  • Stern Pinball still hand-makes and sells thousands of pinball machines every year even though it was nearly game over for the industry after video games took over in the ‘90s. While on the outside the machines are still perfectly nostalgic, it’s a completely different ball game under the hood. In 2006, there were around 500 pinball players registered with the International Flipper Pinball Association worldwide. By 2017, that number jumped to 55,000.

Stern survived by producing exclusively IP license-themed games, reducing production and outsourcing factory staff. At one point, Gary Stern was the only full-time employee. It had little to do with competition and everything to do with the market segment.

Don't stop saving money and you will get one. It is all matter of decision. Many people spend a lot money on cars etc but your choice don't have to follow others. I got Dialed In pinball limited edition last year for $9,500! Yes VERY expensive but absolutely worth it. One good physical pinball machine easily beats hundreds of electronic pinball sim games.

My dad had Poseidon King of the sea pinball machine when I was growing up. I love video games, but nothing will ever beat pinball. Pinball is the best and every single machine is different. Every machine tilts differently and you can manipulate it to your advantage, sometimes.

Learn to control the ball, with dead flips, cradling and nudging. It's all practice.
The bit about knowing what to shoot is definitely true though as the rulesets get deeper and deeper. This is good for longevity of a game but does effect the approachability.
If in doubt, ramp it out. And if it's lit, hit are a general rule of thumb. I do sometimes get surprised that where did that multiball come from etc doing that but 😂

I could never afford a real pinball machine. But I do have an oculus quest 2 and every pinball table on "PinballFX2VR" and star wars pinball. It's pretty awesome and feels extremely realistic. I just wish they would add more of the virtual tables that they have already made on Xbox and tablets. Would love to play my favorites in VR. But I understand that even though the digital tables, for example "sorcerers lair", already exists in a 2D state, it takes a lot of work to put it into VR especially considering the experience they add to the VR versions.

Someone didn't do their fact checking. Pinball had its heyday in the 1970s until video games replaced them in the 1980s. That's actually kind of a major detail and makes me wonder about a lot of the other information presented on this channel.

There were tons of good pinball-machines made in the 90s. You do your research.

I never said anything about the 1990s. Try reading the comments before replying to them. Shocking concept to you, I know.

By the way, I was actually alive back then and remember all the video games in the arcades with the two forgotten pinball machines off in the corner and don't need to rely on some second hand report for my information. A good journalist would have interviewed people who were alive in that era before leading the video with an incorrect piece of trivia.
