My Grandpa was born 2/23/1942, He passed 2/23/2013, This was his favorite song, we played it at his funeral. I was very honored to be one of the pallbearers. I was holding him with my right hand, at the front, all eyes were on me as I was carrying my Grandpa to his final resting place. This song was going through my head the entire time I was carrying my Grandpa. It brought a whole new meaning to "Do the walk of life" It was like I was carrying his memory, his whole life, in that moment I was doing "the walk of life". I was 23 then but on that day I grew up damn fast as I was laying to rest the greatest man I have ever known. Rest in Peace, Larry Gene Stratton.

Sorry for your loss its odd however that he left the world almost 70 years to the day he came into it he left it the day he came into it thats no accident i believe we all have a set time of birth and death predestined unless murder or suicide in which case is not natural but you had a great grandpa by the sound of things especially since he liked this 🎵

@@steveadams9957 Thanks for those kind words. I see it as him somehow finding a way to still build his character even at his passing. If you knew him you’d understand if he was suppose to go anyway he could “show out” he would lol. He was so wise and I can’t believe people actually liked my comment. I really appreciate those all who liked. I hope everyone has the chance to experience someone like my grandpa it really builds a person up.

Neat story. What a great memory for you. Nothing can replace our lived ones. I lost my mom that I lived with for 51 years, taking care of her after my dad died in 1983. She was retrieving the trash can from the road and a wind gust knocked her over with the trash can. She fell backwards, hitting her head on the concrete. She was unconscious and fought for her life for 6 and 1/2 before she succumbed on June 4 2011.

Sometime around 25 years ago, I was in Minonk, Illinois on the 4th of July. I was sitting next to my grandpa in the beer tent when the band started playing this fantastic tune. This Grandpa of mine loved to dance but was getting to the point where his knees didn't love the dance as much as his spirit did. He turned to me and said, "Boy! This is a great song to dance to when you can dance to it." He's been gone about 13 years now. I always dance one for Grandpa when this number comes on. Thank you Dire Straits!

@Joe Sawyer No. Unfortunately not. They separated within September-October of 1999 when I was still 11, (20 years ago, now) and divorced in August, 2000 - right before I began junior high when I was still 12. Dad messed around on my mom behind her back and took me around her after picking me up from school - he lied to me about her being his friend. I even thought my mom would be happy when I told her I was going to have more siblings(my dad was going to marry his whore and her children were going to be my step-siblings). I even thought I was in bad trouble while I was laying in bed that night I told her, until I listened to my parents argue one last time before my mom broke down in tears and my dad told her something in one word - I don't know what it was...then, I heard him leave the house and take off in his car, that night. I wouldn't see him again until June, 2000. That whore and my dad's marriage lasted from March, 2001 - December, 2003/January, 2004, when SHE cheated on my dad while he was serving our country overseas in Iraq. She also beat him and demeaned him, as well.
I really am sorry for going into detail about this, especially on a video of a song that has an energetic and dance-like feel to it... you're not to blame for asking me if my parents are happy and still together(there was a time I wished they were, but it's been too far gone since then and my mom's done with raising children, which my dad has more of - since 2008, when he was 45).

Mid 80's... the greatest era in American history in my opinion. Great music, GREAT President, and my favorite player ever, Larry Bird won the MVP in 84,85 and 86, should've won it in 87 too and the 86 Boston Celtics were and still are the greatest team of all time. If I had a time machine, I'd definitely go back to the mid 80's!

I've been listening to music for half an hour when Hurt by Johnny Cash came up. It got me thinking just how much that song describes me, but then I was like "Well if I'm gonna have my personal hymn, no way it's gonna be that depressing". This one instantly came to my mind so here I am.
What I'm trying to say is we can all define ourselves by our worst or by our best - it's the choice. Keep up the good spirits everyone!

It’s interesting to see everyone’s different take on their thoughts on this song. In my own experiences it reminds me of my time in the north east of England, which is of course where Mark and David Knopfler are from, both being Geordies. I think though one thing we all agree on is this song is just a great vibe and makes you feel good along the walk of life.

Here comes Johnny singing oldies, goldies
    Be-Bop-A-Lula, Baby What I Say
Here comes Johnny singing I Gotta Woman
Down in the tunnels trying to make it pay
He got the action, he got the motion
    Yeah the boy can play
    Dedication devotion
Turning all the night time into the day
He do the song about the sweet loving woman
He do the song about the knife
He do the walk, he do the walk of life
Here comes Johnny and he'll tell you the story
Hand me down my walking shoes
Here comes Johnny with the power and glory
    Backbeat the talkin' blues
He got the action, he got the motion
    Yeah the boy can play
    Dedication devotion
Turning all the night time into the day
He do the song about the sweet loving woman
He do the song about the knife
He do the walk, he do the walk of life
Here comes Johnny singing oldies, goldies
    Be-Bop-A-Lula Baby What I Say
Here comes Johnny singing I Gotta Woman
Down in the tunnels, trying to make it pay
He got the action, he got the motion
    Yeah the boy can play
    Dedication devotion
Turning the night time into day
And after all the violence and double talk
There's just a song in all the trouble and the strife
You do the walk, you do the walk of life

This song was around when i was a senior, or about to be. I liked it, but for Dire Straights it was just a 'pop' song. But my brother in law, one day we were standing around the house, and this song was on the radio. My brother in law looked at me and asked "Can you DO 'The Walk Of Life?'" I didnt know what he was on about! Then he started 'strutting' across the floor, bouncing to the beat in a positive, confident way. He said "THATS 'The walk Of Life!'" He actually thought the song-wasnt a metaphor for "the walk of life,' but an actual style of WALKING! In his out of touch, innocent way, changed the meaning for me too, because his version was much more fun! Thanks Cliff Howell, i hope all is great in your world!

I have the weirdest image association with this song. I was about 12-14, and I was reading the Complete Sherlock Holmes. The edition I was reading had the original Sidney Paget illustrations. At the same time I was reading this in my bedroom, my high school age older brother was listening to the top charts in his bedroom, and this song was topping the charts in the weeks I was reading Sherlock Holmes. It felt regular as clockwork, while I was reading Holmes and looking at the illustrations, this catchy tune with the words I couldn't make out was playing in the background. Ever since then, whenever I hear this song, I imagine a Sherlock Holmes music video.
You gotta admit, it makes more sense than a video of American sports bloopers.
