    Additional tip: If you've got a shit ton of VST plugins, you can make an Ableton preset and save them in a folder where you put them in different categories like EQ/Compressor/Saturation etc.
    It takes a bit of time but helps immensely when trying to find the right plugin for your task.
    I prefer it this way, because it frees up the collection folders, so I can put different stuff there like my favorite samples, max devices etc.

    Thank you for all the tips LNA! I did not realize that the headphone logo on the master channel was used for sample preview volume. I was using it before to set the metronome volume level. That saves me the frustration of messing around with my monitor's level while listening to samples.😅

    3:40 I watched this a year ago and I remember this was a god send. I could never figure out before why the samples always seemed to be playing at random volumes not know I was adjusting it with that knob. Thank you LNA!

    Another great, simple trick: copying & pasting emojis works in the titles within the Browser. Colored emojis like a red pushpin, red heart, or yellow star are great for accenting stuff you need to quickly pick out in the list!

  • @useurhed

    I really appreciate your videos. I hoped you would cover file management for VSTi' in this one, since Ableton's unique weakness is that it only allows 1 path for VST2 (it can be user-defined) and 1 "system" plus 1 "custom" path for VST3 instruments. And if you don't move your VSTs into those folders and keep them specific and lean, rescanning will take forever and/or Ableton Live is prone to some very spectacular crashes. The problem is perpetuated by virtual instrument makers whose install routines often place the VST dlls wherever they want, without asking user during install. I see a few people saying the answer is just to make a custom folder for VST2 and one for VST3 and put shortcuts in them for VSTs that are installed all over your hard drive. More recently, people are saying that doesn't work anymore. And Ableton says it doesn't support VST2 anymore - so are we all supposed to quit using them? Do you just not use VST instruments? How do you do it? Thanks!

I format the PC, I reinstall Ableton Live with all plug-ins (same previous version) but, ONLY vst\instruments like; Serum, Kontakt, Diva, Omnisphere etc etc don't load the preset I used in the project. In addition to the "Collect all and save" function, how can I reload the instrument with the right preset? It would be great if you could help me with this. Thank you!!!! By the way... Subscribed

    Very good video! Valuable tips. I only miss one thing. It drives me crazy that plugins are organized in folders with subfolders. So when I spend my hard-earned ;-) money on plugin Happy! I may find it burried in a subfolder in the folder Darkpluginmanufacturers in my plugins folder. Not rarely to forget about this plugin forever. In the VST3's it's worse than in the older VST(2)s. Recently I came to believe this is part of the design of VST3. So I don't know who is responsible for this, but I'd like just to see a list of my plugins, that at the most I might want to organize in folders like +pianos, +effects etc. However, the burrying then only gets deeper. Some folder names are not that problematic (like Arturia, MeldaProductions (please make it Melba)), but for manufacturers that I have only one plugin of, and that are not so well-known, I end up forgetting. Since I upgraded Ableton I even use Ableton less due to this disappearing of my plugins. And I don't like having to open two consecutive folders to dig up my Happy! I want to see a list of my plugins on my screen (or in my folder pianos, effects), where I can pick one, a list of plugins, not a list of manufacturers. Compare it with the spices in your kitchen. You want them in sight, to be able to cook creatively. Not get them one by one from a closed box, in a cupboard behind a closed door. Do you have a smart solution?

      Hey Frits, I recently stumbled upon a video that might be the solution that you’re looking for! I have roughly 5 external plug-ins thus far so I merely bookmarked it and checked the first few minutes. Though title is rather clear: »How To Organize VST2 and VST3 Plugins in Ableton Live« (I don’t include the link to lower the risk of getting marked as spam). Hope it helps!

    • @fritsvanzanten3573
      @fritsvanzanten3573 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@clapostrophy I use this for plugins that by their installer are automatically put in other folders than my default (which some installer change in your registry) or specified one. I then use a shortcut for that folder. I hadn't considered doing that for the dlls themselves. It would be rather a lot, several dozens at least. But thanks for the tip!

    Hi! LNA! I was looking for this. I have a related question. I always find a way to complicate easy stuff. Let's say I just downloaded a sample pack from space, it has 10 billion samples and I want to put it on my external drive so it doesn't bust my iMac but I want to access the the pack in Ableton so I can preview sounds for the rest of my life. What's the trick?
    Also, so I can consolidate my questions, I have made a mess of my places and user library as it is. I have read as long as I "collect and save my projects" I can organize the junk and even delete stuff. Is there any truth to this rumor or will I just send Ableton on a wild goose chase looking for samples every time I open up an old project?

  • @JimmyLem
    @JimmyLem ปีที่แล้ว

    It’s important for people to understand that an external hard drive is NOT a backup unless it duplicates data elsewhere.
    Data on computer + data on external = backed up
    No data on computer + data on external = not backed up
    There are further iterations of this - offsite/DR backups and cloud as”external” but the general rule above always applies. If the external drive dies - as they often do - and there is no duplication, it’s gone.

  • @borisdonkson6898

    If you store all your samples to an external harddrive, when you load ableton it will go off as part of its start up and scan for all this info in different locations. This can be a pain in the arse if you are using an older machine. I have a couple of hundred GB of samples which ableton now wants to index via usb2... Takes about 2hrs.

    Guys, don't ever buy midi clips, what is even the point of that? Watch tutorials and try ro recreate the midi notes.
    But mostly, try to understand the why those notes and why those places, so you can come up with your own.
    At the end of the day trial and error will be the best teacher. Taking shortcuts won't help you in the long run.
    Also, ableton already has build in tools to help you create midi clips that sound good, like chord and arpegiator.
