lettuce or mustard has grown enough to harvest. Even though my potatoes gave me a harvest it was about half the usual amount. I think with us it was low light levels that didn't help. I live in the Central belt of Scotland, so I'm used to being envious of your crops down south but this year it's been the worse year ever for me. I have gardened for about 50 years but this year was absolutely rubbish. Will it put me off. No. But I won't be buying many new varieties of seeds. Just using what I have and being my usual optimistic self.
Ah, wow. That sounds like a tough year... nothing we can do but go again in spring, eh? I feel very sorry for people just starting out and this being their first year, it could definitely put you off for life couldn't it! Glad you've kept the optimism. 2024 was the year of the slug, hopefully next year will be the year of the endless gluts!
❤Are you planting garlic this winter? I’m waiting on my delivery to put them in, but having them share beds with potatoes that will go in the ground in March 2025. You inspired me to get my spring bulbs in the ground so I had to pause the video - sorry. 120 daffodils and 54 alliums planted ✅ I also shelled my scarlet runner beans while watching. Thank you or this video! 😊
wow thats going to look incredible!!
Not sure on the garlic, might give it a rest after the white-rot misery of this year.
Can I suggest you paint a plant pot and paint on the variety of potato pop on a stick😊
thats a good idea :D
Hi Jessie, I was wondering if you would be interested in some rebel star seeds which survived outside and blight? I know, its germany but the weather was a bit similar. My husband will go to the UK/London for work, for a week or so and could post it to you from there if wanted??? I just harvested a few big ripe ones, sorry that yours are not there yet. However, I am also collecting things for bringing back to the house because I assume the first frost date for the night is not far. Earlier as usual. Best Saskia
Hello Saskia... how interesting. Your RSP's survived the blight?! Oooh... Was it just one plant or all of them?
@@JessieatPlot37 No, just two of four, so I wonder if this might be a good chance to try another season outside. Got some very beauties of it, not much but they ripened on the wine. I have no greenhouse or polytunnel, so they have to survive as best as they can.
38:53 Was that specifically a summer flowering sprouting broccoli? I had read they are not really productive like the spring flowering ones that you grow over winter so I didn't bother. Or is it the latter and you just sowed seeds at a different time of year?
Glad to see you got the camera set up again. Well done on finally getting some footage. I'm looking forward for a few more clips.
Its a summer one thats very late to produce. They are no where near as prolific as the over wintered ones though, you're right. I missed the sowing for the over-winters si i just chucked these ones in!
We have terrible clubroot too, I’ve ordered some resistant variety seeds for next year to try. I also struggle with spuds in tubs so trying the ground again next season. Love to know where you get your seeds from as wanting to purchase some Alice’s Dream & Green Dr…..I’m assuming somewhere like tomato revolution…?
I've had great success with the clubroot resistant kalettes in the past! And find the Cavolo Nero seems to ignore it! :D
I have to hold my hands up and say i get sent a lot of the exciting tomato varieties from a very generous guy who watches the vlog. But i've had to go looking for them afterwards if i've forgotten to save seed. And then yes, tomato revolution is incredible. I also dabble with SheGrowsVeg and Grown Local!

Jess unrelated to this vid but something that red gardens was saying about enviomesh for keeping out carrot fly from carrots he is drapping it over the rows and was saying that he had quite a bit of damage either from birds or even dogs or foxes, my point is have you noticed any to the cover you use on the carrot box as it is more firmly fixed as I'm thinking of building a carrot box myself and was wondering what to watch out for
I've had no problems with it no... but you have to fix it firmly at the bottom. especially for things like carrot fly because they access from low down!
I see the plot37 code doesn't work on the potatoes 😢Thanks!
🍻 ❤😊
:D
Young male badgers 🐼 are getting thrown out to fend for themselves and to set up their own territory at this time of year Jess, so he maybe just hanging out for a while. Take care xx
Ahhh, that could explain why he's hanging around just that bit further than normal! Hopefully he find a great new territory somewhere not so close! :D
How about early taters in pots... in the poly?
I tried that a few years ago, but that year the spring was so hot they all suffered! Typically if i had done it this year it probably would have been perfect!
Some lovely harvests Jessie.Cucumbers don't like Quadgrows for some reason 🤷Had poor results for three years before I gave up 😊
Ah! thats great to know. I will cross the off my 'to try' list!
Order completed but couldn’t see where to put the code, however not too worried about that
Ah, thats annoying! Which varieties did you go for?

ive not got any potatoes in atm i emptied my bags ther week and although i got nice big ones back just not as many as i would in the ground , when is earliest i can get some potatoes in now ? next year ?
you can try now, for christmas potatoes but they need to be under cover and headed. For just normal growing it will be spring now.
I'm glad you mentioned the shape of the Japanese black. I was thinking they don't look at all like any I have grown - in shape or color. Did you buy seed from a different supplier this year?
Yeah, i did. I think i will go back to Penards!
@@JessieatPlot37 I have had slight differences from different suppliers, but not as dramatic as yours. ALSO, I found seed for "Yellow Japanese Trifele" to try next year.
yellow?! thats is a whole new world! where did you pick them up?
@@JessieatPlot37 I have no history with the place I got them, so they could be selling a yellow pear and usung the name. We'll see.

Hi Jess, may I be a bit nosy and ask what do you feed your girls?
I have 3 girls and they are so fussy and don't like anything I buy them for food.
They always eat a little bit of the mix and leave 60 % behind.
We feed ours Verm-X Original Layer Pellets. Always have done, so not sure mine know if being fussy is an option!! They get additional exciting bits and bobs but that is their main food.
How do you get rid of club root?
You can't. But its less active if you can alter the Ph of the soil hence the Lime.
plot 35 should be plot 37

No, my apologies Sarah. I had just had someone have a go at me about what i was feeding them being cruel, when in fact it was just corn in a pot that came from something else. I was a bit annoyed. I'm sorry!
